HAYS, KS (April 12)—RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, returned to racing action Saturday night, April 12, with the first night of track points.

Mike Petersilie led the opening lap of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature before Marty Clark and ‘Smokin’ Joe Cleveland tangled, bringing out a caution.  After the restart, first heat winner Kyle Rohleder drove by Petersilie to take control.  Rohleder was on a rail as he drove away from the rest of the field, lapping cars throughout the race.  But a caution waved on lap 19 for a spinning Craig Colgin, setting up a green-white-checkered finish and bunching up the field, giving drivers a shot at the Wakeeney driver.  But Rohleder was up to the challenge and held off his challengers for the win.  ‘Dynomite’ Dylan Sherfick, Corey Lagroon, Clay Sellard and Petersilie rounded out the top five.  Second heat winner Brian Calhoon was sixth.

The IMCA Stock Car feature was close the entire 20 laps.  Nolan Remus led the field the first 9 laps, but Colby’s Jeff Tubbs took the lead at the halfway mark.  Remus regained the lead on lap 12, but Tubbs returned the favor a few laps later and held on for the win.  Remus edged out Dustin McClurg for second, with B.J. Wagoner and Jason Rogers completing the top five.  Heat race winners were Geoff Jermark and ‘Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs.

Belleville’s ‘Frye Man’ Tyler Frye, took over the top spot from Austin Carter on lap 3 of the 15-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event and led the rest of the way to the checkers for his second appearance in victory lane at the 3/8-mile oval this year.  Third heat winner Blaine Walt gave chase but had to settle for the runner-up spot, followed by Carter, Nate Ginest and Trenton Kleweno.  Frye and Daniel Gottschalk also won heat races.

Over 30 IMCA Hobby Stocks checked in Saturday night.  Trevor ‘The Hit Man’ Schmidt led the opening lap of the A-main, but spun in turn 4 on lap 2 to bring out a caution.  After the caution, Brady Bencken led the field to the halfway mark, followed by Adam Armstrong of Beatrice, NE, Colton Pfeifer and Jeromy Wagner.  Armstrong then passed Bencken on the following lap and led the final 6 laps for his second trip to victory lane this season at Hays.  ‘The Wild Child’ Garrett Hager was second, followed by Pfeifer.  ‘Cheeseburger’ G.W. Fuller started 19th after having to run the B-main but charged his way to fourth, followed by Aaron Gray.  Heat race winners were Armstrong, Hager, Kent Tammen and ‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel, while Eric Ross was victorious in the B-feature.

In the IMCA Sport Compact feature, Stockton’s Michael Smith took the lead from Dean Herzog on lap 2 and led the remaining distance for the win.  Kirk Pfannenstiel was third, followed by Richard Tegethoff and T.J. Janousek.  Smith and Pfannenstiel were the heat race winners.

The first 150 kids through the gate received Kids Club t-shirts and an easter egg.

The evening’s race sponsor was Discovery Drilling of Hays.

Racing returns to RPM Speedway Saturday, April 26, with the regular five divisions returning at 7:00 p.m.
