FILLING, GROTHER, MYERS, STOLTE, STINGER, AND VAN DER WAL ALL WINNERS ON WALL
OF FAME NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

by: Brad Grupe

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Aug. 18, 2006)—Ten new inductees were added to the Hawkeye Downs “Wall of Fame’ on Friday night while several “Wall of Fame” hopefuls visited “Coca-Cola Victory Lane” on the second to last night of the regular season.

Larry and Kathleen Kemp. Rex and Becky Robbins, Ed Sanger, Jim Heeren, Johnny Rutherford, Arlo Becker, Jim McElreath, Jimmy Kolsto, Lauren Willert, and John Connolly were welcomed to the Wall of Fame on Friday night.

In racing action, Randy Filling of Toddville tightened up the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car point standings a bit more by winning the feature in that division. Point leader Brad Dvorak finished second with Bob Ahrendsen, who sits second in the points, finishing third.

Rodney Grother of Cedar Rapids took home the winning hardware in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks and has just about wrapped up the season championship in that division. Grother made a last lap pass of Deb Mefford, who was trying to win her first feature shortly after she announced she was retiring after this season. Scott Siems finished third, Tim Dains fourth, and
Kandi Floyd was fifth.

Shawn Myers found himself in victory lane once again winning the Sunline Hornets feature. Myers split time this season with Brian Beaty in the 701 Dodge Rampage. Point leader Nathan Ballard finished second, Connie Binder was third, Derrick Beadle was fourth, and John Schroer was fifth.

Dale Stolte of Springville easily outraced a slim field of dirt late models who were “trying the waters” on the Hawkeye Downs half-mile. Joe Zrostlik finish second, and Marty Scheckel was third. Hawkeye Downs officials are gauging interest to see if it would be viable to run the dirt late models occasionally next season.

Multiple cautions slowed the pace in the Miller Time Modified feature with Shawn Stinger eventually collecting the checkered flag for the win. Larry Clausen finished second while point leader Tim Plummer virtually assured himself of a third track championship by finishing third. Rodney Rocarek was fourth and sentimental favorite Arlo Becker finished fifth after entering the Wall of Fame earlier in the evening.

Curt Van Der Wal cruised to an easy win in the Budweiser Sportsmen feature finishing 1.4 seconds ahead of Ross Zumbach. Andy Duggan put a bit of a dent in the point lead of Dave McCalla finishing third while McCalla finished out of the top five. Brian Franks was fourth and Martin Ballard was fifth.

The regular season winds up Friday night, August 25 with Coca-Cola Season Championships.
