Champions Crowned at Adams County Speedway
CORNING, IA (Sept. 8) - The final night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
action is done and over and a period has been put at the end of the 2007 season.
Feature winners were Chris Spieker, Dan Mueller, Mike Garner and Brad Bergren.
2007 track champions are Spieker, Jeremy Tibben, Garner and Matt Hudson.
Al Zeitner shot to the early lead in the Whelen late model feature and began to
stretch out a lead over Jason O’Brien. Chris Spieker moved to third but it
appeared Zeitner and O’Brien would be able to maintain their positions ahead of
Spieker. By mid-race, slower lapped traffic played a roll in bunching up the top
three with Spieker wiggling through to take the lead. Spieker then sped away to
claim his 12th win on the season and was followed to the finish by Zeitner,
O’Brien, Justin Zeitner and Karl Ritterbusch. Spieker claimed the championship
ahead of Ritterbusch and Paul Glendenning.
In the Budweiser modified feature Jerry Carlson launched from his third starting
spot to take the lead for the first 6 laps. Dan Mueller then charged up from his
tenth starting spot to take over the lead, which he held comfortably over
Carlson until a caution with three laps to go. On the restart, Mueller pulled
out again and went on to his fifth win of the season. Kirby Stiens used the
restart to get by Carlson for second. Russell Stewart and Jeff James came home
fourth and fifth. Jeremy Tibben stayed clear of trouble to finish 9th and take
his second straight Budweiser modified title.
Greg Miller charged up from his third starting spot to take the lead in the
Northland Oil pro street feature. Miller held off the challenges of Joe Zadina
and then Tony Hardisty to keep the lead while Ron Ballinger, Mike Garner and
Steve Churchill, who started the night with only three points separating them,
moved up and into contention. Garner got into third and began pressuring Miller
and Hardisty for the top spot with Ballinger and Churchill a few spots behind.
With fewer than five laps to go, Ballinger moved into fourth and would have
claimed the championship had Garner remained third. Garner was not done fighting
for the lead and he finally worked around Miller and Hardisty with only two laps
to go to take his third win of the season, and more importantly, the
championship.
Brad Bergren and Kevin Yearington battled for the early lead in the NAPA hobby
stock feature with Bergren leading lap one and Yearington leading laps 2 to 8.
All eyes during the early part of the race were on point leader Matt Hudson, who
started 20th because of a faulty ignition switch forcing him to drop out of the
heat race. Hudson quickly raced up into the top five. Bergren took back the lead
on lap 9 with Hudson chasing him. That pair raced that way to the end with
Bergren picking up his fifth win of the season ahead of Hudson, Tom Myers,
Yearington and Jeremy Auten. Hudson claimed his first career point championship.
There will be no races at the speedway next weekend, but join us September 22nd
for the ninth annual “Tradition” for streets, hobby stocks and hornets. For more
