Night of Destruction dazzles Davenport crowd

 

DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 6, 2025) – It was a crowd pleasing Night of Destruction at Davenport Speedway on Saturday. The grand finale of the evening was the Trailer Race. The competitors were bashing and crashing their way around the track until only three remained.
By the vote of the crowd, Tanner Gandia was declared the winner. Second went to Ray Daily Jr. and third to Wyatt Thompson. The best appearing entry award went to Rob Harding Jr.

The evening started out with four classes of Cheater Races, the Midwest Vintage Late Models and the debut of the Crown Vics.

The Outhouse / Storage to Go Late Models were few in number, but still managed to put on a show. The feature started with Chad Holladay busting out to an early lead. Late in the race Holladay started to slow and was passed by Doug Nigh. Nigh went on to claim the win, his first feature win at Davenport since 2012. Holladay finished second. Anthony Guss, Dave Hammond and Gary Webb rounded out the top five.

Midwest Recyclers / Del’s Metal Co. Modifieds wowed the crowd in their twenty-lap main with four lead changes and a last lap pass for the win. Bill Roberts Jr. jumped out to the early lead from the pole. Roberts would lead thee first eleven laps before Mark Schulte grabbed the top spot. Schulte led laps 12-15 when Brandon Durbin took the lead. Schulte fought back to take a slim advantage at the white flag, but Durbin was able to power around him once more to claim the victory.
Schulte finished second with Charlie Mohr having a solid run in third. Roberts was able to hold on for fourth, while Donovan Lodge came up to take fifth.

The Koehler Electric Street Stock feature had a familiar theme. A lot of hard-nosed racing with Blake Woodruff coming through the pack for the win. Chevy Andreatta held the early lead. Rob Henry worked his way to the front to lead lap six. After that it was all Blake Woodruff. Rob Henry held on for second with Cary Brown taking third. Jesse Owen recovered from a flat tire to finish fourth, followed by Joe Bonney in fifth.

The AVS Hydro Excavating SportMods came down to and exciting two car duel between Ryan Walker and David Engelkens. Walker took the early lead from the pole, while Engelkens had to pass some traffic. The pair were running one-two by lap six and would battle it out the rest of the way. Engelkens would get to Walker’s bumper several times but could not complete the pass.
Walker took the win, but at a price. He dropped a good amount of oil in victory lane. Engelkens finished second ahead of Dakota Cole. Scott Walker, and Kevin Goben in that order.

Austin Honts took the win in Midwest Vintage Late Models action. Jeff Walker was second with Terry Mattly third.

Saturday’s event also marked the first-ever appearance of Crown Vics at the Davenport Speedway. Jacob Welter finished at the front of the Ford brigade. Jordan Miles finished second. Rob Culbertson, Kyle Riedner, and David Culbertson completed the top five.

Next up at Davenport Speedway will be the 2nd annual Corn State Nationals. Thursday, September 11th, will be an open practice session (6:30-9:30pm). Friday, September 12th, the racing will feature the MARS Super Late Models going for a $5,000 top prize. In the finale on Saturday, September 13th, the MARS series drivers will compete for $10,000-to-win.
