Jake Morris scores first ever late model win at Davenport
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 6, 2025) – Jake Morris scored an impressive win Friday night at Davenport Speedway. Morris is a rookie in the Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model division this season. The victory was his first-ever in the late model class.
Jake started the feature in fourth and stayed near the front during the first half of the race. Then the caution flag flew on lap 16 for a three-car pile-up on the frontstretch.
On the restart, Morris was able to get around early race leader Chirs Lawrence and take over the top spot. In the final ten laps, Jake had to hold off a charging Matt Ryan for the win.
After starting tenth, Ryan would have to settle for second. Logan Veloz started 13th and vaulted to a third-place finish. Andy Nezworski and Evan Miller were fourth and fifth respectively.
Late Model heat race wins went to Chris Lawrence and Gary Webb.
Spencer Diercks chalked up win number four in the Del’s Metal Co. & Midwest Recyclers IMCA Modified feature. Not everyone was happy about it.
Spencer was locked in a tight battle with Brad Dierks for the lead. On lap eighteen, Spencer tried to go under Brad for the lead. Brad’s car went up over the edge of the racetrack, breaking his momentum and dropping him back several places. The race stayed green and Spencer Diercks was first to the checkers.
Mitch Way started on the pole and led a couple of early laps. He dropped back in the middle of the race and then rallied to finish second. Charlie Mohr drove from a seventh row starting spot to take third. Ben Chapman took fourth and Brad Dierks recovered to take fifth.
In the closest finish of the night, Rayce Mullen captured the win in the AVS Hydro Excavating IMCA SportMods. The fifteen lap race would see four different leaders. Finn Oppenheimer led the first three laps after starting on the pole. Trey Jacobs would grab the lead on lap four and lead through lap ten.
A restart on lap eleven allowed Levi Heath to show the way. On the following lap, Rayce Mullen would inch out in front. Mullen had to fend off two drivers in the final laps. Heath wasn’t going anywhere and then a late charge from Scott Walker put him into the mix.
At the checkers, it was Mullen by 0.033 seconds over Scott Walker in second. Heath finished third followed by Dakota Cole and Rance Powell.
Blake Woodruff continued his dominance of the Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock class. Blake racked up his fifth feature win of the season. Woodruff started the main in the last row and had taken the lead by the end of lap three. Donnie Louck started outside the fourth row and finished second. Andrew Burk, Jesse Owen, and Jake Lund were third through fifth, in that order.
Randy LaMar recorded win number three of the season in the Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Randy jumped out to the early lead and led the race flag to flag. Second went to Wisconsin’s Scott Wetter. Sheldon Hunter took third over Daniel Wauters and Carson Butt.
Joe Lafrenz took home the trophy in the Cantrell’s Towning/ Fred’s Towing/ QC Towing 4-Cylinders. The feature looked as if it would be a three-car battle between Lafrenz, Dustin Forbes and Shawn McDermott. By lap seven, the lead trio had been reduced to just Lafrenz. Jacob Welter finished a distant second. Jason Rhoads, Dustin Munn, and Nolan Morrow rounded out the top five.
Racing continues at Davenport Speedway, on Friday the 13th of June. All five weekly classes and IMCA Mod Lites will be on track. That event is followed by the Iowa Governor’s Cup on Tuesday, June 17th and the Sheet Metal Showdown on Saturday, June 21st.
