Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods new at Arlington this season

ARLINGTON, Minn. (January 21, 2011) – IMCA’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods have found another new Minnesota home, joining Saturday cards this season at Arlington Raceway.

A registration and test and tune night is scheduled for April 16 with opening night on April 23. Point races continue through Sept. 24.

Other IMCA divisions running at Arlington are the Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Northern SportMods are replacing the WISSOTA-sanctioned Midwest Modifieds.

“We’ve been one of the tracks that’s run an economy modified class for many years (since 1998). It just got to the point with the changes in the rules WISSOTA made that it would be better to go with IMCA,” promoter Bob Allen said. “We have had a growing number of drivers ask about Northern SportMods because they like the crate engine and manual transmission options. This was the best time for us to make the change.”

Arlington becomes the fifth Minnesota track with Northern SportMods on weekly race programs and the third to do so starting this season. The class will also be new at Murray County Speedway and Redwood Speedway.

A one year phase-in period will allow Midwest Modified drivers to race with the Northern SportMods at Arlington.

“As we’ve done with other divisions at other race tracks in similar situations, cars that competed at Arlington in 2010 will be allowed to compete there in 2011,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. “That transition helps reduce drivers’ costs due to differences in the rules.”
