MOBERLY, MO (June 2) - The National Flat Track Racing Association came to Moberly's 24 Raceway on Friday evening June 1. Special Thanks went to Mid-America Harley-Davidson of Columbia for their sponsorship in bringing this action to the high-banked oval. Riders (as they are called) represented eight states as they enjoyed this wonderful facility in Missouri. Ten classes of motorcycles had many men, boys, and 4 lady riders with ages ranging from 9 years to 62. All the races (heats and features) began from a standing start with the flagman right on the track. Mike Anderson, a rider with over 50 years experience in motorcycle racing, provided "protection" information. Basically the three necessities for the riders are a good full-face helmet, a steel-soled left shoe, and leathers with a hard plastic back protector. Classes that raced were Pro-Quads, Vintage 375cc and under, Pro-Unlimited Air-Cooled Singles, 85cc, Pro-Sports, 125cc - 400cc Amateur, Vintage Pro-Twins, Modern Open Amateurs, Modern Open Pros, and 600cc Pros. It was a very exciting evening, and many positive comments came from the crowd and sponsor on the evening, and from the riders on the facility! The one repeated the most often was "need more of this in central Missouri". Anyone interested in this organization may connect to their website www.NFTRA.com .

Saturday evening, June 2, Moberly's 24 Raceway once again provided its Weekly Racing Series and added the Classic Dwarfs and Mod-lites to its program. Interesting colored clouds as the sun tried to peek out, a beautiful rainbow, and a strange storm cloud that seemed to float just around to the north of the track, all provided for a very comfortable evening.

To celebrate his 50th birthday Bud Casey, owner of Bloomin' Idiots and Goofy Golf in Moberly, was honored to be the official driver of the pace car.

The 50/50 Drawing of $144 was collected by Robert Berry of Columbia.

Hartgrove Bulldozing of Clarence was the kind contributor of the bicycle and helmet this week. Young 7 yr. old Clark resident, Ryan Lewis, was the lucky winner.

Many sponsors provided prizes for the Jr. Fan Club and adults. The Raceway thanked Delano Oil, Burger King, Simpson Imports, Lee's Chicken, and several others.

RACE RESULTS:

V. WILSON PULLS OUT LAST LAP VICTORY OVER DELONJAY IN A-MODS; SMITH DE-THRONED IN B-MODS IN SOME EXCITING LEAD SWAPS WITH G. WILSON

HOBBY STOCK:

Alan Hultz (#51 Madison) and Clinton "Pinkie" Dale (#11PW Moberly) entertained the crowd on the last few laps with a "cat and mouse" chase. After leading the entire race, Hultz was overtaken on the last lap. How exciting! Tom Creed was close but accepted 3rd place followed in 4th by Darrell Nickerson ( #32 Moberly). Clayton Crump (#3c Centralia) rounded out the 5th spot.

HORNETS:

After several disqualifications for suspension alterations, the race results were not as they appeared. Twenty-four cars started the race which was rather uneventful until about the 3rd to last lap when a caution came out for a front stretch crash. Robert Winfrey (#37 Moberly) was finally crowned the winner and Steven Delonjay (#35 Quincy, Il) grabbed 2nd. Justin Morgan (#24-7 Lentner) maintained his 3rd place. Galen Hassler (#25 Columbia) inherited the 4th place position and was followed by Richard Doctorian (#36 Smithville).

DWARFS AND MOD-LITES:

The Fulton driver, 14 year old Blake David, jumped out into the lead and dominated the race in his Mod-lite #11. Mike Raffurty (#641) cruised into 2nd and Mark David (#76 Mexico) motored into 3rd. Jeff Raffurty (#98 Lee's Summit) provided a challenge for a while with Mike Raffurty who later fell back. Good job.

MOBERLY MOTORS B-MODIFIEDS:

Another good close race!!! The reigning king of 5 wins in a row, Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) was dethroned by Gary R. Wilson (#11 Holliday) who together made bold moves back and forth to search for the checkered flag. Wilson stated that it was a 'good win' and certainly didn't want to see the caution flag that came out toward the end. Also making switches with the top contenders was Brad Pfeiffer (#32 Columbia) who settled into 3rd followed by Kevin Embree (#61 Paris) in 4th. Tony Garner (#20 Macon) also had a good run to finish in 5th.

MFA OIL / BREAK TIME SPORTSMAN:

Jeff Creed (#01Cairo) took the lead early on and maintained that lead to capture the checkered flag. It was a great competition between the next four cars as they challenged each other closely. Chad Walter (#23 Clarence), Tim Eravi (#3 Moberly), Ryan Petersheim (#6 Sturgeon), and Charlie Rindom (#42 Moberly) finished 2nd through 5th as written,
giving heavy pressure to each other. Great race! Creed stated that he needs to "keep from making mistakes" in order to score more first positions.

A-MODIFIEDS:

Vance Wilson (#1v Frankford) skillfully overtook the race front runner on the last lap out of turn four and earned his 3rd-in-a-row win. Hank Delonjay (#35 Quincy, Il) worked hard to hold his 1st place spot throughout the race, but after a yellow caused a Green, White, Checker finish, it was all Wilson needed to push Delonjay back into 2nd. Good race! Mark VanWinkle (24v Hannibal) joined the leaders and settled into 3rd. Kelly Smith (#41 Kirksville) and David Holder (#4G Clarence) cleared the 4th and 5th spots. Good battles throughout.

June 9: The Dukes of Hazzard may be off the prime time TV air waves, but Randolph County's version of Uncle Jesse, Daisy, Luke & Bo Duke will be coming to Moberly's 24 Raceway next weekend, June 9 between the heat racing and the features. Come watch the Dukes being pursued (still) by the likes of Sherriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss Hogg once more, only this time on a real racetrack (and probably thru the infield too). The General Lee will be there, along with Daisy's Jeep, Uncle Jesse's Pickup and Rosco's Police Car, all courtesy of Larry Prather's recreations out of his Cairo, MO shop, and just about 6 miles north of the racetrack. Be sure to bring the family out for this one.

And oh, yeah, there will ALSO be some exciting stock car racing with the five regular classes of A-Modifieds, Moberly Motors B-Modifieds, the MFA Oil / Breaktime Sportsman class, Hobby Stocks and 4 cly. Hornets for most of the evening. Admission is $10 to the grandstand for adults, with kids, ages 6 to 12, at $5 to see the five regular classes AND the "Dukefest". Rates for the Family Pass are $25, and that includes admission to the grandstands for 2 adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are always free. The grandstands will open at 4 p.m. Passes into the pit area cost $22. Hot laps start at 6:15 following a short drivers' meeting. "Dirt Track Racing at its Best" (and some Duke family shenanigans, too) will take place again starting at 7pm at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly, Missouri on U.S. Highway 24. Action photos from 24 Raceway can be seen at www.24racewayinmoberly.com  , if you simply click on the forum and chose the heading.
