Rain doesn’t stop action at 34 Raceway, Lynch gets first win

By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA  (May 18) – With over 3 inches of rain falling at the 34 Raceway racing facility last week, most of it on Friday, the races were on as usually Saturday to the amazement of fans and racers.

Thanks to the efforts of a hard working crew that began work to dry it out early Saturday morning it had dried out and they were ready to go racing. 130 cars gathered to compete in the five classes of racing on Pepsi Night. A total of  15 heat races, 1 B-Feature and five features gave the fans plenty of racing action. The track also honored area veterans giving them free admission to the grandstands.

Getting wins Saturday were Mark Burgtorf (late models), Quincy, Il., Josh Foster (modifieds), Montrose, Kevin Hetrick (305 sprints), Gladstone, Il., Abe Huls (stock cars), Carthage, Il., and Jim Lynch, (hobby stocks), Donnellson.

The Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds put on a good show for the crowd with thirty-six of the open wheel cars battling in four heats and a B- feature for a spot in the twenty four car feature field. Three cautions stopped the action briefly in the twenty lap race with Josh Foster taking the checkered flag for the third time this year. Beau Taylor, Canton, Mo. took the early lead from his front row start only to give it up to Davenport’s Rich Smith on lap five. Smith would lead the field for the next several laps before Foster would get past him on lap seventeen of the twenty lapper. Foster would then pull away to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Smith would take second followed by Tyler Cale, Darrin Duffy and Dennis laVeine in the top five.

After winning the Brian Hetrick Memorial race earlier in the season, Gladstone, Illinois’ Kevin Hetrick was back in the winners circle.

With three inches of rain falling at the track last week, including an all day rain on Friday, Hetrick wasn’t really expecting to race.

But when he found out the races were on he had to do some quick work to get his 305 sprint ready to race. Hetrick took the early lead in the 16 car field working to hold off Dave Anderson early on. The two would pull away from the field, but moving up would be Bobby Mincer.

Mincer took over the second spot from Anderson on lap eleven followed closely by Jayson Ditsworth. The two would put on a battle before they eventually got together in turn four to bring out the caution.

Mincer was headed to the pits and Ditsworth would make the restart at the back of the field. This put Anderson back in the second spot. As Hetrick went on to take the checkered flag, John Draper would pass Anderson with two laps to go to finish second. Anderson settled for third followed by Jarrod Schneiderman and Ryan Jamison

Twenty eight of the twenty nine Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars took to the track with Cole Simmons and Rod Staats on the front row.

Staats took the early lead in the twenty lap feature before giving it up to Chris Webb on lap seven. Webb and Staats battled for the lead for the next few laps as fans were treated to three wide and even four wide racing several times throughout the race. Midway through, Abe Huls would close in on the leaders taking the lead away from Webb on lap thirteen. With two laps to go, the yellow flag came out to make it a green, white, checkered finish. With Webb and Chris Larson battling for second, the caution would give them a shot at the leader. But Huls was too fast and pulled away again as he took the checkered flag.

Mark Burgtorf, got his first win this year at the 3/8 mile pulling away from the twenty one car late model field early on.. With Burgtorf holding a commanding lead, Jason Frankel had moved into the second spot passing Matt Strassheim on lap fourteen. But Burgtorf was too fast and went on to take the checkered flag by a large margin.

Frankel finished second followed by Strassheim, Tom Darbyshire and Jay Johnson rounding out the top five. The win gives Burgtorf some momentum for this Saturdays World of Outlaw Late Model Show at 34 Raceway where he plans to compete among the best for a shot at the $10,000 prize

An field of twenty seven hobby stocks saw Donnellson’s Jim Lynch get his first win at 34 Raceway. Victory Hastings was having a good run taking the early lead and leading the field around the track for six circuits.  The second of two cautions came out on lap seven and at that point Hastings pulled into the pits with a flat tire. When racing resumed, last week’s winner, Ray Raker had taken over the first place spot holding his lead for the next six laps as he worked to hold off Lynch. There was bumper to bumper, side by side racing before Lynch was able to get by Raker for good and went on to take the checkered flag.  Raker finished second followed by Dan Wenig, Luke McLaughlin and Derek St. Clair finishing out the top five.
