Past the Pit Gate.......
by Danny Rosencrans
August 17, 2009

Rain was the big winner on Sunday night at Quincy Raceways. Although there was not a lot of rain during the day on Sunday, rain on Saturday night and the threat of more was enough to make officials pull the plug on the show. It turned out to be a good call, as more precipitation rolled in on Sunday night. The postponed trophy dash finales will now be held on the final night of racing, Sunday September 13. I don't know what would happen to the 20 lap events if the final night falls to weather! This coming Sunday, August 23 is an absolute must see for late model fans. The regular four class program will see increased purses in each class, and will be headlined by the first visit of the fledgling UMP Monster Midwest Series. The traveling late model show is similar to the Deery Brothers Summer Series, only this one is for the UMP rules (open style) cars. Through several dates in 2009 around central Illinois, the series is drawing in the 28-30 car range, and pays $ 2,000.00 to win, again similar to the Deery Series for IMCA late models. Going into this weekend, Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Il. and Eric Smith of Shirley, Il. are tied atop the series point standings, with Jason Feger, the "Highside Hustler", defending UMP Summernationals champion Dennis Erb Jr. and Frank Heckenast Jr. in hot pursuit. All but Smith were on hand at the QR Summer nationals show in July, and all finished in the top 11 spots, led by Erb in fourth. This should be a great show, and it will be fun to see what decision some of our weekly competitors make with regards to running IMCA or switching to the higher paying UMP race for the night. Meanwhile, Jason Frankel will be on the road this week, as the Deery Series heads for the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Tuesday followed by a Wednesday stop in Marshalltown, Iowa. Frankel is second in series points to five time champion Jeff Aikey with seven races remaining, including a September 6 event in Quincy. Only two points nights remain here in Quincy, with all four titles up for grabs still.
See you at the races!
