Aikey and Shute Win at Iowa State Fair Speedway
By David Wilkinson

DES MOINES, Ia (May 5, 2006) - Friday was one of those cold, windy, spring nights for racing fans, drivers, team members, and officials. On the track it was night full of caution flags, race stoppages and some great racing. The IMCA late models opened the season at the fairgrounds and Jeff Aikey won the race. Other winners were Todd Shute, IMCA modifieds; Steve Curtis, IMCA stock cars; Bret Moyer, Cookies BBQ Dirt Trucks; Rick Gladson, IMCA SportMods; Rob Allison and Bill Bonnett, IMCA hobby stocks.

The 18-lap IMCA late model feature started with a frightening crash at the start on the backstretch. Robert See, who started on the front row, was loose coming out of turn two, the car slid sideways in front of much of the field and rolled after collecting four other cars. See was treated by the medical workers at the track, but was not transported. On the complete restart, Todd Cooney moved from the third row into the lead with Jeff Aikey, Rob Toland, and Tony Moro in pursuit. By lap seven, Aikey was running underneath Cooney in turn one and Toland under Aikey in turn four. On lap 10, Aikey passed Cooney low in turns one and two and ran away from the field. Cooney finished second and Moro completed a last-lap pass to take third from Toland.

Adam Larson took the early lead in the IMCA modified main with Todd Inman and Jason Murray in chase. On the fifth lap, Murray hit the wall in turn one bringing out a caution for debris on the track. On the restart, Inman and John Davis were right on Larson’s tail and a lap later Inman made the pass for the lead. On the next lap, Larson drifted high in turn four allowing Davis to move into second. On a lap 11 restart, Davis roared low into to turn one and there was much slicing and dicing between him, Davis, Inman, Dave Farren Jr. and Greg Cox. Farren Jr. was bumped and hit the front wall hard on lap thirteen Shute, who started in last, was the leader and he roared away after the restart with Davis running second, Cox third and Pat Graham fourth.

The caution-filled IMCA stock feature ended after 11 laps of the scheduled 15-lap feature because the time limit had expired. Carl Yaw Jr. led the first three laps and on the fourth lap, the car of Ty Hill rolled. On the restart, Don Killen took the lead. Two laps later the caution flew again. On the third restart of this lap, Steve Jackson vaulted around Killen on the outside for the lead, and the two raced side-by-side much of the next two laps. On lap ten, Jackson drifted high and hit turn the wall in turn three. Drivers were notified that time was up for this race and the race would conclude at the checkered or next yellow. Killen lead the field to the restart, but did not accelerate once the green flew and much of the field passed him with Steve Curtis in the lead. On the following lap, Killen’s car came to rest on track and the yellow and checkered flags were thrown. Curtis won the race with Jeff Johnson in second, Yaw Jr. third and Travis Hansaker in fourth.

Brian Murray led the first two laps of the Cookies BBQ Truck Series main. On lap three, Bret Moyer who started tenth, passed Murray on a restart. Moyer opened a large lead, but the field tightened on restart for lap thirteen. The race ended with Moyer in first, Matt Waugh second, Carl Moyer third, Bill Davis Jr. fourth, Lou Sipolt fifth and Rick Clark sixth. At the conclusion of the race, both Carl Moyer and Sipolt were penalized 2 spots each for jumping the restart. Therefore, the official top four were Bret Moyer, Waugh, Davis Jr, and Clark.

Rick Gladson led the first nine laps of the IMCA SportMod main and that was enough. On the tenth lap, Kyle Wahlert passed Gladson and a caution flag was thrown when the car of Jacob Murray stopped on the track. With the yellow thrown on the last lap, the race became official as of the order on the previous lap. The top four were Gladson, Wahlert, Ryan Giles, and Ryan Lundy.

Matt Inman took the lead at the beginning of the first IMCA hobby stock main. On a lap eight restart, Rob Allison passed him and led the way to finish with Bill Dawson running second, Ray Stock Jr. third and Michael Davis fourth.

The leader of the first lap in second hobby main was Steve Clair with Kevin Fee leading laps two through five. On a restart of lap six, Bill Bonnett shot into the lead and won the race. Fee finished second, Adam Bonnett third, and Bob Johnson was fourth.

Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
