MOBERLY, MO (July 5) - Celebrations for Independence Day are enjoyed by
Americans in many different ways. Moberly's 24 Raceway provided a July 3rd
'Special' evening of superb racing entertainment on the high-banked dirt oval. L
& J Development of Moberly presented the 3rd Annual Oscar White Memorial
Firecracker Forty. A 40-lap feature offered the field of 56 A-Modifieds the
opportunity to capture a $1000 prize. The 'Best in the Midwest' O'Reilly MLRA
Super Late Models also appeared in the Rumble Tour which starred 36 full-bodied
machines in the chase to pocket the $3000 top dollar. Plus, 28 'cars and stars'
in the Hornet division pursued the victory lane spot.

RACE RESULTS:
OSCAR WHITE MEMORIAL FIRECRACKER FORTY:
This special A-Mod race had a somewhat different format of racing to determine
the line-up for the 24 car Main Feature. The winners of the 6 Heat races had a
6-lap Shootout to set up the first 3 rows. The 2nd place Heat finishers filled
the 4th-6th rows. Then 3 Consy races (A,B,C) transferred the top 4 places to
complete the A-Main field. There was a lot of action in the first 13 laps as
Michael Long (#18 Quincy, IL) pulled away from the field, but unfortunately
after a caution, Long had to retire to the pits with a broken right front tie
rod. To continue the race, Henry 'Hank the Crank' Delonjay (#35 Quincy, IL)
charged on and eventually took home the big bucks. Following in 2nd was
hard-charger Steve Picou (#Ox High Ridge) who held off a strong field of
competitors. After negotiating traffic from a 17th starting position, Curt
Potter (#11P Boonville) swept into the 3rd top spot. Gary Blackburn, Jr. (#26
Fulton) had an impressive performance holding off a big group of racers to
finish 4th. Vance Wilson (#1v Frankford) succeeded in earning the 5th position -
his starting place - but only after he'd made some advances and then getting
passed at the end. To finish out the top 6 was Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia)
who, after starting 15th, tightened up his race for a good show. Delonjay said
he was retiring after this year and will probaqbly turn his car over to his son.
Picou said he 'had a good car' but his 'motor didn't run right at the end'. He
thought 'it was a fun track' but wishes it was 'closer to home'. Potter said
that he started 'far back' and that he 'went as far as we are going to get'.
This was an exciting, fast display of good racing for 40 laps.
O'REILLY MLRA SUPER LATE MODELS:
A good field of 36 Late Models completed 4 Heat races and a huge 40-lap Feature
that began with a 4-wide salute to the fans. A few cautions caused brief delays
just to get the show started, but when the green dropped Tommy Elston (#45
Keokuk, IA) zipped into the lead and was basically unchallenged throughout the
entire race. After a caution with 5 laps to go, Elston once again took off like
'greased lightning' to accept the checkered flag. He dedicated his win to a
friend who died a year ago and whose wife a week later delivered a baby. Toward
the end of the race Denny Eckrich (#50E Tiffin, IA) battled to pass front
runners and racked up the 2nd place. He just passed Mark Voigt (#30 Marine, IL)
who finished 3rd and Chris Simpson (#32S Oxford, IA) who grabbed 4th. The Lucky
Stars Reward was presented by Stan Smith (Midwest Walnut) to the driver who
finished somewhere behind the 11th position. The 'Draw' this time was for the
17th spot earned by Larry Clawson (#L88 N.Kansas City) who picked up a deserved
$1000! Super entertainment!
HORNETS:
Rob Chase (#3 Clark) drove into victory lane ahead of Rich Moret (#02 Cairo) and
Brooke Hassler (#21 Columbia) who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Because of
a disqualification of Moret, Hassler then accepted 2nd position and climbing to
3rd was Devin Still (#73 Anabel). There were several close battles throughout
this 25 -lap race and was an exciting show to start out the evening's racing.
