Cruz Birkhofer scores first Davenport win at Sheet Metal Showdown
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 21, 2025) – The Sheet Metal Showdown produced great racing action on a hot Saturday night at Davenport Speedway. The event was highlighted by 25-lap, $2,000-to-win features in the IMCA Late Models, IMCA SportMods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
Cruz Birkhofer scored his first late model feature win in the Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model main. Cruz started on the outside of the front row and never left the high side or the lead throughout the race. At the checkers, he held a half second advantage over second place Andy Nezworski.
Nezworski started fourth and had to pass Chase Brunscheen to get to second. Andy was able to get within a car-length of the leader, but not close enough to make a pass. Third place went to Logan Veloz, who started fifth. Evan Miller and Dustin Smith rounded out the top five.
Late model heat race wins went to Brian Harris and Nezworski.
Brayton Carter took the win in a dandy of an AVS Hydro Excavating IMCA SportMod feature. Josh Starr grabbed the early lead after starting on the front row. A lap twelve caution brought the field back to his rear bumper. On the restart, Dylan VanWyk put his car out front. Dylan would also lead eleven laps.
Carter started twelveth. He quickly moved into the top five. Carter then had to grind his way through the front runners. Brayton Carter took the lead on lap 23 and would only lead the final three laps.
VanWyk held on to second. Cole Suckow ran in the top five the entire race and secured a third place finish. Starr and Cole Stichter completed the top five.
Daniel Wauters dominated the Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Hobby Stock main. Wauters got out to the race lead early and held off a charging Kile Vohringer to take the win. Vohringer would finish second, Matt Bennett was third followed by Preston MacDonald and Randy LaMar.
Logan Veloz rocketed out to the win in Del’s Metal Co. & Midwest Recyclers IMCA Modified class. Logan led all twenty laps of the race, fending off the challenges from Kurt Kile and Chris Zogg. Zogg would finish second with eighth place starter Ben Chapman third. Charlie Mohr and Kurt Kile were fourth and fifth respectively.
The path may have been different, but the result was the same in the Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock main. Blake Woodruff made another trip to Competitive Concrete Victory Lane. The win was his eighth of the year at Davenport. Track promoter Jeff Struck was back behind the wheel of his racecar for this one. Struck led eleven of the first twelve laps before Woodruff would power by. Struck held on for second, with a late charge from Donnie Louck placing him third. Fourth went to Jake Lund with Landen Chrestensen fifth.
Dustin Forbes cleaned up in the Cantrell’s Towning/ Fred’s Towing/ QC Towing 4-Cylinder feature. Forbes swept the class, winning both the heat and feature. Josh Starr finished second followed by Caleb Giese.
With only five point races remaining, it’s back to weekly racing action at Davenport Speedway next Friday, June 27th. All five weekly classes will be in action as well as IMCA Mod Lites.
