Wheatland, Missouri (June 19, 2016) – San Hafertepe Jr. strengthened his hold on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Winged Sprint Car championship lead, winning Saturday night’s Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Cup Sizzlin’ Speedweek Finale at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Hafertepe, of Sunnyvale, Texas, pulled away after a late restart to beat Brad Loyet in the race Presented by MAVTV to post his third national-series feature win of the season and second of Speedweek 2016 while earning the Speedweek championship.

“Me and Brad had it going,” a smiling Haftertepe said in a victory lane interview. “That was a hell of a race. If the fans don’t like that, I don’t know what they want. Brad races clean. We both race hard. Just a hell of a race.”

In the Boss Chassis WAR Wingless Auto Racing Sprint Car feature, Korey Weyant made it three straight feature wins in the series with a late pass.

A crowd of approximately 3,700 was on its feet through much of the ASCS 30-lap feature which saw Hafertepe grab the lead on a lap two restart. But it was anything but an easy drive the rest of the way.

Ray Allen Kulhanek was running third on lap 12 when he spun going for second place in a battle with Loyet. Kulhanek kept rolling and collected Tommy Bryant to bring out the race’s third caution.

Before the caution, Loyet grabbed the lead for a moment, but Hafertepe was credited with the lead at the caution.

A fourth caution waved on lap 24 when third-running Matt Covington spun after shredding a tire. Hafertepe and Loyet had been trading slide jobs for several laps, but Loyet unable to make his passes stick.

Third wasn’t the place to be as Josh Baughman had a flat on lap 25 as he gave chase to the top two.

One lap after the restart, Johnny Herrera – who entered the night one point behind Hafertepe in the ASCS national standings – had a mechanical failure while running seventh. He finished 16th.

Hafertepe, who appeared much superior in clean air, was able to drive away after the restart.

“The yellows fell wrong for us,” said Loyet, who won a night earlier at the State Fair Speedway in Sedalia. “But overall, it was a good night for us.”

Jonathan Cornell of Sedalia wound up third with Logan Forler of Boise, Idaho in fourth.

Heat race winners for the ASCS Series were Covington, Loyet, Chance Morton, Brandon Hanks and Kulhanek. Covington went on to win the first qualifier for the feature, with Aaron Reutzel and Wayne Johnson winning the others.

Weyant wins WAR feature: Korey Weyant of Springfield, Ill., made it three straight victories in the Boss Chassis WAR Wingless Series with a late pass to prevail.

Weyant lost the lead on lap 17 when Mitch Wissmiller passed him coming to the start-finish line. But Wissmiller spun as Weyant put a slide job on him and brought out the caution on lap 21 – just four laps after taking the lead and four laps from the finish.

“We lost the lead a couple of times,” Weyant said. “The top wasn’t that great in (turns) three and four), but I was kind of committed to it. Mitch got me and I gained on him in three and four and I tried to do a slide job. Sure enough, it worked.”

Weyant held off runner-up Riley Kriesel of Warsaw over the final four laps. Craig Carroll charged from a 13th starting position to finish third with Clinton Boyles comings home in fourth.

Weekly racing set to return: The Budweiser Weekly Championship Series resumes next Saturday, June 25, with the Bolivar Hearld-Free Press Midseason Championships. Discount coupons for the program are available in the Bolivar Herald-Free Press.
