Stewart and Huls Score First Wins of the Season at 34 Raceway

West Burlington, IA (Saturday, August 26, 2017) – Another beautiful night for racing greeted the fans and drivers on Saturday, August 26th at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, as it was the Prelude to Season Championship Night. Extra money was added to the purse thanks to Pitside Parts and Roberts Tire Center. At the end of the nights action two drivers scored their first of the season at the track, while five others picked up multiple wins at the track.

 

The 15 lap Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMod feature was the first to take to the track on this night, with Colton Livezey and Kyle Hill drawing the front row. Just as the green flag was waved the caution light came on, as Hill, Tom Lathrop, and Andrew Burk spun off the track in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. While under caution Livezey had to pit for a right rear flat, which moved Brandon Lennox and Austen Becerra to the front row for the original restart. On the restart Lennox jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Becerra and Justin Veloz, who started 8th. Then just after lap 1 was scored complete Randy LaMar spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Lennox grabbed the lead on the restart, with Becerra and Veloz close behind. Two laps later, lap 3, Jeffrey DeLonjay and Hill spun in turn 2 to bring out the third caution of the race. Once again Lennox jumped back out front on the restart, with Becerra and Austin Howes, who started 7th, following. While Lennox worked the top of the track, Becerra would try the bottom to get the lead away from Lennox over the next 6 laps. But Lennox was able to hold him off on each lap at the line to keep the lead. The action up front was slowed for the fourth and final time on lap 9, when Lathrop spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Lennox moved back out front, with Becerra and Howes close behind. Coming off turn 2 to complete lap 11 Becerra was able to make the bottom groove work to slip under Lennox for the top spot. Lennox tried to work back by Becerra over the final 4 laps, but Becerra was able to hold him off to claim his seventh win of the season at the track and second of the weekend. As he also picked up the win Friday night in Donnellson, Iowa. Lennox was 2nd, Howes was 3rd, Hill came back from the rear twice to finish in 4th, with Sean Wyett finishing 5th after starting in 10th.

 

Up next was the 12 lap Deery Brothers IMRA Midget feature, with Adam Taylor and Dillon Morely leading the field to the green. Taylor used his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Morley and Kurt Mueller. Morley would follow in Taylor’s tire tracks over the entire 12 laps, but wasn’t able to mount a challenge on Taylor for the lead. As Taylor held on to pick up his third win of the season at 34 Raceway. Morley was 2nd, Jacob Sollenberger was 3rd, Mueller was 4th, with Chris Bolander coming home in 5th.

 

Clint Morehouse and Austin Bowling led the field to green in the 12 lap Sunoco Fuel Mod Lite feature, with Morehouse jumping out front to lead lap 1 over Mike Morrill, who started 8th, and Joel Huggins. The lead for Morehouse only lasted for 1 lap, as Morrill used the top of the track coming out of turn 2 to take the top spot on lap 2. Then Morrill started to pull away from the field, when the red flag came out on lap 5. Bowling spun in turn 4 and collected Scott Sappington Jr., who ended up rolling to bring out the red. Sappington Jr. would climb from his car okay. On the restart Morrill moved back out front, with Jon Padilla, who started 6th, over taking Morehouse for the runner up spot. Once again Morrill started to pull away from the field, when the second and final caution appeared on lap 10. This time Padilla, who was running 2nd, spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Morrill jumped back out front on the restart, with Jason Masengarb, who started 9th, grabbing second away from Morehouse. Masengarb would try to get by Morrill over the final lap, but Morrill was able to hold him off to score his third win of the season at the track. Masengarb settled for 2nd, Morehouse was 3rd, Padilla came back up from his spin on lap 10 to finish in 4th, with Brain Tipps rounding out the top 5.

 

The 20 lap WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprint feature was up next, with Damian Getchell and Wyatt Wilkerson leading the field to green. Getchell used his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Bailey Goldesberry and Brayden Gaylord, who started 5th. The action up front was slowed for the first and only time on lap 2, when Travis Porter spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Gaylord used the bottom of the track to get past Getchell for the top spot. While Gaylord paced the field out front, Ben Wagoner, who started 9th, and Jarrod Schneiderman, who started 10th, were working their way towards the front. Wagoner would work himself into second on lap 5, while Schneiderman climbed his way into third on lap 8. But without a caution there was no catching Gyalord on this night, who cruised to his second win of the season at 34 Raceway. Wagoner was 2nd, Schneiderman was 3rd, Harold Pohren started 11th and finished 4th, with Getchell coming home in 5th.

 

Up next was the 20 lap Pepsi IMCA Stock Car feature, with Rod Staats and Les Blakley drawing the front row for the event. Staats took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Blakley and Kirk Kinsley, who started 6th. While Staats worked the top of the track, Kinsley worked the bottom to try and get the lead away from Staats over the next 4 laps. But Staats was able to hold him off each lap, until Kinsley finally made the pass coming off turn 4 to complete lap 6. Two laps later, lap 8, Ethan Allen spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Abe Huls, who started 8th, slipped under Kinsley to take over the top spot, while Tom Bowling Jr., who started 10th, was also able to get past Kinsley for the runner up spot. Huls paced the field out front, while Bowling Jr., Brandon Rothzen, John Oliver Jr., who started 9th, and Kinsley raced two wide at times for the runner up spot. Bowling Jr. would secure second on lap 17 and then went to work on Huls for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 to take the checkered flag Bowling Jr. try to get under Huls for the win. But Huls held on to claim his fist win of the season at the track and second of the weekend, as he won Friday night in Donnellson, Iowa. Bowling Jr. settled for 2nd, Oliver Jr. over took Rothzen on the final lap to finish in 3rd, with Kinsley completing the top 5.

 

Cody Bowman and Lisa Benningfield were scheduled to lead the field to green in the 12 lap Sonny’s Market 4-Cylinder feature. But when Benningfield arrived late to staging this would move Ashton Blain to the outside of the front row for the start. Blain would use that move to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Brandon Lambert, who quickly moved to second from his 9th place starting spot. The lead for Blain only lasted for 1 lap, as Lambert slipped past him on lap 2 to take over the top spot. One lap later, lap 3, the first of three cautions appeared, as Benningfield slowed to a stop under the flagstand to bring out the yellow. On the restart Lambert moved back out front, with David Prim, who started 7th, and Blain following. Another lap scored complete produced another yellow, as Larry Miller lost a right rear tire in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Lambert again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Prim and Kimberly Abbott, who started 11th, battling for second. But another lap scored complete brought out the final caution of the race, as Matthew Milligan lost a right rear tire in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Once again Lambert jumped out front on the restart, with Abbott over taking Prim for second. Abbott would try looking under Lambert over the final 6 laps. But Lambert was able to hold her off to pick up his fourth win of the season at 34 Raceway. Abbott settled for 2nd, Prim was 3rd, Jeffrey DeLonjay was 4th, with Jason Ash finishing in 5th.

 

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 20 lap Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modifieds, with Ryan Cook and Jeff Waterman drawing the front row. Waterman used his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Cook and Joey Gower. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 3, when George Spence III, who was running 5th, spun off the track in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Waterman jumped back out front, with Rich Smith and Steve Stewart, who started 6th, slipping past Cook for second and third. Two laps, lap 5, later another caution appeared, as debris down the front stretch brought out the yellow. Once again Waterman grabbed the lead on the restart, with Smith and Stewart close behind. Two more laps scored complete produced another caution, as James Raleigh spun in turn 3 on lap 7 to bring out the yellow. Waterman jumped back out front on the restart, with Stewart over taking Smith for the runner up spot. The fourth caution of the event came out on lap 10, when Raleigh, who was 3 laps down, came out of the infield in front of the leaders and caused Stewart to spin to avoid hitting him. Stewart was given his spot back, as Raleigh wasn’t suppose to return to the track more then 1 lap down. On the restart Waterman jumped back out front, with Stewart and Smith close behind. While Waterman worked the top of the track, Stewart used the bottom to try and get the lead away over the next three laps. But when Colton Prevo spun in turn 2 to bring out the final caution, this would slow the battle for the lead. Once again Waterman grabbed the lead on the restart, with Stewart still working the bottom to try and get the lead. Coming off turn 4 to complete lap 16 Stewart was finally able to slid up in front of Waterman to take over the top spot. Stewart then pulled away over the final laps to score his first win of the season at the track, which was also worth $1,000. Waterman was 2nd, Smith was 3rd, Dugan Thye passed 8 cars from his 12th place starting spot to come home in 4th, with Brandon Banks finishing 5th after starting in 8th

 

Coming up next Saturday, September 2nd at 34 Raceway will be the Pepsi Season Championship Night, along with $5 Fan Appreciation Night. The 2017 track champions will be crowned in the WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprints, Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modifieds, Pepsi IMCA Stock Cars, Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMods, Sunoco Fuels Mod Lites, Deery Brothers IMRA Midgets, and Sonny’s Market 4-Cylinders.

Pit gates will open at 4:30 PM, the grandstands at 5 PM, hot laps at 6:30 PM, and racing at 7 PM. Grandstand admission will be just $5 for adults, seniors (60+) and students, with kids 10 & under FREE! Pit passes will be $25.
