CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction Opening Night Story and Results

Columbus Junction, IA (Friday, April 22, 2016) – The 2016 racing season at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, Iowa kicked off Friday, April 22nd, with the action being brought to you by the Louisa County Fair Association. Steve Stewart (P&L Transportation), Mike Hughes (Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Cars), Jason McDaniel (Tyson Fresh Meats SportMods), Jimmy Halcomb (Mod Lites), Steven Struck (Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compacts), and Jacob Brown (Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Haulers) all stood in victory lane on the night.

The first feature to take to the track was the 8 lap Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Haulers, with Jacob Brown and Jerad Ruble drawing the front row for the event. Brown would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1. Brown then led all 8 laps to pick up the win. Billy Stanford was 2nd, Drake Fenton was 3rd, with Ruble 4th.

Jimmy Halcomb and Rob Guss lead the field to the green flag in the 10 lap Mod Lite feature, with Halcomb grabbing the lead on lap 1. Halcomb would pull away to lead all 10 laps and claim the win. Wyatt Wilkerson was 2nd, Rob Guss was 3rd, Brad Lucy was 4th, with Michael Dominguez rounding out the top 5.

Up Next was the 16 lap Tyson Fresh Meats SportMods, with Ryan Walker and Aaron Osweiler drawing the front row. Osweiler would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Jason McDaniel, who started 5th, and Walker. McDaniel tried several times to get around Osweiler over the next 8 laps, before grabbing the lead on lap 10. McDaniel then led the final 6 laps to pick up the win. Colton Livezey was 2nd, Osweiler was 3rd, Logan Anderson started 9th and finished 4th, with Dan Keltner coming home in 5th.

Adam Bell and Tad Payne led the field to the green flag in the 20 lap Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Car feature, with Bell jumping out front on lap 1 over Payne and Blaine Dopler. Bell then held the top spot until lap 4, when Payne was able to slip by for the lead. Two laps later, lap 6, Mike Hughes, who started 11th, took the top spot away from Payne and then pulled away to claim the win. Rod Staats was 2nd, Dopler was 3rd, Payne was 4th, with Kirk Kinsley rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 20 lap P&L Transportation Modified feature, with Brandon Rothzen and Brandon Banks drawing the front row. Banks would jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Rothzen and Steve Stewart. Stewart slipped into the runner up spot on lap 5 and then went to work on Banks for the lead. On lap 7 Stewart was able to make the pass of Banks to take over the top spot. Stewart then held off Jim Redmann, who started 8th, over the final 2 laps to claim the win. Dugan Thye started 7th and finished 3rd, Matt Bodman was 4th, with Dan Albright coming home in 5th.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 14 lap Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compacts, with Shane Wright and Bill Whalen Jr. leading the field to green. Whalen Jr. would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Brendon Schultheis and Jake Benischek. Mechanical troubles on lap 10 forced Whalen Jr. to pull in, handing the lead over to Steven Struck, who started 11th. Struck then led the final 4 laps to pick up the win. Levi Heath came from 5th to finish 2nd, Darin Smith finished 3rd after starting in 12th, Schultheis was 4th, with Wayne Noble coming from 10th to finish 5th.

Coming up next Friday, April 29th at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, Iowa is Curry’s Transportation Night. Racing action will continue in the P&L Transportation Modifieds, Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Cars, Tyson Fresh Meats SportMods, Mod Lites, Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compacts, and Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Haulers.

Gates will open at 5:30 PM, Hot Laps at 7 PM, and Racing at 7:30 PM. Grandstand Admission will be adults $10, seniors $9, students (11-17) $7, and Kids 6 & under FREE!. Pit passes are $25, non member drivers $30, ages (7-13) $15, and ages (6 & under) $10.
