SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS HEAT UP CHILLY NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Sept 14) - What a difference a few weeks can make. Hawkeye Downs Coca-Cola Season Championships were originally scheduled for August 24 when temperatures were in the 80’s. On Friday night when the rescheduled event was run, a brisk NW wind made the 48 degree temperature feel even colder. Nevertheless, a hearty group of fans showed up with heavy coats and blankets to cheer their favorite drivers.

On the track features were run for the Sunline Hornets, IMCA Sportmods, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Budweiser Sportsmen, and Miller Time Modifieds. The fields were set by points using an invert number drawn by the current point leader.

The Sunline Hornets point race was one of the closest coming into the final points race of the season with two positions separating Brian Beaty and
Shaun Myers. Beaty did finish ahead of Meyers and unofficially won the title by four points.

As for the Hornet Feature Brad Chandler collected the checkered flag followed by Nathan Chandler, Shane Hanson, Derek Parrott and Beaty.

Tony Olson held a six point margin or Ryan Ludtke heading into the IMCA Sportmod feature and by virtue of the car count he had the title wrapped up
before the green flag even flew. Just to make sure though he took the feature win finishing ahead of Luedtke, Arnie Reif, Jason Doyle and Michael Mitchell. Olson collected titles at three tracks this season winning IMCA Sportmod titles at Hawkeye Downs and Benton County Speedway and winning the B-Mod division at
Independence Motor Speedway.

Tim Dains brought a ten point margin over Gary Pfantz into Season Championship night in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks meaning that
Pfantz would have to finish at least ten places higher to unseat Dains. At the end of the 25 lap feature Pfantz finished fourth but Dains was only four spots
back meaning he kept the title.

Rodney Grother won that feature and was chased across the stripe by Scott Siems, Roland Bohnsack, Pfantz, and Ron Fare.

In the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Bob Ahrendsen had a sizable 13 point lead over Doug Otto and while Ahrendsen didn’t win the feature he did claim the points title, which is his third. Kurt Bohnsack won the 25-lap feature with randy Filling, Greg Hentrich, Ahrendsen and Otto rounding out the
top of the order.

On the half-mile, Dave McCalla had a very safe 12 point margin over Andy Duggan in the Budweiser Sportsmen and by taking the green flag McCalla
claimed his second straight division crown. In the 35-lap feature, Martin Ballard scored his second win of the season crossing the stripe 2.5 seconds ahead of McCalla. Duggan was third with Mel Schappert fourth, and Michael Weber
fifth.

Tim Plummer was virtually assured of his fourth division title in the Miller Time Modifieds however with a nine-point lead over Arlo Becker and a dozen cars in the race, anything was possible as the green flag flew. Becker did post a higher feature finish but Plummer also posted a top five feature finish which earned him the title. Chad Willet claimed victory in the 35-lap feature finishing ahead of Becker, Larry Clausen, Shawn Stinger and Plummer.

This was the last Hawkeye Downs promoted event of the season although B & B Promotions does have it’s “1st Annual Race’em and Wreck ‘em” Championships on September 22. The event features everything from Demo Derby’s to School Bus Races, to Trailer Races , to Hornet Races to Figure 8 Races.
