THE KIRKSVILLE KOMET, KELLY SMITH, PULLS OFF RACING'S VERSION
OF THE DAILY DOUBLE IN TAKING BOTH THE A-MOD & B-MOD RACES
Report by Pam Hassler & repeated promo by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO.

MOBERLY, MO (July 30) - The beautiful full moon was crisp and clear covered
by an occasional haze on Saturday night, July 28 at 24 Raceway in Moberly. It
tried to play its superstitious 'tricks' especially in the Hornet class (see
report) but did not overshadow all the super race competitions and the great
victories of the night. And what a night for both the modified teams of Kelly
Smith's, in heats and features, along with his B-mod getting the Mechanic's Race
win! Eighty-one race teams entertained race fans who cheered the winners and
supported their favorite drivers. The races concluded around 10 pm which allowed
many fans to come to the pits for autographs and give congratulations. A
practice ssession followed about an hour later, for those that had signed on,
and will likely take place again next weekend on Aug. 4.

RACE RESULTS:
HORNETS:
Husband and wife race team of Rob (#3) and Kristi (#33) Chase of Clark earned
the front row feature positions by winning their respective heat races. On the
first lap, their leads came to an abrupt end on the backstretch after squeezing
the wall which resulted in both cars rolling over. Fortunately Rob and Kristi
were uninjured, but their race cars had extensive damage. On the restart,
another red flag came out for visiting driver Matt Bowen (#51 Fulton) who also
took a roll out of turn 2. He was okay but his car could not continue. Also
involved was Travis Redburn (#44x Moberly-track pit announcer) who was shook up
but fine - unlike his car's front end damage. When the race resumed with no
other cautions, point leader Chad Hickam (#9H Hallsville) traveled on into
victory lane. For several laps a battle ensued between Rich Moret (#02 Cairo)
who eventually earned the runner-up spot and Brooke Hassler (#21 Columbia) who
followed in 3rd. Charging up from mid-pack to finish in impressive 4th and 5th
positions were Robert Winfrey (#37 Moberly) and Lowell Smith (#03 Bucklin). Good
racing!
HOBBY STOCKS:
Although there were only 10 cars in this 12-lap competition, what a race it was
throughout for the duel between Tim Dawson (#28 Callao) and Kevin Renzelmann
(#41 Huntsville). After lap after lap of trading places, Renzelmann notched his
2nd win in a row as he just nipped the line ahead of Dawson by a bumber. Dawson
thought he had him but accepted the 2nd spot and thanked his dad "who helps me
the most". The performance for the 3rd and 4th positions was also a great race
as Tom Elsen (#11 Clarence) held off Clinton 'Pinkie' Dale (#7 Moberly). Topping
off the top 5 was Tom Creed (#17 Moberly).
MOBERLY MOTORS B-MODS:
Setting sail out in front of this 15-lap race and charging on to victory lane
was Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville). He had Wyatt Lantz (#22 Bowen, IL) on his tail
for 11 laps until an unfortunate spin out of turn 1 caused Lantz to start again
at the rear of the field. Bob Woodrow (#3 Hannibal) once again this week
challenged Smith after sweeping past the entire field in just one lap from his
starting position at the rear. Tony Garner (#20 Macon) powered past the line in
3rd just ahead of 4th place finisher Craig Spegal (#7s New London) followed by
Gary Wilson (#11 Holliday) in 5th. Smith seemed out of breath from a hard run as
he complimented Woodrow for driving a 'heck of a race'.
MFA OIL / BREAKTIME SPORTSMAN:
Several 2-way pursuits allowed for scrambles throughout the race. Jeff Creed
(#01 Cairo) accepted another victory after he battled with and held off fierce
contender Pete Agee (#14 Huntsville). Charging behind them was the point leader
Larry Krog (#6K Clarence) who snagged 3rd followed by Ryan Petersheim (#6
Sturgeon) in 4th. Another pair in 5th and 6th was Chad Walter (#23 Clarence) who
lead a close chase with Tim Eravi (#3 Moberly). Creed said it was a "good night
for us' but a 'bad night for the Hornets'. Creed helped repair several Hornets
this past week. He was pleased with his win as 'there are really fast cars this
year' and he 'likes it better this way - more fun'.
A-MODS:
In a field of 21 fast cars, the competitions 'wowed' the crowd. It looked as
though Matt Dotson (#88D Sturgeon) had the advantage as he led the field for
half of the laps until Kelly Smith (#41 Kirksville) edged him out to collect his
2nd feature win of the evening. Smith stated that it was an 'awesome night'!
"Hot Dog!" he said of his 'perfect night'. He was 'so glad' because it was his
first A-Mod win this season. Dotson had a great run though as he accepted 2nd
ahead of David Holder (#7x Clarence) who grabbed 3rd while holding off Vance
Wilson (#66 Frankford) in 4th. Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia) competed well with
Brandon Lennox (#22c New London) and finished 5th and 6th respectively. Great
race!
B-MOD MECHANIC'S RACE:
It was a super night for the Kelly Smith #82 race car as Dental Williams of
Kirksville powered this feature's winning car into another victory lane. Brian
Robinson of Moberly drove the #10 Steve Robinson car into the runner-up spot.
Good job for the mechanics who enjoyed a different perspective from the driver's
seat. Fun race!
