ANDERSON, McATEE, AND RINK GET SECOND FEATURE WINS AT SHELBY COUNTY SPEEDWAY
by Bonnie Errett

Harlan, Iowa (April 1, 2006) – Racing the thunderstorm brewing in the west, Shelby County Speedway put on a fast paced night of racing filled with close finishes that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats..

Coming from the pole, Dave Jorgensen was the first leader of the twenty lap I.M.C.A. Late Model feature. One lap after the drop of the green, Craig Roberts shot into the front position with Todd Mason on his tail. Todd Cooney and Don Beckstrom moved forward while battling for third as Mason went two wide with the leader. Roberts held first and Cooney gained control of third. With twelve laps remaining in the race, Cooney powered by Mason and one lap later took over the lead. Following a caution halfway through, Roberts seized first from Cooney with Terry Neal right behind. Cooney left the race as Mike Smith rapidly made his way to the front. At six laps to go, Smith, who started ninth, stole the front spot and held on to pick up his first feature win of the season.

Bill Osbahr took the high route into the lead at the start of the I.M.C.A. Modified feature with Craig Reetz settling into second by the end of the first lap. Reetz set his sights on first and captured the position just three laps into the race. Steadily maneuvering himself forward, Jeff Anderson slid into third and soon after chased down Osbahr for second. Progressively shortening the gap to first, Anderson found himself at the leader’s back end with five laps remaining in the race. Coming off the inside of turn four at four laps to go, Anderson overcame Reetz and led the pack to the checkered flags for his second win in a row at Shelby County Speedway.

The ProAm feature kicked off with Denny Berghahn Jr. and Mike Brown out front. Nick Steier quickly grabbed third as Brown came alongside Berghahn Jr. for first. Two laps into the race, Brown claimed the lead. Matt McAtee swiftly approached the front with Galen and Charles Grabill competing for fourth right behind. McAtee began reeling in Brown as Galen took hold of third and Dwain Pelzer fourth. Running most of the race on the low side, McAtee switched high to find a route around Brown. Held off, McAtee traded back low just before a caution flag was thrown. Finishing the race with a green-white-checkered, McAtee took advantage of his position and snatched up the lead at the drop of the green. Also getting his second win in a row, McAtee drove to victory lane ahead of Brown, Galen, and Pelzer.

Right at the start, Tim Bengard shot into the lead of the I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature ahead of Roger Verdoorn. Just three laps into the race, Bengard had dominantly lengthened his lead as Jermey Gettler traveled forward into second. Brian Blessington jumped up to third one lap later. Down the frontstretch with six laps to go, Blessington took over the second position and pushed hard to catch Bengard. A caution stopped the race at three laps remaining, and Bengard skillfully held off Blessington and Gettler to the finish.

Dale Towne took the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stocks into their feature Saturday night ahead of Tanner Powers and Jason Neilsen. Four laps into the race, Trent Murphy and Donavon Smith found a hole to squeeze up to second and third. Smith made his way to first in just two more laps and continued forward into a strong lead. Murphy snatched up second on the white flag lap and finished behind Smith who collected his first win of the season.

The first leader of the JnJ Fabrication Hornets was Andrew Hicks who started on the outside pole. Joseph Mefferd and Troy Rink took hold of second and third with Allan Schmidt in fourth. Rink quickly moved up a position, and by the end of the second lap, Rink became the new leader. Halfway through the race Daniel Mefferd moved up to fourth. Also winning the Hornet heat, Rink led to the finish line to pick up his second feature win.

Next Saturday gates open at 4:00 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing immediately following.
