Itıs dadıs turn this week as Bailey gets late model win

By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (July 5) Point racing continued at 34 Raceway last week on Whiteyıs Bar and Billiards Night. It was a draw/redraw show for all five classes with both track and IMCA points awarded. Four of the five classes saw repeat winners with a first time winner in the hobby stock division.

Getting repeat wins for the year were Lonnie Bailey (late model), Quincy, Il., Brian Hetrick (sprints), Stronghurst, Il., Dennis LaVeine (modifieds), Burlington and Abe Huls (stock cars), Carthage, Il. Getting his first win in the hobby stock division was Brodie Dopler, Wapello.

The June 28 races saw Quincyıs Matt Bailey take the checkered flag in the IMCA Late Model feature. This week it was dadıs turn. Lonnie Bailey took the lead in the 25 lap late model from Sam Halstead with five laps to go taking to the inside of the #84 in turn four. Bailey would then pull away to take the checkered flag for the third time this year in a race that saw one yellow flag. Halstead, who was an earlier heat race winner, finished second followed by Tom Darbyshire, Jason Frankel and Keith Pratt rounding out the top five. Midway through the 2008 season point leader, Frankel holds a 10 point lead over Lonnie Bailey.

Brian Hetrick, Stronghurst, Il., raced to his fourth Sebastian Sandblasting
305 Sprint feature win this year. Hetrick took the lead from Justin Newberry on lap two of the 15 lap race following a yellow flag. He went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Donnie Steward finished second followed by Kevin Hetrick, Newberry and Ditsworth finishing out the top five.

Burlingtonıs Dennis LaVeine made it two wins in a row and the third this year in the Miller Lite IMCA Modified class. LaVeine took the lead in the twenty-one car field on lap one. By the end of the twenty lap race, Dean McGee, Sr., had moved up to the second spot challenging LaVeine at the end.
But Dennis would hold off McGee who had pulled along side on the front stretch for his third win. McGee finished second, Bill Roberts took third followed by Brandon Rothzen and Sean Wyett. Roberts currently leads the point race for the modifieds with 318 followed by Andy Krieger with 298.

Abe Huls, Carthage, Il., was another repeat winner taking the checkered flag in the 22 car IMCA Stock Car feature for the second straight week. Huls took the lead from the drop of the green and never looked back. With Huls out in front, all eyes were on the second spot where a battle for second was raging as several cars raced bumper to bumper and side by side. The second of two yellow flags came out on lap fourteen which meant for a green, white, checkered finish. Jason Cook had moved into the number two spot and challenged Huls at the end. But Huls held on to win with a single car length separating the two. Four points separates the point leader, John Oliver, Jr.
and Cook 318 to 312.

Wapelloıs Brodie Dopler won his first hobby stock feature this year topping the 22 car field in a time shortened race. Dopler took the early lead of the scheduled fifteen lap race with three time winner, Matt Gavin giving chase.
The two raced side by side, bumper to bumper throughout. Gavin took a brief lead on lap seven but the fourth caution came out and the field reverted to the previous fully completed lap giving Dopler the lead back. With the 20 minute time limit up following the final caution, it made for a green, white, checkered finish. After the completion of eight laps, Dopler held off Gavin to get his first win in a close finish. Dopler dedicated his win to his grandfather Chick Dopler who passed away the previous Sunday.
