Frankel, Hetrick named 2008 track champions

BURLINGTON, IA (August 23) Saturday, August 23 was season championship
night at 34 Raceway for the J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models and
the Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints. Season championship night is a big
night for the racers where the culmination of what theyıve been working for
comes to and end in their hopes of a season points title. This night however
the tone was somber early on as the track paid tribute to a fellow racer in
a pre race tribute. Sprint car racer Brian Hetrick of Stronghurst, Illinois
was remembered and honored prior to the start of the racing action. Brian, a
racer at 34 Raceway for the past ten years, died following a motorcycle
accident on Monday, August 18. Brian was leading the sprint point races with
one week of points racing to go before his life was taken away. The sprint
car family of racers at 34 Raceway joined together and decided they would
race on this night, but not for points. They, along with promoters Jeff and
Amy Laue decided to declare Brian the 2008 Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprint
Car Track Champion. A fitting tribute to one of 34 Racewayıs finest. Also
competing for the points championship Saturday were the J & J Steel Ideal
Ready Mix IMCA Late Models. Jason Frankel led the field with a 20 point lead
over Tom Bowling, Jr. Frankel went on to win the 25 lap late model feature
clinching the late model track championship for the 2008 season.
Coming up this Saturday, August 30 is season point championship night for
the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds, Mikeıs Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars and the
Pepsi Hobby Stocks on H & L Mack Night. Late Models will also take to the
track in a draw and redraw program. The Ideal Ready Mix, Louisa
Communications, I-Wireless 4 Cylinders Dash For Cash Series returns to the
raceway also this Saturday. Mark your calendars now for August 12 and 13
for the 2008 Pepsi USA Late Models Nationals.
Jason Frankel had a twenty point lead over Tom Bowling, Jr. going into the
nights racing for the J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models. Sitting
on the front row with Bowling along side, Frankel would take the early lead
in the twenty five lap feature. On lap four, Bowling pulled in to the pits
with car problems and it was clear sailing for the Quincy, Illinois driver
as he went on to take the checkered flag at get his first points title at 34
Raceway. Tom Goble crossed the finish line behind Frankel to take second and
Keith Pratt finished third. Frankel took the points title with a 33 point
advantage over Bowling 563 to 530.
With the Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprint season championship points title
already going to Brian Hetrick, the 305 sprints still took to the track for
their last night of competition in the 2008 year at 34 Raceway. Making their
first lap in a missing man formation to honor Hetrick, fourteen cars took
the green flag with Donnie Steward taking the early lead . On lap fifteen of
the twenty lap race, Jayson Ditsworth took over the number one spot and lead
two laps before a lap car forced Ditsworth up over turn 2 and nearly into
the pits. The incident also involved Steward as he tried to avoid Ditsworth
bringing out the yellow flag. When racing resumed the leaders had to go to
the rear of the field putting Burlingtonıs Bobby Mincer in the lead. Mincer
went on to take the checkered flag for the win. Following the winners
photos, Mincer dedicated the win to the Hetrick family presenting them with
the winners trophy.
Brandon Rothzen, Media, Il. won his first Miller Lite Modified feature this
year at 34 Raceway after coming close several times. Rothzen took the lead
from Sean Wyett with two laps to go in the twenty lap race. The two raced
side by side, bumper to bumper the final two laps but Rothzen would be able
to hold off Wyett to win by several car lengths. With season championships
on the line next week, Andy Krieger holds a 17 point lead over Bill Roberts,
Jr.
Eldonıs Bert McDaniel won his first feature at 34 Raceway topping a twenty
seven car field. McDaniels took the lead from his front row start and pulled
away from the field. With McDaniels out in front all eyes were on the battle
for second between Nick Fenton, Jason Cook and John Oliver. The three put on
quite a show for the fans exchanging positions several times. But when all
was said and done, McDaniels took the win by a large margin with Fenton
holding off Oliver and Cook to finish second. The Mikeıs Auto Parts IMCA
Stock Cars will hold season championships this Saturday with Oliver holding
a narrow five point lead over Jason Cook, 553 to 548. Jeff Mueller follows
with 537. It will be a barn burner, donıt miss it.
Burlingtonıs Chad Krogmeier got his first Pepsi Hobby Stock feature win
topping the twenty-two car field. Krogmeier took the lead on lap four from
Victor Hastings and had to then hold of Alex Buffington and Tanner Thomann.
With one lap to go Buffington had pulled up along side of Krogmeier but
couldnıt complete the move as Krogmeier went on to take the checkered flag
with Buffington right behind him. An engine claim on Buffington followed
with Buffington refusing the sell. The Pepsi Hobby Stocks will also compete
in the season points championship this Saturday with Matt Gavin holding a
substantial 32 point lead over Doug Fenton.
