BURLINGTON, IA (7-26-08) ‹ With the 2008 point season winding down the
battle for position is important for area racers and feature wins are a
major plus. This week on Titan Broadcasting Night at 34 Raceway on Saturday,
July 26 fans saw three drivers getting their first feature wins of the year.
Taking the checkered flags for the first time this year were Jason Gerdes
(hobby stocks), Lomax, Il., Jay Chenoweth (late models), Wapello and Andy
Krieger, (modifieds), Burlington. Two of the six classes saw repeat winners
as Jayson Ditsworth got his third 305 sprint win this year as did Jim
Redmann in the IMCA Stock Car division.
Coming Up this Saturday, August 2 is Hungry Bear Restaurant night at the
races with point racing in all five classes in a draw/redraw show for all
classes. Enjoy late model ole timers Ron Jackson and Lynn Richards as they
announce the races. Join us for some oldie fun and exciting races with the
point battles heating up. Also mark your calendars for the ³Night of the
Twins² with double features for the Sprint Invaders 360s on August 16.
Wapello¹s Jay Chenoweth took the checkered flag in the 25 lap J & J Steel
Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature for his first ever win at 34
Raceway. Chenoweth took the lead from his front row start and would pull
away from the field early on. By lap thirteen though Mendon, Illinois¹ Keith
Pratt would close the gap pulling up to Chenoweth¹s bumper. The two raced
bumper to bumper for the next few laps before Chenoweth would be able to
pull slightly ahead again. Behind Chenoweth and Pratt, Tom Bowling and Jason
Frankel had joined the leaders for a four way battle for the lead.
With three laps to go it was again bumper to bumper action in the top four
spots with Chenoweth holding off Pratt taking the checkered flag by less
than a car length ahead of Pratt. Frankel currently holds a thirteen point
lead of Bowling in the point race.
Gladstone, Illinois¹ Jayson Ditsworth won his third Sebastian Sandblasting
305 Sprint feature this year at 34 Raceway leading from start to finish.
Ditsworth would pull ahead of the field to win by a large margin. Finishing
second was Donnie Steward and third went to Brian Hetrick. Hetrick leads the
points standings with 492 points over Donnie Steward with 459.
Twenty five cars started the Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature with Bill
Parks and Jeremy Harris on the front row. Parks took the early lead only to
give it up to Brandon Rothzen on the next lap. Rothzen led the next eight
laps with Mike Weikert, Jr. on his tail. After six yellow flags a time limit
was called and led to a green, white, checkered finish after the sixth
caution. Coming out of turn four, Rothzen had a slight bobble on the front
stretch and Andy Krieger took advantage passing Rothzen for the lead as they
headed for the white flag. Krieger held on to take the checkered flag
followed by Kevin Cale and Rothzen. The win by Krieger gave him a two point
lead over Bill Roberts who finished fourteenth.
An outstanding field of twenty six Mike¹s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars would
take to the track for their feature race of the evening with John Brockway
and Derek Goble on the front row. Goble would take the early lead holding
his ground for the next seven laps before two time winner, Jim Redmann would
pass Goble coming out of turn four for the lead. A yellow on lap twelve
would close the field and a battle was raging for second between Goble, Jeff
Mueller and Todd Holsteen as the raced side by side, bumper to bumper.
Then on lap fifteen as Redmann took the checkered flag, Mueller pulled out
of the pack and finished second followed by Goble and Holsteen. John Oliver,
Jr., leads the Stock Car point race with 421 points over Mueller with 402.
Twenty five cars set the field for the Pepsi Hobby Stock feature with Jason
Gerdes getting his first win this year at 34 Raceway. Gerdes led from start
to finish in the fifteen lap race holding off Alex Buffington at the wire
with less than a car length separating the two. Randy Wachter finished third
and Doug Fenton took fourth. Matt Gavin currently holds the led in the hobby
stock point standings with 436 over Dan Wenig with 397.
