McDonald Bags Big Bucks With First Ever Win At CJ Speedway

| May 11, 2025

Columbus Junction, Iowa: It was Sal Vitale’s of Wapello race night at the CJ Speedway on Friday night and the weatherman cooperated with providing a beautiful night for racing at the CJ Speedway located on the Louisa County Fairgrounds in Columbus Junction.

The CJ Auto Parts/NAPA Stores IMCA Hobby Stocks raced for a top prize of $750 dollars on Friday night and the main event provided plenty of racing excitement with the winner determined at the finish line. Jason Schutterle took early command of the race and led for the majority of the event. As the laps wound down the lead pack swelled to four drivers racing for a shot at the bonus money.

The pack entered turn four on the final circuit and somehow young Preston McDonald was able to emerge from the pack and score the win by a bumper ahead of Schutterle with Kale Hemsley in third and Cory VanDerwilt in fourth with all four top finishers being separated by less than a car length. The dramatic win was the very first win ever for McDonald who has been a regular at CJ for the last couple of seasons.

The Stewart & Sons Fuel IMCA Modifieds provided an action packed 16 lap main event of Friday night with local hot shoe, Kurt Kile scoring his second win of the young season. Kile advanced to the front from his fourth row start to overtake early leader Danny Brau. Kile went on to hold off several challenges by Josh Foster in racing to the win. Troy Cordes made the long tow down to CJ from Dunkerton and raced up front all race long before settling for third.

The Mincer Ford Stock Car feature was decided on the white flag lap as race leaders Trenton Whitt and Keegan Wells raced for the lead entering turn two, the turn that provided a real challenge on Friday night bit both of the leaders as they entered on the high line and both slipped off the top side of the track. With the leaders bringing out the yellow after the white flag had been displayed the win was awarded to third running Kenny O’Donnell. In victory lane O’Donnell stated “ that is not the way I wanted to win but this win breaks a 22 year dry spell”. Jimmy Comins followed O’Donnell across the finish line in second ahead of Kirk Kinsley.

The Aupp Automotive IMCA Sportmods main event saw the “Lil Speedster”, Dylan VanWyk continue his mastery of the CJ Speedway with another win on Friday night. VanWyk raced to the front from his fourth row start and overtook early leader Dustin Griffiths in route to the feature win. Griffiths held on for second ahead of Tyler Heckart, who made a late race charge to finish third.

Friday, May 16th the CJ Speedway will be hosting a very special night of racing with the Sprint Cars returning to the CJ Speedway for the first time in 15 years. The Sprint Invaders will put their wild and woolly winged racing machines to the test as they ride the high banks of the CJ Speedway. In addition the four regular IMCA Sanctioned classes will also be in action. Hot laps will take to the track at 7 pm for what promises to be a great night of racing.
