Cale, Gower take the checkered flags in Modified and Late Model features that go flag to flag.
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (May 21, 2011) – Racers and fans paid tribute to Johnny Johnson  Saturday night with over 100 cars in the pits to compete for the nights racing action. Classes included late models, modifieds, stock cars, 305 sprints and making their first appearance at 34 Raceway this season, the Sport Mods.  34 Raceway wanted to pay tribute to  a man that did so much for racing. Johnson, who died Feb.

19  following a long illness, was a racer  himself, owned 34 Raceway for several years making it the premier race facility it is and made a big impact with racers locally and throughout the country.. A special Mega Candy Dash for the kids was courtesy of the Johnson family and Ideal Ready Mix.

A late week weather forecast called for 80% chance of rain, but the weather turned out beautiful  for the five classes of racing action.

Getting their first wins at 34 Raceway this year were Joey Gower, Quincy, Il. (late models), Tyler Cale, Donnellson (modifieds), and Jeff Mueller, New London (sport mods). Getting their second wins of the season at 34 Raceway were Chris Webb, Biggsville, Il. (stock cars) and Ryan Jamison, Mediapolis (305 sprints).

Flag to flag, that’s what fans want to see in racing action. And that’s what they got at 34 Raceway Saturday night. The Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds took to the track for the first feature of the night with twenty-four cars in the lineup. Josh Foster and Andy Krieger set the pace with Foster taking the early lead gradually pulling away from the field midway through the 20 lap feature. Late in the race, Cale was closing in on Foster and would pull along side on lap eighteen. On the next lap Cale pulled slightly ahead for the lead and went on to take the checkered flag by a little more than a car length one lap later. Dusty Kraklio would finish third and Brandon Rothzen would come up from his twelth place start to finish fourth.

Ryan Jamison took the checkered flag for the second time this year driving for Jim Hetrick in the 21J. Jamison took the lead from Andy Huston on lap two of the twenty lap W.T.Gabeline and Sons Trucking

305 Sprint feature and would hold a comfortable lead throughout the race. Burlington’s Bobby Mincer, starting fourth row,  would start to cut Jamisons lead but wouldn’t be able to catch him settling for second as Jamision took the checkereds. Matt Krieger was the hard charging, starting fourteenth and finishing third.

Take away the first six laps of the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Car feature and it could be have been one of the best features of the night. Nineteen cars started the feature race with  Travis Hartman and Abe Huls on the front row. The Stock Cars struggled for the first six laps with six cautions but once they got going  they put on a show for the fans. Chris Webb took the lead from Abe Huls on lap four and the two would race side by side, bumper to bumper for the next seven laps of the twenty lap race. Derek St. Clair would join the duo hanging with them. Webb would put a little space between him and Huls at the end of the race to take the checkered flag as Huls held off St. Clair to finish second. Sky Griffith would finish fourth and Todd Reitzler of Grinnell would move up from his fifth row start spot to finish fifth.

The J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature saw Joey Gower, Quincy, Il. get his first ever late model feature win at 34 Raceway. Gower took the lead from Jeff Guengerich on lap six of the twenty –five lap feature and went on to take the checkered by flag by a large margin in flag to flag non stop action. Guengerich would finish second followed by Matt Bailey and Keith Pratt.

The new Weikert Iron and Metal IMCA Sport Mods made their first appearance at 34 Raceway for the 2011 season . Rain cancelled their first appearance on April 16 and Saturday they came in full force with twenty three checking in for competition. Jeff Mueller claimed victory on their first night. Mueller would be involved in a crash in

stock car heat race action but would come back in the sport mods

feature and take the checkered flag. Levi Smith would take the early lead  holding off Phillip Cossel and Rod Staats for the first seven laps before Staats would go to the inside in turn four  to become the second leader of the race. Statts’s lead would be short lived when Mueller  would pass him on lap nine. With Mueller in the lead and two laps to go, a caution flag would come out making for a green, white, checkered finish and a chance for Staats to make his move. But Mueller  wouldn’t allow it as he went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Staats would finish second and Roger Dresden moved up from his 23rd place starting spot to finish third.
