HAWKEYE DOWNS OPENS SEASON THIS FRIDAY, MAY 2 ALTORFER CAT OPENING NIGHT FEATURES SEVEN DIVISIONS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (April 28) - The curtain goes up on the 83rd season of racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night as Altorfer CAT presents racing in seven divisions at the historic fairgrounds speedway.

Drivers will once again battle for points in the Papa Johns Cup Championship under the lights on the quarter-mile and half-mile paved ovals at Hawkeye Downs. Divisions for 2008 are the Miller Lite Late Models, Coors Light Modifieds, Budweiser Mid-Am Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Sunline 4-Cylinder Hornets, and IMCA Sportmods.

New Director of Racing Operations Chris Stocks has placed a renewed focus on the Miller Lite Late Models which will run a full schedule this season. Twenty late model teams have registered thus far with many expected to run the full schedule. A handful of others may run a limited schedule.

Some familiar names such as Johnny Spaw, Dudley Fleck, Steve Carlson, Curt Van Der Wal, Brad Osborn, Brad Dvorak and Jim Ross will be joining a host of rookies and returning drivers to battle for top honors in the Miller Lite Late Models.

Hawkeye Downs didn’t crown a Late Model champion in 2007 as the division only ran a partial schedule and the 2006 season champion, Scott Wennermark, has not registered for the 2008 season.

Defending Coors Light Modified champion Tim Plummer is returning to defend his title in that division. Veteran Arlo Becker is also back for his 50th year of racing.

The Budweiser Mid-Am Sportsmen will also be returning to the half-mile with several familiar names, possibly including defending champion Dave McCalla.

On the quarter-mile fans can expect to see many returning favorites as well. Bob Ahrendsen is the defending champion in IMCA Stock Cars with Tim Dains defending champion in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tony Olson was on top of the IMCA SportMod points at the end of last season while Brian Beatty took top honors in Hornets.

Practice begins and Grandstand Gates open at 6pm Friday night with Racing at 7pm.

Hawkeye Downs is pleased to announce Grandstand Admission Prices for 2008 have remained the same. Adults (18-61) are just $10.00 with Students
(12-17) and Seniors (62+) only $7.00. Children up to age 11 are just $1.00.
