HOLDER EXTENDS HIS HIS LOCK ON THE A-MOD SEASON POINTS, WHILE MARTIN LEADS 'EM ALL IN THE SPRINT RACE AT 24 RACEWAY

by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (July 19) - The Winged Outlaw Warriors and a smooth dry-slick track really entertained the crowd for the 2nd version of the Bob Whitehead Memorial at 24 Raceway this past Saturday, all of which was sponsored by Best Western Moberly Inn. Whitehead was the builder and primary owner of 24 Raceway, formerly called Moberly Motorsports Complex, in 1989. It was his dream to have a speedway in Mid-Missouri. The track began as a 1/3 mile oval construction project in 1988, but was gradually developed into the half mile track that it is today and built with high banking to accomodate sprint cars. Bob's son Jeff Whitehead and daughter Jill Creed, and other family members came to the track for a reunion of sorts to commerate the memory of the builder of 24 Raceway's facility. The visible racing member of the Whitehead family, grandson Jordan, came in with his A-modified and used it for the memorial parade lap carrying the American Flag during the National Anthem. Jordon brought his #8W in from the Wichita area and drove it to a solid 4th place finish in his race. And just like the previous week, the racecars used all of the track surface to get around this half-mile dirt track. Next season will be the 20th year since completion of the facility and the family reunion promises to be a part of that anniversary.

The W.O.W. sprint race saw Randy Martin get his first win in almost two seasons as he won his heat race and then led all 20 laps in this one. The 2nd, Jonathon Cornell, and 3rd, John Corbin, finishers got close as Martin raced into the lapped traffic, but he maintained his lead even after a close call from running over a rear tire of one of the lapped cars.

In the A-modifieds, David Holder backed up his win in last week's Firecracker Forty with his win #8 of the 2008 season. Brandon Lennox and Holder started strong from the front row and raced the first four laps that way, with Holder out ahead. By lap 5, though, Holder was on the move until getting into lapped traffic by lap 8. A lap 16 restart saw Holder once more move out with a considerable lead. Lennox stayed in 2nd the entire race, and finshed ahead of Matt Dotson, with Jordan Whitehead coming in at the 4th position.

Holliday's Gary R. Wilson led the first lap of the Moberly Motors B-modified race, but with an early caution, both Blake David and Mark Forrester got past him in turn 2. From there, it was a battle for 2nd between Wilson, Forrester and Steve Robinson until a lap 6 caution tightened up the field. After two restarts, it was Wilson coming to the front over David, and Forrester going high as Robinson went low in their battle for 3rd. By lap 10, Wilson had quite the lead over David, as these two finished in that order. Forrester won out over Robinson for the 3rd place finish. Wilson got his 5th win in a row and 6th of the season, and thanked the Lord, the fans and those in military service around the globe.

The MFA / Break Time Sportsman season points leader, Clinton Dale of Moberly, also got his 5th win in a row and 6th of the season as both Randy Rindom and Jeff Creed made it look as if a different car was going to make it to victory lane this night. Rindom looked tough as Creed race high and Dale ran the low lane for the first 5 laps. But Dale came on to the front on lap 7 and stayed there to get the win in front of the biggest cheers of the evening. Tim Eravi came on strong on lap 7 also and finished in 3rd just behind Creed.

And both the Hobby Stocks and 4 cylinder Hornet classes each ran a caution-free 12 lap race. Tom Creed led the first 8 laps in the Hobbys, until Kevin Renzelmann took over crossing the line ahead of Creed for the last four. These two had an exciting neck and neck race the entire way, as did both Chase Breid and Clayton Crump in their own battle for 3rd. Breid won that one and finished with 3rd place as Marvin Kinyon got around Crump for 4th at the line.

Kristi Chase won her 4 cylinder Hornet heat race and led the first lap over her husband, Rob, on the only close lap of the race. After that, her car was on a mission by leading all the other laps, with Robert Winfrey, Brooke Hassler and Rob Chase running as a pack and back a ways. R. Chase and Hassler were doing their share of rubbing with each other in the fight for 3rd, but finished in that order. In her 2nd career win in as many seasons, Kristi Chase thanked each and every one of her sponsors.

Thanks go out to Bloomin' Idiots, Proctor & Gamble and other sponsors for providing of the kid's fan club giveaways, as well as Best Western Moberly Inn for being the sponsor of the Bob Whitehead Memorial race. Thanks again to Rhonda Acton and Tammy Evans for taking on and organizing of the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club. Robert Roue of St. Charles won the 50/50 pot of $157. The 24 Raceway bicycle winner for the night was 5 year-old Zacaten Lohman of Excelsior Springs. Her older brother was the bike winner for this Whitehead Memorial race just last year. And yet another big winner came from the catch of the frisbee sent into the stands prior to the Sprint Car race. Each of the drivers signed and sent their frisbee into the crowd. Andrea Dennis of Meadville got the one with the #14 on it and won a crisp $100 bill, courtesy of the Winged Outlaw Warriors and from Randy Martin's winning the race.

Promo: Along with this week's race progan, the Moberly Motors B-modifieds will have a mechanic's race following the night's racing program. Like the two preceeding mechanics' races, an added activity will take place during the race: on one of the laps, the mechanic will pit on the front stretch and a tire change will be mandatory. The regular B-mod drivers will now be taking their turn at being the tire changers on these B-mods. More details to be discussed with the entrants following the driver's meeting at 6pm this Saturday night.
