Roberts, Hill and Bass Capture First Wins of the Season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway

By David Wilkinson

DES MOINES, IA (July 7, 2006) -  Friday was another beautiful summer evening at the Iowa State Fair Speedway with some very competitive racing and a major lap one crash. Craig Roberts picked up his first IMCA late model victory at the track as did Ty Hill in the IMCA stock cars and Todd Bass in IMCA hobby stocks. Repeat winners were Pat Graham, IMCA modifieds; Justin Maschke in the other hobby main; Ryan Lundy in the IMCA SportMod feature; and Bret Moyer in the Cookies BBQ Truck Series.

Twenty-three of the planned 24 IMCA stock cars hit the track for the feature. On the first lap, a major crash in turn one collected eleven of the cars and only two of those were able to continue. Ty Hill took the early lead with Steve Hill chasing him. Ty Hill maintained his lead throughout the race as a fierce battle raged behind him. The yellow was thrown after the top four cars crossed the finished line on the last lap. The finishing order of the others was determined by their placement on the previous lap. The top four were Ty Hill, Mike Todd, Bobby Davis III, and Randy Killen.

Fans watching the IMCA late model race saw a see-saw battle between Craig Roberts and Jeremy Grady. They ran door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper throughout the race exchanging the lead several times. Mike Smith chased the leaders for the last third of the race and came close to passing Roberts near the end. Roberts finished first, Smith second, Grady third and Randy Faux fourth.

As has often been the case this season, Glen Gladson led the early laps in the IMCA modified main, but he was never alone. Pat Graham and Todd Inman worked through the field quickly and were challenging Gladson. On lap five, Graham edged past Gladson and ultimately pulled away from the field for the triumph. Greg Cox ran second, Gladson third and Inman fourth.

In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, Jeff Tuttle, starting from the pole, was the early leader. By the halfway mark, Todd Bass had moved into first and he persevered for the win with Tuttle running second, Greg Hower third and Ray Stock Jr. fourth in a yellow-checkered finish. After the race, last week winner Mike Hay claimed the engine of Bass.

The second hobby feature was plagued by three accidents on the first lap that called for application of “time-expired rules” prior to one lap being completed. At that time, two laps under yellow were scored. After the successful drop of the green, Justin Maschke sliced his way into the lead ahead of Kevin Hay. Another caution flew on lap nine. This time drivers wee notified of the time-expired rule indicating that the race would finish with either the checkered or the next caution. Maschke was able to hold off Mark Fee for the victory with Fee running second, Bill Bonnett in third and Rex Bonnett in fourth.

Bret Moyer passed Pat Fagen on the second lap of the Cookies BBQ truck series event and picked up his third win of the season. Carl Moyer drove to second, Matt Waugh concluded the race in third, and Fagen was fourth.

Ryan Lundy led all ten circuits of the IMCA SportMod feature for an easy win over second-place finisher Rick Gladson, third-place finisher Ryan Giles, and Gene Behle in fourth.

Three more regular racing nights are scheduled for the year. Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
