TAKING THE $2007 TOP PRIZE IN THE 40 LAP A-MODIFIED RACE AT
THIS YEAR'S SPEEDBOWL, IT'S DONNELLSON, IOWA'S TONY FRAISE. AND FOR THREE OF THE
OTHER SPEEDBOWL CLASSES, IT WAS GOOD TO HAVE A "3" AS THE CAR NUMBER.
by: Report by Pamela Hassler & repeated promo by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway,
Moberly, MO.
MOBERLY, MO (Sept 4) - SPEEDBOWL 2007! What a weekend! Two nights of speed
and action on Saturday and Sunday, September 1 & 2 entertained fans at Moberly’s
24 Raceway. A big thanks goes to Aaron’s Sales and Leasing of Moberly for their
sponsorship of this big race that offered a whopping $2007 to win the A-Modified
Division feature. All the other classes enjoyed added dollars to their purse as
well. On Saturday night Pig in a Polka (meat rub seasoning) of Hallsville became
the contributor of $100 and a jar of the seasoning to the winner of the 6 lap, 6
car Dashes in each class, with the finish determining the first three row
starting positions for the Sunday night features. The Heat and Dashes on
Saturday were fun and the Last Chance races and Features on Sunday were exciting
to say the least!

Qualifying and Dash races
The night consisted of Heat races for each class and concluded with 6-lap Dashes
and a B-Feature for the A-Mods. Before each Dash, the 6 cars and drivers were
brought onto the track for introductions and drivers picked up a Frisbee with a
position number. The Frisbee was then signed and thrown into the stands (At
least most of them made it over the fence!)
4 Cyl. HORNETS:
Heat Race 1 - Kristi Chase (#33 Clark) dominated the race, followed by John
Brown (#01 Huntsville) and Jerry Warren (#04 Moberly) with no position changes
although there were some close challenges for the lead.
Heat Race 2 – Rob Chase (#3 Clark) gave a battle to finally take the lead over
Steven Delonjay (#35 Quincy,IL). Delonjay held a good line until the last lap.
Joe Evans (K-2X Jacksonville) raced into 3rd.
DASH: Kristi Chase (#33 Clark) once again led the field of ‘fellas’ and earned
the pole position for the feature on Sunday. Side by side action resulted in
John Brown (#01 Huntsville) taking the second place in front of Steven Delonjay
(#35 Quincy, IL). On the last lap Rob Chase (#3) had a crunch into the wall
along with Jerry Warren (#04).
HOBBY STOCKS:
Heat Race (only 1) – A three car pursuit occurred throughout the race with Jeff
Hamlin (#87 Edina) passing late in the race to take the victory over competitors
Mark Forrester (#10 Columbia) in 2nd and Clayton Crump (#3C Centralia) in 3rd.
DASH: Once again Jeff Hamlin (#87 Edina) was victorious and earned the pole
position for the feature on Sunday. He was given chase by 2nd place finisher
Clayton Crump (#3C Centralia) and Nathan Stevenson (#57 Huntsville) in 3rd. Mark
Forrester (#10 Columbia) was in the mix of the top three until losing a ball
joint. Hamlin stated that he appreciated everyone showing up and when asked
about starting on the pole position he said he’d have to “Wait and see –
anything can happen.”
Moberly Motors B-MODIFIEDS:
Heat Race 1 – Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) fought for the lead over close
challenger Gary Wilson (#11 Holliday). Jeff Waterman (#71 Quincy, IL) who led
earlier dropped back to finish 3rd.
Heat Race 2 – Bob Woodrow (#3 Hannibal) was again a champion by holding a big
lead through to the checkered flag followed by Wyatt Lantz (#22 Bowen, IL) and
Steve Casey (#25 Kirksville).
DASH: Bob Woodrow (#3 Hannibal) charged into the lead and again was victorious
and earned the pole position for the feature on Sunday. Wyatt Lantz (#22 Bowen,
IL) followed in 2nd with Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) taking 3rd.
MFA Oil / Breaktime SPORTSMAN:
Heat Race 1 – Rick Girard (#00 Columbia) had a good lead until a blown engine
took him from the win. Clinton Dale (#7X Moberly) then took the lead but also
broke and allowed Alan Bergfield (#73 Harrisburg) to accept the victory followed
by Andrew Page (#24A Columbia) in 2nd and Larry Perkins (#46 Clark) in 3rd.
Heat Race 2 – Ryan Petersheim (#6 Sturgeon) took a big lead over Jeff Creed (#01
Cairo) and Tim Eravi (#3 Moberly). The spread was not as wide at the end of the
race as these three finished 1, 2, 3 respectively.
DASH: Ryan Petersheim (#6 Sturgeon) was really hooked up and accepted the
victory and the pole position for the feature on Sunday. The finish was the same
as the 2nd heat race with Creed in 2nd and Eravi in 3rd. Petersheim said that
this was a “fast track” and “fun to drive on”. He thanked his dad for letting
him race. He said he’s going to “like it a lot to start on the pole”.
A-MODIFIEDS:
The top 2 finishers from the 3 Heats qualified for the Dash who then earned
their first three row positions in the Feature. The 3rd and 4th place Heat
finishers qualified for the Feature in the 4th – 6th rows.
Heat Race 1 - Henry “Hank the Crank” Delonjay (#35 Quincy, IL) lead the majority
of the race but lost it on the last lap to Tony Fraise (#45 Donnellson, IA).
Following in 3rd was Mike Chasteen (#C40 Creve Coeur, IL) and 4th was David
Holder (#71 Clarence).
Heat Race 2 – Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia) enjoyed the lead until near the end
when Vance Wilson (#66 Frankford) raced past Roberts to earn the win. Roberts
was 2nd, and 3rd was Jamie Ragland (#15R Lebanon) followed in 4th by Steve
Roberts (#2S Ashland).
Heat Race 3 – Michael Long (#18 Quincy, IL) charged into the lead for the win
followed by Kenny Mudd (#07 Winfield) in 2nd, Bill Baker (#03 Hannibal) in 3rd,

position for the feature on Sunday. Kenny Mudd (#07 Winfield) earned the 2nd
spot followed in 3rd by Henry Delonjay (#35 Quincy, IL). Vance Wilson (#66
Frankford), Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia), and Tony Fraise (#45 Donnellson, IA)
were 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. Long said he was “glad to be on the front
row”.

on Sunday. Gary Blackburn (#26 Fulton), Matt Dotson (#88D Sturgeon), Todd Bates
(#49X Canton, IL), and Casey Pearson (#377 Foley) completed the top 16
positions.

SPEEDBOWL FEATURES
4 Cyl. HORNETS:
Kristi Chase (#33 Clark) started on the pole of the 20 lap race but out of turn
2 on the first last dropped back quickly and pulled in due to electrical
problems. John Brown (#01 Huntsville) and Rob Chase (#3 Clark) had a good
competitive race for the first half. Joe Evans (#K-2X Jacksonville) was also
staying close. Chad Hickam was coming up from the back of the pack to the 3rd
spot until on a caution he lost the right rear wheel which took him out of the
competition. Also charging up through the field was Brooke Hassler (#21
Columbia). A battle was between Steven Delonjay (#35 Quincy, IL) and Galen
Hassler (#25 Hallsville) who had also raced up from the last position. Coming
around turn 4 for the checkered flag, an tremendous unfortunate tangle caused a
4-car crash with G. Hassler (#25) and Evans (#K-2X) hitting squarely into the
wall and Hassler rolling his car and having a “bonfire” in his engine. Both
Hassler and Evans were taken to the hospital and were released with minor
concussions and very sore bodies. The retaining wall was hit hard and because
the concrete was broken, repairs had to be made to reinforce it for the next
race. Brown (#01) and John Doctorian (#2 Wentzville) were both involved and
fortunately were not hurt. Passing on through to the victory lane and unaware of
the accident were Rob Chase (#3) accepting the 1st prize, followed by Brooke
Hassler (#21) taking 2nd, and Steven Delonjay (#35) who narrowly missed the
wreck.
HOBBY STOCKS:
A smooth start for ten cars in the 20 lap race had 3 cars racing for the lead,
but on the 12th lap a caution came out for Nathan Stevenson (#57Huntsville) who
hit the wall. Clayton Crump (#3C Centralia) went on and enjoyed a good win for
the extra bucks. He was followed in 2nd by Mike Wolfe (#11W Madison) who started
near the rear of the field. Coming in 3rd was Kevin Renzelmann (#41 Hunstville)
who had started from the last row and made good moves to get to the front.
Moberly Motors B-MODIFIEDS:
Bob Woodrow (#3 Quincy, IL) and Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) took an early lead
for this 30 lap race but on the first lap coming out of turn 2 an accident
involving 3 or 4 race cars caused another lengthy delay. Dave Kinder’s (#40
Moberly) right front tire ended up in the driver’s compartment of Steve Casey
(#25 Kirksville). A couple more restarts resulted in more cautions for Dustin
Boling (#36 Lentner) spinning, then on the next restart he hit the wall followed
by Josh Calvert (#82J Hallsville) spinning right behind. On lap 12 Dylan Hoover
(#2H Mexico) spun out on the front stretch. Kelly Smith gained the 2nd position
after he passed Wyatt Lantz (#22 Bowen, IL), but had to retire to the pits on
the next lap. Then the battle was between Lantz (#22) and Gary Wilson (#11
Holliday) for the 2nd and 3rd place and finished in those positions behind the
big leader.
***Three became the number to have as these first three feature races were won
by a car with a number 3 on it.*** WOW!
MFA Oil / Breaktime SPORTSMAN:
Several places were traded in this 25 lap race. Jeff Creed (#01 Cairo) took the
lead over Ryan Petersheim (#6 Sturgeon) with Rick Girard (#00 Columbia – in a
replacement car) in 3rd. Derrick Agee (#14JR Huntsville) had a spin on the
restart. Petersheim (#6) took the lead on lap 9. Petersheim and Creed traded
places for the lead, as did the positioning for 3rd between Girard and Pete Agee
(#14 Huntsville) who had raced hard from back in the pack for 3rd and 4th place.
Petersheim (#6) hung on to take the victory. Girard (#00) hung on to earn the
2nd place over P. Agee (#14) in 3rd. Creed (#01) had slipped back into 5th
behind Randy Rindom (#42x) who also had started near the rear of the field.
A-MODIFIEDS:
This big 40-lap Aaron’s Sales and Leasing feature started 23 cars (4 more were
N/S) on a very blackened dry slick track. Michael Long (#18 Quincy, IL) had a
rough time after earning the pole position when he had to come to the pits a
couple of times and finally retired from the race. Tony Fraise (#40 Donnellson,
IA) enjoyed taking over the lead on lap 5 and eventually drove into victory
lane. Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia) was in the second position early in the race
but a flat tire caused him to go to the pits for a change and then had to
restart at the rear. He worked through the pack to finally take the 4th spot.
Many super competitions developed throughout the race! Gary Blackburn (#26
Fulton) started in the middle of the field at 13th, after winning the consy race
to qualify on Saturday, and kept working through to earn the 2nd place.
Incidentally, in that consy race on Saturday, Mike McCarty (#4G Moberly) wound
up upside down in turn 2 for the first time in his last 15 years of racing and
did not make the field. David Holder (#71 Clarence) maintained a good position
even after he dropped back somewhat and then raced back up to finish 3rd. Also
starting mid-way and charging all the way into 5th place was Matt Dotson (#88D
Sturgeon). Fraise picked up the top dollar prize of a nice $2007 in this year's
SpeedBowl!
