Nezworski tops 34 field for first career Deery win

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 29) – Andy Nezworski has a new highlight for his Deery Brothers Summer Series career.

Nezworski led all 40 laps enroute to the $2,000 checkers Tuesday evening at 34 Raceway. The victory, his first ever in the tour for IMCA J & J Steel Late Models, also made Nezworski the third different winner in as many series events to beat the weather so far this season.

Taking the point from outside row one, Nezworski had to hold off Justin Reed following five scattered cautions. Reed looked underneath several times but couldn’t complete the pass, staying close before falling off the pace with a couple laps left and following six car lengths behind Nezworski at the finish.

Rounding out the top five were Mark Burgtorf, Denny Woodworth and Lonnie Bailey. Points leader Todd Cooney moved up 10 spots after qualifying from his “B” feature to run sixth.

The winner of the special Ironman race during the 2007 Pepsi USA Nationals at West Burlington, Nezworski pulled away from the pack with Reed in pursuit. The cautions and resulting re-starts took most of the lapped cars out of the equation while Burgtorf, Woodworth and Bailey dueled for third.

Matt Ryan, another “B” qualifier, advanced 10 spots to end in 10th; provisional starter Mike Klinkkammer was a plus 11 on the night, finishing right behind Ryan.

Nezworski’s best finish in 27 previous Deery career features was fifth, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines last summer. He’d run seventh and 10th in tour opening events earlier this month at Eagle, Neb., Raceway.

Forty-five cars were on hand for opening night of the midweek doubleheader. The Deery Series travels next to Quincy, Ill., Raceway on Wednesday, April 30. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Inclement weather had postponed that twinbill from April 12-13.
