Cooney, Cox, Killen, Hoffman and Bonnett Win at the Iowa State Fair Speedway

By David Wilkinson

DES MOINES, Ia (June 16, 2006) -  Friday night was one of those hot, humid, breezy summer nights when it is a joy to watch racing. And fans were not disappointed at the Iowa State Fair Speedway with several close finishes.

The IMCA late model feature ran from the drop of the green to the checkered with John Bagby leading the first one-third of the race. Using the high side, Todd Cooney passed Bagby and drew away for the win. Darrell DeFrance finished second, Mike Smith third, and Robert See was fourth.

A last-lap pass allowed Greg Cox to beat Jason Murray to the checkered in the IMCA modified feature. Todd Shute led the early laps and was passed by Murray and the two raced side-by-side for several laps. Cox had started deep in the field and worked his work to second by 13th lap of the 15 lap race. Following Cox to the finish were Murray, Shute, and Pat Graham.

As Randy Killen and Don Killen waged a battle for first pace in the IMCA stock feature, announcer Tim Trier wondered if “Randy was willing to provide his Dad with an early Father’s Day present?” The answer was no. After racing closely for many laps, Randy pulled away from his Dad and the others. Randy Killen finished first, Don Killen second, Travis Hansaker third, and Don Wear fourth.

The IMCA hobby stock features belonged to the Bonnett family as Adam Bonnett won the first one and uncle Bill Bonnett won the second. Adam Bonnett was able to hold off the challenge of Adam Hagen who started in the last row and chased Bonnett for the last three laps and finished second. Kevin Fee ran third and Cory Adams was fourth. Bill Bonnett gained the lead from Greg Clark halfway through the second hobby main and received the checkered first followed by Todd Bass, Rob Allison, and Clark.

The Cookies BBQ truck series feature was a dandy race. Mike Hoffman took the lead early in the race and opened a wide lead over the field. Caution periods during the 11th and 13th laps tightened the field with Carl Moyer in second and Matt Waugh third. Moyer and Hoffman ran door-to-door for several laps, including bumping together down the front stretch on one lap. At the finish, Hoffman beat Moyer by two car lengths as Waugh was a nearby third and Brian Murray was fourth.

Jacob Murray and Kyle Wahlert dueled for the last few laps of the IMCA SportMod main with Murray passing Wahlert two laps from the end of the race by going low. Wahlert slide up into the marbles. The finishing order was Murray, Wahlert, Bugs Vincent, and Matt Pinegar.

Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
