SPEEDBOWL 2008 SEES HOLDER WIN THE $2008 AT 24 RACEWAY

by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (August 30) - The A-modified 2008 track champion at 24 Raceway once again showed that he knows the way to be the 1st to the finish line! Heat winner Tony Fraise, from Donnellson, Iowa led the first 3 laps and then held onto 2nd place for the remainder of the 35-lap event. Quincy's Michael Long, the 2nd heat winner, started from the outside front row position and together with Fraise, pulled away from the other 18 cars for the first 3 laps with Fraise in the lead from his pole position start. On the 4th lap, Long got by Fraise on the back stretch and led until the 18th lap, when a blown right rear tire in turn 1 took his red racecar directly into the wall with a hard hit. A couple of laps earlier, Holder had cut down the gap between 2nd and 3rd and was hot on Fraise's tail. Up until then, it looked like Long's Ford was the car to beat in this 35 lap race. With Long ok, out of the car and also out of the race, the restart on lap 19 saw Holder get around Fraise immediately in turn 2. After this, Holder never looked back and won the Big SpeedBowl prize of $2008. Fraise stayed in a solid 2nd position and challenged Holder on the last 10 laps, but didn't get in position to pass. Aaron Poe came to Moberly for his first visit from Warrensburg to finish in 3rd, following close behind Fraise for the final 10 laps. Sturgeon's Matt Dotson and Boonville's Steve Potter completed the top five.

In other racing, Gary Wilson secured the the Moberly Motors B-modified Championship for 2008 by 106 points over Blake David with his 2nd place finish in the night's double points race. Wilson led the first 13 laps over David, but it was the yound David's night to win as he got around Wilson on the backstretch of lap 13 only to have Wilson lead at the line. David led lap 14 and the last one of this 15-lap event. Wilson provided a heck of a challange coming out of turn 4 on the final lap, but couldn't quite pull off the feat in this caution-free race. David finished out the season points racing with his win no. 6 and 4th in a row!

The MFA / Break Time Sportsman season points leader, Clinton Dale of Moberly, did not have as good of a night as the throttle linkage fell apart on lap 6. Until then, Dale led Chad Walter and Randy Rindom in a 1-2-3 pull away from the rest of the pack for those 6 laps. After Dale left the track at the beginning of a restart, a heck of a wreck took place on the backstretch when Ryan Petersheim slowed up near the top of the track but got cobbered by Rick Girard when the rest of the pack left him nowhere to go. Both drivers were uninjured but will be a bit sore for the week. When racing resumed for lap 7, Walter went on to his 2nd win in 3 starts, followed close by Rindom with Derrick Agee coming in 3rd. Moberly's Dale did have enough points to win the championship by a mere 26 over Rindom.

Kevin Renzelmann got his win no. 4 of the 2008 season in the Hobby Stock class, and first since a month ago when he won three straight. Tim Dawson led the first lap, but then followed Renzelmann to the finish line for 2nd, with Clayton Crump holding onto 3rd. Tom Creed of Moberly came in 4th and won his first season points championship by 76 over Crump.

In the 4 cylinder Hornet race, Robert Winfrey ran the first 3 laps behind or alongside Brooke Hassler. Then on lap 4, Winfrey pulled off a pass from crossovers inside to outside on the frontstretch, but Hassler gave it a tough race for most of the remainder. Winfrey finally took control on the white flag lap and won the cat and mouse race with Hassler coming in 2nd. In the middle of the race, a red flag came out after lap 6. Cody Melloway provided a big scare from a crash and roll over of his car in turn 4 as a result from mixing it up in some close 3-wide racing. Melloway walked away, but will likely also be a little sore for the week from this exciting one. Hornet points leader Rob Chase did not have a very good night, but did have enough to win the 2008 points championship by 32 over Winfrey.

Thanks go out to all the sponsors for providing of the kid's fan club giveaways. Thanks again to Rhonda Acton for organizing of the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club. Debbie Milnes of Moberly won the 50/50 pot of $85.

Sept 20 - 360 Fall Classic w/ Winged Outlaw Warriors' 360 cubic inch Sprints, 360 cubic inch Moberly Motors B-modifieds and 360 cubic inch Hobby Stocks

PROMO: This coming week September 6th at 24 Raceway, MHC Kenworth of Columbia will be sponsoring the 6th annual Moberly Motors B-modified Championship Shootout with it's custom format of 30 laps in two segments. At least one new 2009 Kenworth T 660 over-the-road tractor will be on the grounds for some up-close viewing, and perhaps another new Kenworth road tractor or dump truck will be on hand too. The sales staff at MHC Kenworth will be around early enough to answer any questions prospective buyers might pose. Look for the tent in the parking lot area at the track's entrance to the grandstands.

The first segment of the race will be a 20-lap event with the top ten qualifying to move on. A ten minute pit stop for fuel and adjustments to that group of drivers placing one through ten will preceed a redraw for their starting positions. The second segment of the B-modified race will see those ten qualifying drivers then going full tilt for another ten laps. It's 10 laps, 10 B-mod racecars & $1000 to the winner! Join in watching these B-mods light up the track this coming Saturday night!

And the annual fall Moberly car show, this year known as the K & W car show, will take place this coming Friday night, Sept. 5th beginning at 4pm. Radio station KZZT 105.5fm will have a remote set up during the show, located in the southern part of Moberly on the west side of Morley (Business 63) opposite the National Guard Amory grounds. Prizes to be awarded and both food and beverage will be available. There are plenty of classes for registrants, including two for racecars.

Admission for Saturday, September 6th is $15 to the grandstand for adults, with kids, ages 6 to 12, still only $5 to see the 6th annual Bob Hubert Memorial B-Modified Championship Shootout and the other four classes of A-mods, MFA Oil / Break Time Sportsman, Hobby Stocks, and 4 cyl. Hornets race, with 30 laps for the B-modifieds in their special format. Rates for the popular Family Pass will be $35, which includes admission to the grandstands for 2 adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are always free. The grandstands and pits will open at 4 p.m. A pit pass is $25. Hot laps begin at 6:15 following a short drivers' meeting. Plenty of door prizes are given away to both adults and kids alike in the grandstands each and every Saturday night. "Dirt Track Racing at its Best" will take place again, September 6th at 7pm at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly, Missouri on U.S. Highway 24.
