Bowling, Roberts, Fenton pick up first wins at 34 Raceway
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (July 12) Budweiser Golden Eagle night at 34 Raceway Saturday, July 12 saw three new faces in the winners circle for the 2008 season. Getting their first wins this year were Tom Bowling, Jr., Danville (late models), Bill Roberts, Jr., Burlington (modifieds) and Doug Fenton, Burlington (hobby stocks). Getting repeat wins for the year were Todd Holsteen, Burlington, (stock cars) and Brian Hetrick, Stronghurst, Il., (305 sprints).

Danvillešs Tom Bowling, Jr., took the lead from Colby Springsteen on lap twelve of the 25 lap J & J Steel Ideal Ready Mix IMCA late model feature and went on to get his first win this year. Bowling went to the inside of Springsteen in turn three for the lead and pulled away from the field.
Moving up from his eighth row start was Quincyšs Mark Burgtorf taking over the number two spot with five laps to go. But Bowlingšs lead was too much and Burgtorf had to settle for second. Jay Johnson finished third followed by Matt Strassheim and Springsteen in the eighteen car field.

Burlingtonšs Bill Roberts raced to his first Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature win topping the nineteen car feature from his sixth row start in the
21 car field. Roberts took the lead from Dave Anderson following a caution on lap five and never looked back. The race was halted for a while when Al Hejna and Andy Krieger both connected when cars spun in front of them.
Kriegeršs wheel was wedged in under Hejnašs car and crews eventually had to remove a tire to separate the two cars. Both cars were able to continue the race with Hejna moving back up to finish second. Adam Mitchell, Dean McGee and Mike Weikert, Jr., rounded out the top five. Hejna, from Clearlake, Ia is trying to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation by racing at every track in Iowa. Selling JDF T-shirts from his trailer, $20 of the $25 cost went to the JDF.

Brian Hetrick, Stronghurst, Il. got win number 5 for the year in the Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprint division. Hetrick took the lead from brother Kevin on lap twelve of the fifteen lap race and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths over Bobby Mincer. Mincer, Kevin Hetrick, Donnie Steward and Justin Newberry rounded out the top five.

A thrilling race by the Mikešs Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars was seen with Burlingtonšs Todd Holsteen making a last lap, last turn pass for the win.
Derek Goble took the early lead in the 25 car field leading the first four laps before Jim Redmann got past for lead number two. Redmann then led the next three laps until he and Goble got together bringing out the yellow flag. Holsteen then took over the lead working to hold off Jason Cook and Jeff Mueller. Cook was able to take the lead from Holsteen on lap twelve and led the next two laps. On the final and fifteenth lap Holsteen made a last lap move shooting under Cook coming out of turn four and went on to take the checkered flag for the second time this year. Cook finished second with John Oliver getting by Mueller to take third.

Burlingtonšs Doug Fenton took the checkered flag for the first time in the Pepsi Hobby Stock feature topping the twenty car field. Chuck Underwood looked to be on his way to his first win but Doug Fenton spoiled his quest when Fenton took the lead after a red flag restart on lap twelve when Chad Krogmeier rolled heading into turn one. Fenton took the lead from Underwood and went on to take the checkered flag followed by Underwood, Brodie Dopler, Dan Wenig and Matt Gavin.
