Ryan Gustin captures Iowa Governor’s Cup
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 17, 2025) – Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa was the late model feature winner at the Iowa Governor’s Cup, held at the Davenport Speedway. The event featured the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. This was Gustin’s first Summer Nationals victory and his first-ever win at Davenport Speedway.
Thirty-three Summer Nationals Late Models were on hand Tuesday. Minnesota racer Jake Timm set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 13.612 seconds. Four late model heats were run with Timm, Gustin, Christian Hanger, and Ashton Winger taking wins. The B-Main went to Mark Whitener.
That set the field for the thirty-lap feature. Timm and Gustin started on the front row. Gustin jumped out front early. His only challenges came in the form of a couple restarts. Gustin collected $5,000 for the win.
Timm lost the second spot to Ashton Winger on lap five. Jake used the bottom groove late in the race to retake the spot. Winger held on to finish third. Last year’s winner Tyler Erb finished fourth. Dennis Erb Jr. drove from a sixth row starting spot to finish fifth.
Cole Stichter started the AVS Hydro Excavating IMCA SportMod main in the fourth spot, before taking the lead on lap eight. Once in front, Stichter would lead the rest of the way to the checkers.
After leading early, Dakota Cole held on to a second place finish. Pace Herrera took third over Tyler Maschman and Kevin Goben.
Blake Woodruff chalked up another Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock victory. By luck of the draw, Woodruff started on the pole and would lead all fifteen laps of the feature.
Donnie Louck was able to pass Chevy Andreatta for second. Jake Lund finished fourth followed by Jesse Owen.
Matt Fulton Sr. won the Midwest Jalopies feature. Jayson Blunt edged out Tanner Gerrard for second. Mike Hulsing and Jordan Sherwood rounded out the top five.
Matt Hirst powered his way to a win in the Nostalgia Stock Cars feature. Hirst passed early race leader Dan Kessler on lap four and led the rest of the way. Terry Mattly ran second to Hirst with Kessler third. Jeff Walker and Austin Honts were fourth and fifth respectively.
Despite a terrible weather forecast, the Davenport Speedway pushed through the entire Iowa Governor’s Cup racing program, finishing in a light sprinkle with distant lightning visible on the horizon.
Next up at Davenport Speedway will be the Sheet Metal Showdown, on Saturday, June 21st. The event features IMCA Late Models, IMCA SportMods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks, with each class paying $2,000-to-win. Also racing will be IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and 4-Cylinders.
