Davenport champions dominate All-Star Classic
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 11, 2011)  –  The All-Star Classic at the Davenport Speedway had plenty of excitement and high-speed action, despite being delayed for two days due to rain. Four classes of racing took to the historic Davenport half-mile oval Sunday, highlighted by the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models. When the final flag had flown, three of the speedway’s season champions had shown their muscle on the half-mile.

Deery Series point leader and Davenport IMCA Late Model track champion, Ray Guss Jr., captured his second Deery victory of the year in the 40-lap main event. Guss grabbed the point on lap sixteen, when leaders Colby Springsteen and Denny Eckrich got together coming out of turn four. Guss would lead the remaining laps and have a full straightaway lead at the finish.

Eckrich continued on in second after the contact and would finish in that position. Springsteen, who led the first fifteen laps, would fall back in the field and then be sent to the rear on the next caution period for making contact with Eckrich under yellow.

Nate Bueseling started on the outside of the front row and stayed in the top five the entire race before finishing third.  Mike Klinkhammer also hung around the top five all race long, coming home in fourth. Andy Eckrich rounded out the top five.

Late model heat wins went to Andy Eckrich, Terry Neal, and Brian Harris.

“The Dominator”, Bob Dominacki lived up to his nickname Sunday night. Dominacki, the IMCA Modified track champion at Davenport this season led all twenty laps of the caution-filled Modified feature. Doug Nigh, driving the #45, started seventh and worked his way up to a second place finish. Brandon Rothzen started eleventh and managed his way to third. Rich Smith was fourth, with Greg Durbin fifth.

Jeremy Marquette capped off his championship season with the feature win in the Street Stocks. After starting seventh on the grid, Marquette took the lead from Donnie Louck on lap six. Jeremy would cruise to the checkers for the win.

Cary Brown also passed Louck for second and closed in on the leader but would finish in the runner-up position. Louck finished third, ahead of Phil Anderson and Chuck Fox.

Aaron Hitt put the hurt on the 4 Stock field in their 12-lap main. Ryan Walker got out to the early race lead before yielding to Ricky Kay. Kay built up a big lead before his car slowed on lap nine. Mike Goben held the lead briefly, with Hitt leading the last couple laps and taking the checkered flag. Goben would finish second. Walker, Mike Morrow, and Jason Blocker rounded out the top five.

The management and staff of DRT TRAK Racing would like to thank everyone who attended or participated at the Davenport Speedway in 2011, and hope to see all of you back next season.
