Killen and Cooney Three-peat while and Moyer Repeat at the

Iowa State Fair Speedway

By David Wilkinson

DES MOINES, IA. (June 30, 2006) -  Friday night racing provided a great start to an extended holiday weekend with great racing and beautiful weather at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Randy Killen won the IMCA stock car main for the third week in a row and Todd Cooney did the same in his IMCA late model. Carl Moyer won his fifth Cookies BBQ truck series feature. Todd Shute won the IMCA modified feature, Rick Gladson the IMCA SportMod and IMCA hobby stock features went to Mike Hay and Kevin Fee.

Kelly Tapper took the lead at the beginning of the IMCA late model race extending his lead as a fierce battle for second ensured. Tony Moro, Todd Cooney and Darrell DeFrance raced together for several laps, including running three-wide at times. Cooney finally broke through and set his aim on Tapper. Going low in turns one and two halfway through the race, Cooney burst into the lead and drew away from the field for the win. DeFrance finished second, Tapper third, and Mike Smith fourth.

Glen Gladson led the first two laps of the IMCA modified feature. On the third lap a caution flag tightened the field. On the restart, Todd Shute using the low side passed Gladson in turn three. Shute pulled away from the field and won easily over Jason Murray, Dave Farren Jr., and Pat Graham.

Twenty-five IMCA stock cars took the track for what turned out to be a caution plagued race that was finished under time limit rules. Bobby Davis III started on the pole and took the early lead with Don Wear close behind. As the race progressed, Randy Killen worked through the field set his sights on Davis. On a lap 11 restart, Davis strayed a little high and Killen snuck by. The two dueled door-to-door over the next two laps with Killen finally opening a small lead and taking the checkered first. Davis finished second, Don Killen third and Wear in fourth.

Carl Knight jumped into first at the start of the first IMCA hobby stock main with Mike Hay nearby. By lap three, Hay moved just ahead of Knight and John Yaw joined the fray. By lap five, Yaw took the lead with Todd Bass now running second. On lap seven, Bass passed Yaw on the backstretch and in turn three, Bass spun and then Yaw received the black-flagged for assisting in the spin. Benefiting from this was Hay who was running third. After the restart, Hay was able to hold off the charge of Bill Bonnett, Rob Allison, and Allen Van Gorp.

In the second hobby feature, Kevin Fee passed Ralph Jones Sr. for the lead and led the run to the checkered. Finishing second was Bill Dawson with Michael Davis third and Bruce Wolfe in fourth.

Pat Fagen opened a nice lead in the Cookies BBQ truck series event with Jim Philipsen running second. Trouble with the truck let Philipsen hit the wall in turn three and take him out of competition. A restart with two laps to go in the race bunched up the field and Carl Moyer was able to pass Fagen in turn three of the last lap. Fagen finished second with Brian Murray third, and Matt Waugh fourth.

Rick Gladson led all ten laps of the IMCA SportMod main with Kyle Wahlert running second, Bugs Vincent third, and Ryan Lundy fourth.

The Central Vintage Racing Association raced at the track and Wade Russell and Dan Osborne battled very competitively exchanging the lead during the race. At the finish it was Russell winning with Osborne in second and Bruce Lund in third.

Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
