Wheatland, Missouri (September 24, 2016) – It didn’t take long – just under seven minutes to be exact – for Wayne Johnson to score a wire-to-wire 25-lap victory Friday in Night Two of the 6th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Johnson captured his third Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour victory of the season and first since May with the lightning-quick performance in a caution-free event. Johnson, of Knoxville, Iowa, earned $3,000.

Korey Weyant grabbed the win in the Boss Wingless Auto Racing Series feature. It was another big car count, with 63 ASCS and 45 WAR entries in the pits.
The big finale on Saturday feature sees the ASCS drivers chasing a $10,000 feature prize and the WAR group gunning for a $1,200 winner’s check.

Johnson said the win was sweet and one he’s wanted for a long time because Hockett, the Missouri open-wheel ace, was “a good friend of mine.

“We’ll just keep working on this thing,” Johnson said, looking ahead to Saturday. “I think we can make it even better.”

Aaron Reutzel, who chased Johnson in heavy lapped traffic over the final laps, settled for second ahead of veteran Sammy Swindell who grabbed third after a runner-up finish on Thursday. Those two exchanged some words and gestures after the race.

Johnson said things got hairy late in the race when he had to navigate slower traffic as Reutzel, who started fifth, and Swindell, advancing from seventh, gave hot pursuit.

“I felt I picked the wrong line with about three to go,” Johnson said. “I got trapped behind a lapped car. But I figured if I can’t pass him, they can’t pass me either.”

Johnson was able to quickly solve the dilemma, find an opening and celebrated the win.

Tony Bruce finished fourth and Jack Dover took fifth. Johnny Herrera, the Night One feature winner, salvaged 10th after starting the feature 20th.

Weyant takes control: Korey Weyant, after a runner-up feature finish on Thursday, sailed into the lead on lap nine and went on to win the 25-lap WAR feature and earn $1,000. It was his fifth series victory of the season.

“We messed up in the beginning,” the Springfield, Ill., driver said in a victory lane interview, noting he slipped from a front-row starting spot back to fourth in the early laps.

“The track was so good. I knew once everybody got back in line we could pick them off one at a time. We had the right combination tonight,” Weyant added.

Weyant pulled away to a comfortable lead after making an outside pass of Ron Caho Jr. for the lead in turn two. He was never threatened as the race went caution free after a red flat on lap two when Ryan Kitchen of Lincoln, Neb., flipped for the second straight night. He was not injured.

Pole-sitter Derek Hagar wound up second. Meanwhile, Thursday feature winner Zach Daum was involved in a heat-race crash and did not make the feature.

Ryan Kitchen of Lincoln, Neb., got upside down for the second night in a row to bring out a red flag after one lap of the feature. He walked away uninjured.

Earlier start Saturday: A reminder that final-night action begins an hour earlier than the first two programs. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 5:45 and racing at 6:30. Ticket prices are:
