Tyler Cale holds off dad in modified feature; Redmann gets first stock car win

BURLINGTON, IA (June 14) - The 34 Raceway/ Ideal Ready Mix Birthday bash drew both fans and cars out Saturday, June 14 with over 2200 fans in the stands and 135 cars in the pits. The nightıs action saw not five but six classes competing with the addition of the dwarf mod lites this week.
Besides the $5.00 gate admission, 34 Raceway offered a special invitation to persons with Burlington Steamboat Days tickets to come out and enjoy a night or racing following the announcement that the remaining ³Steamboat Days² events had to be cancelled do to the high water on the Mississippi.
Steamboat Days ticket holders who presented their tickets were admitted free to the races. The evening also included free birthday cake to the fans and
$1 beer courtesy of Fleck Sales.

Race fans saw plenty of racing action with three drivers getting their first wins including Jim Redmann (stock cars), Lockridge, Justin Buchholz, (mod lites), Pleasant Hill, Il., and Brian Tipps, (hobby stock), Wapello. Getting repeat wins for the year were Jason Frankel (late models), Quincy, Il, getting his third win, Brian Hetrick, (sprints), Stronghurst, Il., getting win number three and Tyler Cale, (modifieds), Donnellson, getting win number
2 for the season.

Tyler Cale didnıt think about Fatherıs Day being Sunday, but that probably wouldnıt have made much difference as the young driver from Donnellson raced to his second IMCA Modified win this year at 34 Raceway. Tyler took the lead from Dave Anderson on lap six of the twenty lap, twenty four car feature and would pull way from the field. But moving up from his sixth row start was his dad, Kevin who had moved into the number two spot with three laps to go.
A caution on lap nineteen made for a green, white checkered finish and a race to the checkers, but the young Cale would keep his lead and get the win. Kevin Cale finished second and Dean McGee got by Dave Anderson on the final lap to finish third. Racing action was stopped on lap five when Darin Thye took a wild ride on the back stretch. With the caution flag out for an incident in turn two, Thye had slowed. Another car then hit Thye sending him into the back stretch wall causing him to flip end over end and then barrel roll several times. Thye was able to walk away from the accident.

It was nearly a three week sweep for the IMCA Late Models as it looked like they would have a third straight week of flag to flag racing. Cory Richards took the early lead in the twenty five lapper followed by Jay Chenoweth and Jay Johnson. Chenoweth took the second lead of the race on lap six before giving it back up to Richards on the next lap. Jay Johnson moved into second and stayed with Richards for the next six laps then took advantage of the only caution on lap fourteen. Johnson took the lead on the restart and then worked to hold off Jason Frankel. Frankel, already a two time winner this year, got by Johnson on lap sixteen and pulled away from the field. With seven laps to go, Tom Bowling took advantage of a bobble by Johnson in turns three and four to move in to second, but Frankel had a good size lead and went on to take the checkered flag for the third time this year. Bowling finished second and Lonnie Baily got by Johnson to finish third.

Brian Hetrick took the lead with eight laps to go in the 305 Sprint feature and went on to win his third sprint feature this year. Bobby Mincer, driving for Randy Plath, took the early lead of the twenty lap race with Donnie Steward right behind. Thirteen laps into the race and driving through lapped traffic, Hetrick, who had moved into second on lap ten, closed in on Mincer and passed him in turn 2 for the lead. Hetrick went on to take the checkered flag followed by Mincer, Steward, Whiting and Ditsworth rounding out the top five.

³Iıve been so close so many times², said Jim Redmann as he sat in his car on the front stretch. Redmann took the checkered flag for the first time in the 20 car, 15 lap IMCA Stock Car feature. After taking the lead on lap two, it was clear sailing from the Lockridge, Iowa driver. With Redmann out in front the battle for second was raging behind him between Cale Samberg, Abe Huls and Corey Strothman, finishing in that order.

Thirty five hobby stocks were on hand competing in four heats and a B- feature to qualify for the 24 car hobby stock feature. But one of the trackıs most competitive classes struggled on this night with a total of seven yellow flags (one for debris on the track) in the first four laps. The race finally had to be called on a time limit and leader Brian Tipps, Wapello was given the win. Although the hobby stock class struggled this week, look for them back next week to give the fans a thrilling show.

Another class was added to the racing action this week with the addition of the Dwarf Mod Lites. Twenty four cars showed up for competition with Justin Buchholz of Pleasant Hill getting the win. Buchholz took the lead from Bob Helm on lap nine of the fifteen lap race and never looked back. Gregg Rossell finished second followed by Rob Guss, Jeremy Mowery and Benny Burnett rounding out the tope five.
