WHEATLAND, MO (May 15, 2013) – In a tune up for the weekend’s Lucas Oil Show Me 100 Presented by Protect the Harvest.com, Newport, Tennessee’s Jimmy Owens dominated the Lucas Oil MLRA main event Thursday evening. The triumph was worth $5,000, and is Owens fifth at the state of the art 3/8 mile oval. “We had a good car all night long,” said Owens. “We were able to capitalize off of a couple of guys mistakes in the heat race. It got us a good starting spot for the feature. They throwed the green and we was able to run high, low. The car was just awesome tonight.”

Tyler Reddick and Steve Shaver had quite a race for second and third, just a few paces behind Owens. Reddick moved around Shaver, after numerous laps neck and neck, and went on to secure the runner up spot. Shaver held on for third in his Bobby Labonte Racing Longhorn Chassis.

When it came to Lucas Oil MLRA series regulars there was a handful in the field, and Tony Jackson Jr did quite well. He passed five cars and finished fourth. The forty lap race was contested without a single caution.

Racing gets underway Friday at 7:30 PM with Time Trials, Heat Races, Manufactures Dash and Race of Champions. Saturday is also slated for a 7:30 PM start time, with last chance consolation races, Midwest Sheet Metal Show Me Challenge, USRA Modified Feature and the 100 lap $30,000 to win finale.

GREENWOOD, Neb. (May 23, 2013) History repeated itself at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb. as Danny Lasoski took the Protect the Harvest A-Feature with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real for the second year running in the Parker and Mark Burch backed No. 1m.

Becoming the seventh different winner of the 2013 Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real season, Lasoski worked past Jason Johnson on the thirteenth round, working the extreme low groove of the four-tenths mile clay oval, to take the unique I-80 payday of all $2 bills for a total of $3,000.

In victory lane, Lasoski gave great thanks to car owner Mark Burch, “I want to thank Mark Burch for giving me the opportunity to drive his great racecar. You know, he builds his own engines with the help of Tim Engler and Huggins Cams; he had a brand new Huggins Cam tonight to try this thing out. We knew we had our work cut out for us.”

Pulling the third starting spot in the night’s redraw, Lasoski fell back to fifth on the start. Utilizing a restart on Lap 5 for the spun No. 17w of Cole Wood, the Dover, Mo. shoe shot to the runner up spot. Giving chase to the MVT No. 41 of Jason Johnson, the pair swapped lines on the race track with Lasoski searching for room to pass before honing in on the bottom groove.

Caution lights flashed on Lap 10 for the No. 48 of Jake Martens, sending both Johnson and Lasoski to the bottom line on the restart with Brian Brown, Wayne Johnson, and Brad Loyet in tow.

Working the middle groove through turns three and four, Johnson was finally unable to keep Lasoski at bay as the Speedway Motors No. 1m earned the lead on Lap 13. Four laps later, the caution would again be displayed as Johnson spun his Stenhouse, Jr. Motorsports No. 41 to a stop in turn four. Johnson would restart at the tail of the field.

Moving Brian Brown to second in the Casey’s General Store/FVP No. 21, Brown would keep his Maxim Chassis winged over on the cushion for the next five laps before moving to the inside line with Lasoski beginning to pull his advantage.

Working into slower traffic on Lap 20, the time with the back markers would be short lived as Cole Wood spun to a stop for the second time in night’s feature, ending his night on Lap 23.

Brown again worked to the cushion in an attempt to build momentum on the Burch Motorsports No. 1m, but again watched as Lasoski pulled to a 3.544 second advantage until the white flag turned to the caution, turning the lap count back to two for the restart.

Danny Lasoski would go uncontested on the restart to victory with Brian Brown second and Brad Loyet completing the all Missouri podium. Brown also earned an extra $300 in the Podium Challenge presented by Electrical Systems.

Logan Forler earned fourth with a last lap pass on Wayne Johnson with Billy Alley following suit to complete the top five.

Johnson would settle for sixth with Johnny Herrera coming from twentieth to earn the night’s PitStopUSA Hard Charger of the Night. After restarting at the tail, Jason Johnson motored back to finish eighth with Dustin Morgan and Lucas Wolfe making up the top ten.

The night’s Joie of Seating B-Feature went to Ryan Roberts. Heat Races began with Logan Forler taking BMRS Heat one. Dustin Morgan topped Rod End Supply Heat two with Brian Brown taking Wesmar Heat three. Saldana Racing Products Heat four was won by Jason Johnson.

The Hawk Racing Performance Products Fastest Lap of the Night went to Jason Johnson with a time in the A-Feature of 16.591 seconds.

The Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real continues to the Great American Dirt Track in Jetmore, Kan. on Saturday, May 25 for the fifth annual Steve King Memorial.

By Mike Ruefer

A Half Mile from Home

I guess you could say that this story started last year or 40 years ago. It’s a love story and has to do with the soft spot I have in my heart for the half mile dirt track. Since last year is a lot closer and my mind is sharper for the most recent I’ll go back one year to my first trip to Hartford (Michigan) Motor Speedway.

It was a Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series show and the old speed plant was all gussied up for the traveling series. It was a bright sunny day and I was happy. I was gleaming with excitement as the guys took to the track and my friend Jim Den Hamer asked why I was so happy. I said because I was at a BIG half mile and I loved the place. Jim said something like. “You Iowa guys and your half miles,” and we both went back to taking pictures.

It’s hard for me not to like half miles. There are 99 counties in Iowa and all have a County Fair. At one time when horse power was truly a horse with power almost all featured horse racing and most of the tracks were half miles. After the WWI years many of those tracks converted to Internal Combustion Horse Power and again many remained as half miles. Most of the tracks I went to as a youngster were half miles. It’s what I was raised on and yes I still like half miles.

To me there is nothing like watching a Hot Rod V-8 race car scream down a long straightaway and fly through a sweeping turn and drag race down to the next corner. It takes horse power, handling and nerves of steel to go as fast as you can for as long as you can. It’s not always side by side racing like you see on a short track, it’s different and I love it! One minute the car is right in front of you and the next it is so far away.

There once was a day when one of the best half mile tracks in all of Iowa was in my home town of Davenport. The grand track started as a one mile in 1904 and later when the Mississippi Valley Fair Grounds was born in 1920, it was shortened to half. It was a marvel as crowds of over 60,000 would pack the grounds to watch the racing of the day. Big cars, Sprint cars, Midgets and Stock cars were the rave on the half mile. Through the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, it stood the test of time. Not till 1982 and the construction of the quarter mile did the grand big track see competition becoming a special event only attraction and going into dusty slumber.

The move to smaller tracks is nothing new, just as there are few one mile dirt tracks left today, there will be a time when there are few half mile tracks. There are just fewer weekly racing programs on half miles as fair boards and promoters look to downsize cost and provide more side by side racing that sits right in front of the fans. It’s almost inevitable when a small track is built inside the half mile that before long the big track goes idle. It’s as if the low budget slow cars rule the roost thus carving out the half mile traditions.

Needless to say, I truly enjoy my opportunities to see racing on half miles. West Liberty, Knoxville, I-80, Adams County, Oskaloosa, Webster City, Columbus Junction, Des Moines, Cresco and Farley are special places to me. They help me remember my shuttered friends like Freeport, Hawkeye Downs, Granite City, Knox County and Santa Fe. This is not to say I don’t like smaller tracks, I do! The biggest difference is that half miles take me back home and my hometown track the Davenport Speedway half mile.

I grew up in Davenport and at Davenport Speedway. It was the early 1970’s and I was a Ronnie Weedon fan. Watching “Old Blue” cruise the track was my Friday night ritual. I then returned home in the 1980’s to see the Busch All Star Tour resurrect the big track and witness Steve Kosiski dominate show after show. As the All Star’s dimmed we had “Open Late Model Shootouts” and then later the WDRL. Davenport was special again but nothing was more special than the 2000’s and the great run of Hav-A-Tamp, UDTRA and Lucas Oil dirt late model events. These yearly events brought the biggest, best cars and drivers to the famed oval.

The Hav-A-Tampa years were a hit after hit and before long other tracks wanted what Davenport had. As time went on the luster went dull, the magic gone as the racing market became saturated and stuffed out the cigar aroma. The WDRL with Jim Wilson at the helm did a great job of keeping big shows on the half mile with annual stops but that world ended too in 2009 with Chad Simpson winning the April open motor event.

Over the next few years the track lay crumbled and worn serving as a launching pad while the smaller track laughed at her dust. It was not until September 2011 and then again in 2012 that the Grand Lady showed her stuff with exciting IMCA Deery Bro’s Summer Series action. Just maybe she still had something left in her to excite the fans and return her to glory.

This takes me to last week’s Corn Belt Clash race. With local open motor cars dwindling or off to greener pay windows the event pulled in enough good Hot Rods to show what the track still has. Davenport Speedway has a way of making stars shine over the years since the Best of Best have raced there. The star this night was Jason Fegar. The Illinois “Highside Hustler” did just that and hustled the track looking like he has raced half miles all his life even though he has not. It was marvelous to watch. It proved to me and all that the Big Half Mile still had what takes to make a great race.

So here we are now and the dirt is settling to dust once again, churning to be graded, watered and packed for racing. We will wait until the September Song before she roars once again. I will hit the road and see many races on tracks of all sizes, all while wanting and thinking that I’d like to be a Half Mile from Home.

Take care and safe travels,

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 22th, 2013) – Another Wednesday Night with very questionable weather all day and night. A few hours before race time mother nature dropped a good shower to help with the moisture on the race track but that didn’t prevent the race action from happening on Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night at the Races.

More items were auction off before and during the intermission for Mark Widmar including 2 seater sprint car rides with Tyler Groenendyk. Iowa Speedway’s Craig Armstrong was also in attendance on the night. Also the track crowned the most popular driver as four drivers were in the top 4 and they were Nathan Wood, Dustin Griffiths, Kris Walker and Bobby Greene.

Spencer Diercks grabbed the lead early and never looked back to take the win in the KBOE Radio IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature, that went green-to-checkered. Todd Cooney passed Nick Marolf on lap 2 to take the runner up position but couldn’t catch the 16 year old Diercks. Marolf finished 3rd, Darrel DeFrance finish 4th and Kurt Kile was 5th. Next race for the late models at SIS is on Wednesday June 19th.

“Hollywood” Brandon Banks started on the outside row in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature. Banks grabbed the lead early and started to pull away but then caution waved when Steve Pumphrey spun in turn 4. Banks got a great restart and started to pull away and then caution waved again on lap 7 for debris. That caution didn’t faze, Banks as he again got a great restart and started to pull away until the caution waved again on lap 12 when Bill Gibson saw his engine expire. Banks looked to go on to the win but then a caution came out just after the white flag forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Banks slipped up on the exit of turn 4 that allowed Tyler Groenendyk to slip by. Groenendyk went on to take the win over Banks, Bill Davis Jr., Cayden Carter and Todd Hansen.

In the IMCA Sport Compacts feature it was Shawn Cooney leading the first 6 laps before he bobbled and that allowed John Whalen to slip by on lap 7. Cooney bobbled again on lap 9 that knocked him back to fourth. John Whalen took the win his 2nd of the season at SIS. Merv Chandler finished second, Bill Whalen Jr. finished third, Cooney was fourth and Trent Orwig was fifth.

Just as they were completing the first lap in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feaure the caution waved when Curtis VanDerWal, Chris Larson, Levi Layman and Ben Kates got together on the front stretch. “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter grabbed the early lead however and appeared to be pulling away but Brett Lowry chased him down. Lowry passed Carter on the last lap to take the win as the yellow flag would fly shortly after the checkered. Carter, Tyler Gross, Tyler Heckart and Eric Flander rounded out the top 5.

Erick Knutsen from Cedar Rapids lead the first 3 laps in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but he was passed by Dale Porter. Porter looked to be pulling away until the only race caution came out on lap 7 for Derek Hodges and Justin Hook in turn 2. Porter had the racing veteran Bill Bonnett on his back bumper and that is where Bonnett remained the rest of the distance. Bonnett tried several times to get by Porter but it was Porter holding on to take the win. Knutsen finish third, Dustin Griffiths was fourth and Donavon Nunnikhoven was fifth.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature it was Brad Pinkerton leading the first 2 laps. Jeff Joldersma got by Pinkerton on lap 3 for the lead, Zack Vanderbeek and Damon Murty got by Pinkerton on lap 4 and 5 respectively. Joldersma held off several challenges from Vanderbeek and Murty to take th win. Vanderbeek finish 2nd with Murty in 3rd. Nathan Wood found his way up to 4th and Jason Cook was 5th.

Next Wednesday Night will be the Vital Men and John’s Tree Service IMCA Sport Mod Special with $750 to win in the and a $250 bonus to drivers that have raced at least once this season at SIS making it a possible $1,000 to win. Also racing will be the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm every Wednesday Night.

(Bill W) May 23, 2013 – More bad luck was in the offing for Jerrod Hull and the Rockwell American #12 team last weekend at Montgomery Motorsports Park in New Florence, Missouri. He broke his quick-change gears while vying for the lead. This weekend, will offer a chance at that first win of the season with events in Benton, Missouri, Pevely, Missouri and Quincy, Illinois.

After getting rained out at Jacksonville, Illinois’ Mary Lee Standridge Memorial, the MOWA series headed to New Florence. Things started well in the heat. “The night started out well enough,” says Jerrod. “We drew outside row one for the heat race and we were able to win it. That’s three heat race wins in three races for us, so I thought that was cool. Unfortunately, it has seemed to turn sour after that.”

After running from fourth to third in the Dash, Jerrod would line up inside row two in the feature. “We were running third,” he says. “It was a really good fight in lapped traffic between AJ (Bruns), Jimmy (Hurley) and me. We were all there slicing and dicing.”

Things were going well, and the Sikeston, Missouri driver made a bid for the lead. “I kind of dove under AJ once,” says Jerrod. “I thought we may even end up with the lead there. At that point, one of the lapped cars flipped out of the place, so that put me back in third for the restart.”

That’s when mechanical issues arose. “I could smell smoke and rear-end grease, so I wondered what was going on,” says Jerrod. “We went maybe another three laps, and we busted the quick-change gears and the rear plate, so we were done after that.”

The problem added to a string of bad luck that saw Jerrod upside down twice in his previous two starts. “That’s the way racing goes sometimes,” he says. “I don’t know what else we can do, but keep racing. We’ll try this weekend and see what happens.”

Jerrod was encouraged by how well the car was running. “We were definitely fast,” he says. “We weren’t back in fifth or sixth just hanging out. We were in contention to win, so that was pretty cool. We were pretty fast all night long. We’ll put some new gears in it and try again.”

The team has three shows planned this weekend, starting close to home. “We’re running in Benton, Missouri this Friday night for their special show,” says Jerrod. “It’s eight miles from my house. Then we have Pevely and Quincy (with MOWA) Saturday and Sunday. Winning one of those would be nice.”

Jerrod and the #12 team would like to thank: Rockwell American, Midland Performance, Super Shox, Sebastian Sand Blasting & Powder Coating, Inc., Sherwin Williams, Chuck’s Small Engines, Don Hamilton, HRP, Lighthouse Christian Center, Logo Daddy, Hoosier Tire, Simpson, Weld, Automotive Machine, Maxim and Heartland Trailer Manufacturing.

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (May 22, 2013) Going back-to-back with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real, Johnny Herrera “slid” his way to the night’s Protect the Harvest A-Feature victory at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo. following stellar battles with Danny Lasoski and Brian Brown.

“I really just started pacing it” said Herrera about the way he drove early on in his Print Place No. 45x. “.

I knew Brian Brown, or Jason Johnson, or somebody would be coming. We were holding our own and he [Lasoski] wasn’t really getting away while we were pacing. I thought the top would come in early, and tried it early in the race and didn’t go back until I heard Brian and decided I better start getting up there.”

Setting the tone during Hot Laps as the quickest car on the track, the redraw placed the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 45x outside the front row. Diving into the first two turns, Lasoski gained the advantage over the No. 45x, only to have the red lights blink on for the No. 5m of Miranda Arnold.

The restart yielded similar results for Lasoski in the Parker/Mark Burch No. 1m, only to see the caution fly after a single lap for the stalled No. 28 of Jonathan Cornell.

Underway, Lasoski and Herrera diced it up before the Dover, Mo. shoe began pulling a sizable lead, leaving Herrera to contend with Brian Brown. Working the inside line, Herrera held the FVP/Casey’s General Store No. 21 at bay despite Brown’s best attempts.

Caution lights flashed on Lap 11 for the spun 94 of Jeff Swindell as Brown and Herrera crossed the line 0.098 second apart.

Single file to the orange cone, Lasoski continued to lead off the bottom line of the Valley Speedway with Herrera in his tracks. Working the cushion, Brown pulled even with Herrera on Lap 14; showing Herrera the groove.

Switching high, the chase was on as Herrera worked past Lasoski on Lap 17 for the race lead with Brown in tow for the runner up spot the following lap.

Slowed for the final time on Lap 23 for the flipped No. o5 of Brad Loyet, the final laps saw Herrera and Brown going slide job, for slide job nearly every lap until Herrera finally worked to a 1.021 second advantage.

Brian Brown claimed second, holding off Danny Lasoski after the final restart. Tony Bruce, Jr. and Jason Johnson completed the top five from ninth.

Logan Forler was sixth followed by Seth Bergman from eighteenth. Lucas Wolfe climbed from fourteenth to eighth with Cody Baker from twentieth and Tim Crawley from twenty-second to round out the top ten, earning the PitStopUSA.com Hard Charger of the Night.

Rod End Supply Heat one went to Brian Brown with the Ti22 Heat two scored by Miranda Arnold. BMRS Heat three was Danny Lasoski with Wyatt Burks taking Heat four powered by Wesmar. The SBI Fuel Bladder Heat five went to Tony Bruce, Jr.

The Joie of Seating B-Feature one was captured by Jonathan Cornell with Seth Bergman topping the DMI B-Feature two.

The Hawk Performance Fastest Lap of the Night was by Johnny Herrera with a 13.314 second lap.

Paired with the Speedway Motors Warrior Region, Brian Brown took high points for the region followed by Lasoski. Cody Baker earned third place points followed by Tyler Blank and Randy Hibbs.

(Bill W) May 22, 2013 – It proved to be a long night of racing for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team at Knoxville on Saturday night. The team had to replace a pair of rear-ends during the night’s events and almost lost a third in the feature. They’ll rebound with three races this week, starting tonight with the ASCS National series at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri.

The first issue with the rear-end was found in hot laps. “We went out to hot lap and it shucked the inboard caliper off,” says Wayne. “We didn’t have time to change rear-ends, so we just went out and qualified with no brakes. That’s why I ran the top and we ended up 13th quick.”

The Knoxville, Iowa driver started outside row one of his heat, and was able to win it comfortably. “We put a brand new rear-end in for the heat,” says Wayne. “It was brand spanking new, and the last lap of the heat race, it kicked the inboard caliper off again. We changed the rear-end again for the feature.”

The frustrated driver struggled with the handling of the car and finished where he started (12th) in the main event. “We weren’t good,” says Wayne. “I got home. We got everything washed up and put back in the shop, and doing maintenance, it was about to throw another caliper off. I don’t know what’s going on…if it’s a bent driveshaft or what.”

After just one race last weekend, things will get busier, starting tonight. “We’re looking forward to going back to Valley Speedway tonight,” says Wayne. “Then we’re going to I-80 Speedway (near Greenwood, Nebraska on Thursday) and back to Knoxville (Saturday).”

Next week, things will really get ramped up as Wayne goes on the road with the Outlaws for a month and a half. “Things will be getting busy for us,” he says. “We’ll be running with the Outlaws for a while, starting at Attica (Ohio on May 31) and continuing with them pretty much through the King’s Royal.”

Looking for a Mechanic

Wayne is looking for a full-time mechanic that is motivated and would relocate to Knoxville. Wayne is running around a 70-race schedule. You would not need a CDL, but would need experience driving a big truck and trailer. Experience maintaining a sprint car is a must. Salary depends on experience
