Cooney, Farren Jr., Killen and Others Repeat at the

Iowa State Fair Speedway

By David Wilkinson

DES MOINES, IA (JUNE 23, 2006) - A gorgeous Friday evening greeted the drivers and fans at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. It was a night where every feature winner had previously won at the track this year. The winners were Todd Cooney, IMCA late models; Dave Farren Jr., IMCA modifieds; Randy Killen, IMCA stock cars; Jacob Murray, IMCA SportMods, Carl Moyer in the Cookies BBQ truck series, and IMCA hobby stock winners Justin Maschke and Rob Allison.

IMCA late model national point’s leader Tom Darbyshire raced Friday. His daughter was in town showing livestock, so he brought the car along and competed. Kelly Tapper took the lead from his pole starting place and half way through the 18-lap feature, Todd Cooney made his move low in turns one and two and captured the lead. As the race continued, he gradually increased his lead and won easily followed to the finish line by Darrell DeFrance, Darbyshire, and Ryan Griffith.

The early leader in the IMCA mod main was Jason Murray, but on the third lap he hit the turn two wall as a result of a flat tire. Thus Glen Gladson Jr. inherited the front. A few laps later, Dave Farren Jr. passed Gladson. Farren Jr. finished first with Greg Cox second, Todd Shute third, and Pat Graham fourth.

The IMCA SportMod main was quite a race between Jacob Murray and Kyle Wahlert as they raced door-to-door and exchanged the lead four times. Wahlert led the first few laps as a result of a first-lap move as the cars entered turn one three wide with Wahlert in the middle. They raced very closely taking turns to be in first on laps four, five, six, and seven. It was Murray who was on top at the end with Wahlert nearby. Ryan Lundy finished third and Rick Gladson fourth.

The IMCA stock car feature was plagued with cautions and ended early as the time expired. Randy Killen passed Don Wear on the second lap and led all the way to the yellow-checkered. Todd Fisher finished second, Josh Daniels third, and Steve Hill fourth.

The first IMCA hobby stock main saw Justin Maschke leading from the drop of the green to the checkered with Rex Bonnett right behind him. Bonnett bumped Maschke once, but was unable to pass him. The top four finishers were Maschke, Rex Bonnett, Bill Bonnett, and John Yaw Sr.

The other hobby race had two leaders and a surprise at the end. Steve Clair jumped into the lead from the front row. On lap seven Clair was involved in an incident with two other cars and Jeff Tuttle became the leader and finished first followed by Rob Allison, Kevin Fee, Bruce Wolfe, and Adam Hagen. The after race inspection discovered that Tuttle had an illegal offset and he was disqualified making Allison the winner and moving everyone else up one position..

The Cookies BBQ truck series feature opened with three-wide racing into the first turn and Brian Murray emerging as the leader. By the fourth lap, Carl Moyer was able to use the low line and pass Murray. Moyer won with Murray second, Matt Waugh third, and Josh Hull in fourth.

Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
