Darbyshire Takes $3000 Win at Quincy Raceways Titan Wheel &
Tire IMCA Late Model Shootout
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (July 1) - Twenty Eight of the best IMCA Late Models showed up at
Quincy Raceways to do battle in the $3000 to Win Titan Wheel & Tire Late Model
Shootout on Sunday, July 1 and they did not disappoint the large crowd during
the fifty lap main event. Justin Reed took the early lead at the drop of the
green flag with Tom Darbyshire and Terry Gallaher in tow. The trio battled tooth
and nail during the opening laps with Mark Burgtorf joining the fray on the
eleventh lap. Burgtorf worked his way into second on lap eighteen but contact
between Reed and Burgtorf brought the caution flag out with Burgtorf being
relegated to the tail of the field. Reed then kept the lead on the reappearance
of the green flag and proceeded to pace the field for two laps when Darbyshire
made his move taking over the lead on lap nineteen. Darbyshire then held off the
challenges of Reed and later in the event, Terry Gallaher to take home the $3000
winners check. Gallaher settled for second followed by Jeff Aikey in third, Reed
in fourth and Matt Strassheim in fifth. Boone McLaughlin, Lonnie Bailey, Denny
Woodworth and Ron Elbe took the heat race wins with Keith Pratt bringing home
the checkered flag in the B-Main. Mark Burgtorf claimed the win in the Summy
Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.
Michael Long continued his dominance in the Miller Lite Modified division and
picked up his sixth points paying feature event win in ten tries. Long drew the
outside pole position for the twenty five lap main event and made good use of it
as he held the top spot until the checkered flag fell. Long was unchallenged
until the final few laps when Henry DeLonjay made a charge to get within a
couple of car lengths at the checkered flag. DeLonjay settled for second
followed by Tony Dunker in third, Mark Burgtorf in fourth and Brandon Lennox in
fifth. DeLonjay, Burgtorf and Jeff Waterman were the heat race winners while
Long took home the hardware in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash.
Steve Carlin looked like he would take another feature event win in the Hobby
Stock division as he jumped into the early lead of the twenty lapper and held
court until Aaron Brocksieck started gaining ground. Brocksieck pulled even with
Carlin on the seventeenth lap. Carlin tried in vain to hold off Brocksieck but
the young fireball proved that he was up to the task over the final circuits to
take the feature event win by a little more than a tenth of a second at the
checkered flag. Carlin settled for second followed by Todd Reichert, Michael Lay
and James Leffew. Carlin and Louis Goodwin were the heat race winners.
Levi Long took his fourth feature event win in the Hornet division over Steven
DeLonjay in second, Jordan DeLonjay Rice in third, Joe Gollaher in fourth and
Bill Winkle in fifth. Zack Bruenger and DeLonjay Rice were the heat race
winners.
