VanderBeek, Mather, Gibson, Porter, Stephenson take Season Championship checkers at Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway

BLOOMFIELD, IA (Aug. 25, 2006) -  The final night of USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series was held at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway with 89 cars checked in for Season Championships Night. This was the second largest car count ever, second only to the 100+ car count earlier in the year at Bloomfield. All five of the feature events were thrillers with two of the night's point battles coming down to the final lap of the main event to find out who was the track champion.

In the Kollision Korner Hornet division, the track championship was already decided before the event, but Dale Porter of Floris still wanted another win to add to his resume along with the track championship. Porter held off last week's winner, Larry Hopkins of Ottumwa, who took second, with Gene Irwin of Bloomfield taking third and Ryan Yanke of Bloomfield in fourth.

The Mid America 305 Winged Sprint feature saw Louis Lynch of Glenwood, Mo., pace the field for the first 14 laps with a battle between himself and Mark Widmar of Ottumwa, who tried several times to make the pass on Lynch. On lap eight of the 16-lap event, however, Widmar made contact with the inside tire barrier, sending him to the back of the field. On the restart, the two green machines of Lynch and Des Moines' Matt Stephenson put on a show with wheel-to-wheel action. With only three laps remaining, Stephenson tried the slide job coming off of turn 4, causing Lynch to apply the brakes and giving Stephenson the lead. Lynch tried to regain the lead, but ended up in the runner-up spot when the checkers flew. This was Stephenson's first win in the division. The third spot went to rookie Logan Trueblood of Memphis, Mo., who had his best finish of the year. Veteran driver Bob Lamb of Mitchellville, in the Black Sheep Motorsports No. 47 machine, took fourth after bringing out a new car for this event.

In the Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Car feature, Phil McClure of Floris and Chris Hawkins of Drakesville battled for the race lead with Hawkins leading the first lap. Shane Weller of Agency closed the gap and battled for the lead, taking the top spot on the second circuit. Weller led the next eight laps before Colt Mather of Webster and Matt Greiner of Washington closed in on the race leader, making for a three-wide battle for the lead. Mather took the advantage using the bottom side of the speedway, with Greiner running a close second with Weller slipping back to third. Mather led the final seven laps with Greiner trying several times to pass Mather on the bottom side of the racing surface but ended up in the second spot. The battle for third spot heated up between Weller and Mike Harward, who went door-to-door the final three laps with Harward taking third and Weller settling for fourth.

The fourth feature of the night was the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks with a battle between first and second only separated by 42 points between Nathan Wood of Keswick and Ben Jones of Williamsburg, who held the crown from last year and was trying to repeat as the track champion. Jim Sulser of Centerville and Mike Shelton of Ottumwa led the field to the green flag with Shelton taking the lead and would lead until lap six before Jones took the lead and crossed the finish line in first. After post-race inspection, however, Jones was disqualified. Bill Gibson of Knoxville, who finished second, was awarded his first win of the 2006 season at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway, and third of his career. The runner-up spot went to Wood who also locked up the 2006 track championship regardless of Jones' disqualification. Jim Sulser scored third and Ray Lasser Jr. of Ottumwa garnered the fourth spot.

In the final feature of the night it was the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modifieds in action with Jared Durbin of Fort Madison and Dennis Elliott of Mt. Ayr battling for the track title with Elliott taking the crown by only six points after the checkered flag flew. Durbin led the first six laps of the 20-lap event with Jerry Pilcher of Bloomfield battling Durbin for the lead. With the two drivers going wheel-to-wheel, this allowed Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon to close the gap and make for a three-car battle with VanderBeek taking the lead while Durbin and Pilcher continued to battle for the second position. The runner-up spot was getting very heated with young rising star Brandon Banks of Washington passing both Pilcher and Durbin for the second spot with Brad Pinkerton following into third. Pinkerton also passed Banks for the second spot with Durbin regaining the third spot with only three laps remaining while brake problems sent Banks back to a sixth-place finish after making a strong run. Pilcher work his way back to finish fourth behind VanderBeek, Pinkerton and Durbin. After passing two cars late in the main event, Elliott finished ninth and gave himself enough points to capture the track title by six markers.
