(Bill W) May 13, 2013 – The Midwest Open Wheel Association hits the Midwest for a pair of big shows this weekend! First up is the Mary Lee Standridge Memorial this Friday night at the Jacksonville Raceway in Jacksonville, Illinois. The stars of MOWA will bid for that prestigious win, and then head to a new venue. On Saturday, they hit the high banks of Montgomery Motorsports Park in New Florence, Missouri for the Spring Sprint Nationals.

Brian Brown won last year’s Mary Lee Standridge Memorial event. It’s anyone’s guess who will conquer the banked ¼-mile this time around. The series has seen seven different winners in eight trips to Jacksonville the past three years. Only Jimmy Hurley has been a repeat winner in Jacksonville. Joining Brown as other winners there are Terry McCarl, Jerrod Hull, Danny Smith, AJ Bruns and Joey Moughan.

In addition to FREE admission for kids under 12, there will be $500 in quarters up for grabs as part of the “Kid’s Dash for Cash” at Jacksonville!

Action should be awesome on the high-banked 3/8-mile oval in New Florence, Missouri on Saturday as well. An open wheel doubleheader also features All Star Midgets! MOWA will be visiting Montgomery Motorsports Park three times in 2013!

After two events, AJ Bruns leads the current MOWA point standings. Young Paul Nienhiser is second in points, Hurley and Hull are tied for third in points, and Ben Wagoner rounds out the top five. Ian Madsen and Jac Haudenschild have won features at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa and the Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Illinois, respectively.

Pits open at 3 p.m. on Friday in Jacksonville with grandstands opening at 5 p.m. Racing is slated for 7 p.m. Admission is $20, with children 12 and under FREE! For more information, visit www.JacksonvilleSpeedway.com!

Gates open at 5 p.m. on Saturday in New Florence, with hot laps scheduled for 7 p.m. Adult admission is $20, with kids 8 and under FREE. For more information, visit www.montgomerymotorsportsparkmo.com/!

(Bill W) April 21, 2013 – “The Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild swept his heat the Dash and the Feature event, all from the pole, at the Vermilion County Speedway on Sunday night. His first career MOWA victory aboard the Leidig #59 was part of the Midwest Open Wheel Shootout.

The 25-lap main event was slow to get rhythm, as Haudenschild took the early lead ahead of Shane Stewart. With two laps in the books, Miranda Throckmorton came to a stop, bringing out the caution flag. Two laps later, Paul Nienhiser spun. An incident involving Jason Leffler and Chris Urish slowed things with six laps in the books.

With 19 laps to go, Haudenschild led the field back to green, ahead of Stewart, AJ Bruns, Sheldon Haudenschild and Lucas Wolfe. The younger Haudenschild overtook Bruns for third on lap 12, and reeled in Stewart in traffic in an attempt to catch his father, who led.

Jac did well in traffic and put a lapped car between himself and the trailing pair by lap 19, when fourth running Lucas Wolfe spun to a stop on lap 19. The final restart saw Jac leading Stewart, Sheldon, Bruns and Kody Kinser back to green.

Sheldon saved a spin out on the restart, but got off the track, losing several spots. Jac led the final six circuits to the win with Stewart and Bruns in tow. Hard-charger, Randy Hannagan and Kinser rounded out the top five.

Sixth through tenth were Nienhiser, back from the tail after his spin, Danny Smith, Sheldon Haudenschild, Wolfe and Jimmy Hurley. Jerrod Hull, Wolfe, Stewart and Haudenschild won heats, while Leffler and Jimmy Light won the B mains.

The next MOWA event will be Saturday, May 4 at the Spoon River Speedway south of Canton, Illinois.

(Bill W) April 16, 2013 – After a scintillating start to the season last weekend and 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, the Midwest Open Wheel Association will head to the Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Illinois this Sunday night, April 21. This will mark the second appearance of the MOWA series in Danville. It will be half of the “Midwest Open Wheel Showdown”, which also features 410 non-wing sprints!

Two-time and defending series’ champion, Jerrod Hull, was the winner at the facility last July, and is intent on repeating that feat Sunday. Hull’s win last year came over Korey Weyant, Critter Malone, Jimmy Hurley and Ben Wagoner.

Last Saturday’s event saw the first Aussie winner in MOWA series history. Ian Madsen produced a clean sweep of the night’s events, but it wasn’t easy. Terry McCarl, starting at the tail of the field charged to a second place finish after threatening late for the lead. Lucas Wolfe was third, and also came from the tail after repairing a flat tire. AJ Bruns was fourth, ahead of Wagoner.

This will mark the first of two MOWA trips to Danville. They will return on Saturday, August 4.

(Bill W) April 13, 2013 – Ian Madsen was planning on wrapping up a championship at the Sydney Speedway in Australia on Saturday night. Unforeseen travel issues arose for the St. Mary’s, New South Wales native, and he ended up at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa racing at the Midwest Open Wheel Association opener. He made the most of it by sweeping the night’s events, holding off Terry McCarl, who charged from the tail of the field in an electric feature event. The win was worth $3,000 and came on the first night of competition with his brand new team (Brent Nehring #18).

After a heat win, and by virtue of a win in the Dash, Madsen started on the pole and shot out to a big lead early on in the 30-lapper with Lucas Wolfe in tow. A spin by Mike Moore with two laps in the books slowed things. Third running and two-time and defending MOWA champion, Jerrod Hull, suffered a flat left rear under caution, and restarted at the tail. McCarl had done the same at the race’s outset, with mag box problems the culprit.

Madsen pulled away again under green flag conditions as second place, Wolfe, had his hands full with AJ Bruns. With eleven laps in, it was Wolfe’s turn to lose a left rear. It was his second of the night, as he blew one in his heat race. He would restart at the tail as well.

Eyes were on McCarl, who had moved up to seventh from the tail on a track that was lending multiple grooves. McCarl began picking off cars, and had shot by Jimmy Hurley into third by lap 21. Two laps later, he was pressuring Madsen for the lead, when Aussie, Trevor Reynolds spun.

Madsen led McCarl, Bruns, Hurley and Jimmy Light back to green with seven laps to go. While eyes were on McCarl, who could not catch Madsen, Wolfe, who restarted seventh, was blazing a trail of his own. Incredibly, he would finish third behind the lead pair. Bruns was fourth, ahead of Ben Wagoner, and Hull, who did his own recovery effort from the tail. Hurley, Paul Nienhiser (from 22nd), Light and Robbie Standridge completed the top ten.

“It was pretty hectic in lapped traffic,” said Madsen in Victory Lane. “I knew (McCarl) would be coming. He’s an excellent racer. I knew he and Lucas would be coming from the back. I’m just looking forward to racing with him week in and week out at Knoxville. It was an awesome race. I hope we can beat him a couple more times this year.”

“It’s unfortunate that yellow came out,” said McCarl of the late caution that interrupted his chase of Madsen in the Country Builders Construction #24. “We put a little harder tire on than most guys did. The tires sealed up, and Ian took off on us. We certainly came to win, that pays the best. But I’m a promoter at heart, and that was a show. Hopefully, all the fans who braved the cold weather saw a good show.”

“I’m not sure what happened to it,” said Wolfe of his left rear tire on the Buffalo Wild Wings #82. “It must have had a hole in it. The track ended up being pretty racy and gave us two options.”

The next stop for the MOWA series will be Sunday, April 21 at the Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Illinois.
(Bill W) April 8, 2013 – It’s time to get things roaring back into action with some 410 sprint car action in Illinois and Iowa this weekend! The Midwest Open Wheel Association kicks off their third season in 2013 with an event on Friday at the Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois, and on Saturday at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa!

The MOWA regulars will have plenty of company this weekend to open the season. Two-time and defending champion, Jerrod Hull, of Sikeston, Missouri leads the regular competitors expected. Jimmy Hurley (2 MOWA wins at Jacksonville), former track champion, AJ Bruns (1 win at Jacksonville) and Joey Moughan (1 win at Jacksonville) are expected to contend this weekend as well.

They are expected to be joined by the likes of Jim Moughan Jr., Ben Wagoner, Robbie Standridge, Chris Urish, Jeremy Standridge, Logan Faucon and young Paul Nienhiser, who already recorded a win this season with the Sprint Invaders at 34 Raceway.

Former World of Outlaws pilot Lucas Wolfe of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and the Buffalo Wild Wings #82 team have expressed interest in this weekend’s events, as has Indianola Iowa’s Dustin Selvage. Western Pennsylvania’s Jimmy Light and Australia’s Trevor Reynolds are just a couple of other drivers expected to challenge the drivers of MOWA.

Last season, Hurley became the only driver to win more than one feature event at Jacksonville in eight MOWA events. Other winners over the past three seasons have been Terry McCarl, Hull, Danny Smith, Bruns, Brian Brown and Joey Moughan.

Danny Lasoski has two wins in MOWA competition at 34 Raceway. Smith and McCarl have the others on the banked 3/8-mile oval.

Pits open at 3 p.m. on Friday in Jacksonville with grandstands opening at 5 p.m. Racing is slated for 7 p.m. Admission is $20, with children 12 and under FREE! For more information, visit www.JacksonvilleSpeedway.com!

The pits open at 4 p.m. on Saturday at 34 Raceway, with grandstands opening at 5 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Adult admission is $20, with Seniors priced at $18, students at $15 and children 10 and under are FREE! For more information, visit www.34Raceway.com!

It All Comes Down to This for MOWA…Championship Night at Tri-City!

(Bill W) October 7, 2012 – It’s hard to believe but the end is near on the 2012 campaign for the Midwest Open Wheel Association sprint car series! This Friday night proves to be a great night of racing at the Tri-City Speedway near Granite City, Illinois. Plenty of heavy hitters are expected to take on the MOWA regulars on the racy 3/8-mile oval!

Jerrod Hull has all but locked up his second consecutive championship with the series. The Sikeston, Missouri native leads in season wins with four. Plenty of spots are up for grabs behind him, however. AJ Bruns, Korey Weyant, Ben Wagoner and Jim Moughan round out the top five in season points. Jimmy Hurley, Jordan Goldesberry, Chris Urish, Robbie Standridge and Logan Faucon complete the top ten in the standings.

Two-time Knoxville Raceway track champion Brian Brown is expected to challenge the usual contingent. Brown has two career wins with the MOWA including this season’s Mary Lee Standridge Memorial. Bill Balog will also be in the house! The “Alaskan Cheesehead” is a five-time IRA champion, and has won the last two Bill Waite Jr. Memorials at the LaSalle (IL) Speedway. Danny Smith, who has won the only other MOWA visit to Tri-City Speedway, and has captured three series wins this year will also be on hand!

Smith also won the last MOWA event Saturday, September 22 at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. It was his fifth career triumph with the series. Joey Moughan captured the “Shaheen’s Blast from the Past” event at Jacksonville (IL) Speedway on Friday, September 21 to record his long awaited first series victory.

Don’t miss the last big 410 sprint car blowout in Illinois this season! Join us at the Tri-City Speedway this Friday night!

Tri-City Speedway has a lot going on Friday night! This will also be the season championship for their PCRA Pro Crate Late Model Series with $1,000 to win and they will have their “Takin’ it to the Streets” Street Stock event with $3,000 going to the winner. For more information, visit www.TriCitySpeedway.net!

Jerrod Hull Holds Off Don Droud to Repeat at Tom Knowles Memorial!

(Bill W) September 15, 2012 – Jerrod Hull won a high speed game of chicken coming for the checkered flag to edge Don Droud Jr. by four hundredths of a second to win Saturday’s 28th Annual Tom Knowles Memorial at the Spoon River Speedway near Canton, Illinois. It was the second year in a row that the defending MOWA champion and current point leader has won the event.

Hull led at the outset from the pole position he earned by winning the Dash from row three. Geoff Dodge settled into second ahead of Droud. By the halfway mark, the leaders were in heavy traffic and Dodge closed on Hull.

On lap 16, the lapped machine of Bret Tripplett slowed and Hull made heavy contact with him causing nose wing damage. Dodge made contact as well, as Droud avoided the incident. All would continue on a restart that saw Hull ahead of Dodge, Droud, AJ Bruns and Ben Wagoner.

Rookie Paul Nienhiser flipped hard over the heavy cushion in turn three when the green flew. He was uninjured. Droud used a good restart to slip under Dodge at that point and begin his chase of the leader.

On the white flag lap, it appeared the be all Hull, but Droud stormed through three and four and drew beside the leader on the frontstretch. Hull was able to win by just four hundredths of a second.

“We were good in one and two, but in three and four, we were struggling,” said Hull in Victory Lane. “I didn’t know if I should run the top or the middle. I knew someone was coming. I think he was able to find something on the bottom. When you are second, you can search around a bit. I crowded him a little bit…we banged, but that was for the win. You gotta do what you gotta do! I thank Manny (Rockhold) and the track crew for a great track to run on.”

“Bernie (Stuebgen) at Indy Race Parts gave me a great car tonight,” said second place Droud. “I didn’t mean to get into Jerrod, but I got a good run off of four. I just wished I would have tried a little earlier.”

Dodge settled for third in his first visit to Spoon River. “It was good night. We’ve been struggling a little lately. We were able to bring it home third. I think we missed the racetrack a little bit, but Don Droud and Jerrod Hull are good racers. To run third to them is not bad, and we’ll come back to try it again.”

Jordan Goldesberry charged to fourth from row seven, and Robbie Standridge was fifth. Korey Weyant, Scott Young, AJ Bruns, hard-charger Jimmy Light and Jeremy Standridge rounded out the top ten.

Dodge, Critter Malone, Jeremy Standridge and Wagoner won heat races. Nienhiser and Chris Urish captured the B mains.

A big weekend is in store for the MOWA Friday and Saturday. On Friday, they will race for $4,000 to win at “Shaheen’s Blast from the Past” at the Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois. On Saturday, they travel to the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. For more information, visit www.MidwestOpenWheel.com!

(Bill W) September 10, 2012 – For some, the high banks of the Spoon River Speedway are the ultimate in speed and competition in central Illinois. The Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) will test the racy oval this Saturday night as part of the 28th Annual Tom Knowles Memorial. Who will add their name to the prestigious list of winners at the Spoon?

Two events were held at Spoon River Speedway, located south of Canton, Illinois in 2011. Brian Brown won an event there in July, before Jerrod Hull notched a win in the Tom Knowles Memorial in September. Hull, the MOWA defending champion, leads the series’ standings heading in.

AJ Bruns is second in the standings, ahead of Jim Moughan Jr. and Korey Weyant, who are tied for third. Ben Wagoner, Chris Urish, Jimmy Hurley, Jordan Goldesberry, Robbie Standridge and Logan Faucon round out the top ten in the competitive series.

MOWA drivers are champing at the bit to get on the track as their last two events were won by Mother Nature! The last action came with a Hurley win at Jacksonville on August 24.

The POWRi midgets will also be on hand at Spoon River! Red hot Kyle Larson was the winner of their event last year, and the midgets always go three and four-wide on the high banks!

Tickets are just $20 for general admission. Children 6-10 are $5, with 5 and under FREE! Racing is scheduled for 7 p.m.! For more information, visit www.SpoonRiverSpeedway.webs.com!

Lincoln/Earl Gaerte Memorial Highlight MOWA Weekend!

(Bill W) August 29, 2012 – The Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) roars back to the track this weekend with an Illinois/Indiana doubleheader that proves to be one of the highlights of the season! On Friday night, the series returns to the Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, Illinois. History will be made Saturday night, September 1, when the $3,000 to win 1st Annual Earl Gaerte Memorial will be held at the dirt track at the Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana!

In four meetings at Lincoln Speedway there have been four different winners! In 2011, Korey Weyant and AJ Bruns claimed victory. This season, veterans Jimmy Hurley (June 15) and Jerrod Hull (July 6) were winners. Hull leads the point race over Bruns heading into Lincoln. Jim Moughan Jr. and Weyant are tied in a battle for third, ahead of Ben Wagoner.

The series will be making its first visit to Plymouth Speedway. The facility has hosted a handful of open-wheel dirt events this season. Tony Stewart claimed a sprint car victory there on August 18. This will mark MOWA’s first ever appearance in the “Hoosier State”. It will honor legendary engine builder Earl Gaerte. Drivers will be vying for the $3,000 to win prize that includes a 6’ trophy!

Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow this Friday night at Lincoln! Tickets are just $15, with children 12 and under FREE! For more information, visit www.LincolnSpeedway.org!

The Earl Gaerte Memorial will pay $3,000 to the winner and will also feature non-wing mini-sprints! Adult tickets are just $15, with children 6-12 $5, and 5 and under FREE! Gates are scheduled to open at 4:00 p.m. with hot laps scheduled for 6:00 p.m.! For more information, visit www.PlymouthSpeedway.net!
