Zadina and Vicker Race to Wins in Tenth Annual Tradition

CORNING, IA (Sept 20) - Mother Nature finally relented. After a year that saw the Adams County Speedway cancel a record tying nine events due to rain and floods she provided stellar weather for the tenth annual running of the Tradition on Saturday, September 20th. Corning’s Joe Zadina and Creston’s Ryan Vicker claimed their spot in the record books by scoring wins in the street stock and hobby stock features.

Thirty-two cars were on hand in the combined pro-street / street stock division to attempt to make the twenty-four car field. Heat race winners included Craig Garner from Clarinda, Ron Ballinger from Red Oak, seven time track champion Greg Miller from Lorimor and Zadina. In the Miller Dash for Cash Greg Miller claimed the checkers and elected to pocket the entire three hundred dollar purse and start sixth in the feature event, handing the pole position to Red Oak’s Jeff Orr.

Orr could only hang on to the lead for one lap as Miller made a march to the front, claiming the lead by lap number six and holding on until the midpoint inversion at lap fifteen. After inverting the top six to start the final half of the race, Miller took only two laps to come back to front and would appear to have the race well in hand. But Smokin’ Joe Zadina and Creston’s Scuba Steve Churchill found a fast lane around the top of the track reeling in Miller, with Zadina capturing the lead on lap number twenty-five of the thirty lap event. The final five laps were door to door and at the checkers it was Zadina, with Churchill, Miller and Ron Ballinger all finishing within a half a second of the leader.

In the hobby stock feature Steve Churchill charged from his outside front row starting position to the lead which he held until lap eight when motor problems sent him to the pits for the night. Red Oak’s Jerod Weston inherited the lead, but just two laps later Vicker took over and captured the one hundred dollar bonus for leading at the midpoint. After the top six inverted for the second half of the race it took Vicker seven laps to finally get around Creston’s tenacious Robert Hague. Vicker held the lead to the checkers, capturing another hundred dollar bonus for leading both sections. Vicker was followed at the checkers by Wall Lake standout Andy Boeckman, Creston’s Dennis Elliott, Weston, and Des Moines racer Rob Allison. Thirty nine hobby stocks were on hand for the event.

In the Hornet class ten competitors battled it out for two six lap races. Villisca’s Eddie Sockrider shot to the front in the first feature, and came from the rear of the second race to capture both checkered flags, the trophy and the first place purse. Harlan’s Dave Archibald and Corning’s Josh Camden swapped second and third place in the two events to split second and third overall.

The B-Mod / Sport Mod class made their first appearance at ACS with Knoxville’s Bill Gibson taking the crown as he won the twelve lap feature event from his outside second row starting position. The top five included Dennis Cook from Council Bluffs, Creston’s Barry Sandeman, former track champion Rick Germar from Red Oak, and Shelby’s Chad Dill.

The next event for the Adams County Speedway will be the 2008 Champions awards banquet to be held at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic on Saturday, January 24th, 2009. More details will be made available later on the speedway website at www.acspeedway.com.
