First-timers abound at Davenport in July

| July 19, 2025

DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 18, 2025) – Davenport Speedway saw five first-time winners for the 2025 season on Friday night. That is an unusually large number for this time of year. The new winners will certainly shake-up the point standings, going into the final two point races in August.

Matt Ryan finally won his first IMCA Late Models – The Outhouse / Storage to Go feature of the season. It was a race that no one seemed able to win.

Jesse Bodin led the first lap of the race. Then Joe Beal jumped out to the lead and looked strong, but pulled off the track after five laps. Bodin led again for a lap or two, then Bryce Garnhart was next to lead. Garnhart led until lap fifteen, but mechanical issues would also sideline his ride. Bodin went back out in front again.
On lap twenty-two, Ryan finally reached the top of the scoreboard. He led the last four laps en route to the victory, his twenty-fifth late model win at Davenport.

Evan Miller worked his way to a second place finish. Bodin held on for third with Curtis Glover fourth.
Bodin, Glover and Logan Veloz won the late model heats.

Matt Werner took home the trophy in the Midwest Recyclers / Del’s Metal Co. IMCA Modifieds. Werner was another past track champion who had been winless at Davenport this season. Matt led all twenty laps of the main after starting on the outside pole.

Logan Veloz started seventh and quickly moved up to third where he stalled out behind Blaise Lewis. Veloz finally got the better of Lewis on lap eighteen and finishing in the runner-up spot. Lewis held to third with Shane Paris and Spencer Diercks rounding out the top five.

The modified feature went all twenty laps caution-free.

Another feature, another first-time winner, this time in the Koehler Electric Street Stocks. Cary Brown punched his way through to victory lane for the first time this year. Brown started the race in the front row. He built up a little bit of a lead over second place. By lap seven, Blake Woodruff would pass Donnie Louck for second. Woodruff slowly reeled in Brown.

On the final lap Woodruff made his move. The two drivers banged doors and other parts of their cars. At the checkered flag, Brown held a 0.047 second gap over Woodruff, for the win. Jesse Owen, Dustin Smith, and Donnie Louck completed the top five.

The IMCA SportMods – AVS Hydro Excavating feature kept the ball rolling with Keith Wiersema making his first-ever appearance in Davenport’s victory lane. In the final laps of their feature, Wiersema had to hold off Tony Olson for the win. Olson was scored in second with Kevin Goben, Levi Heath, and Brad Salisberry taking third through fifth in that order.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks, sponsored by Wangelin’s Auto was the lone exception of the evening. Daniel Wauters collected his fourth point-win of the season. Carson Butt was scored in second with Dan Klatt third.

Nolan Morrow captured his first Freds Towing / Cantrell Towing / QC Towing 4 Cylinder victory. Shawn Pappas took second over Jason Rhoads.

Unfortunately, it is now time for the Davenport Speedway to take the annual break for the Mississippi Valley Fair. Our next race will be Friday, August 8th. All five weekly classes will be racing along with IMCA Mod Lites. On what will be a busy night of racing, there will also be powder puff races and the fan vote for the Davenport Speedway Hall of Fame.
