MCCALLA, PLUMMER, BOHNSACK POST “WALL OF FAME” NIGHT WINS
by: Brad Grupe-Hawkeye Downs Speedway

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (August 22) — Several drivers solidified their hold at the top of the points charts during Power of Nature Implement/Big Kids Helping Little Kids/Wall of Fame Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

In addition to racing, 10 more inductees were named to the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame. World-renowned race commentator Chris Economaki, Dirt Late Model standout Steve Kosiski of Omaha, Neb. and 12-time Modified track champion Mike Schulte of Norway, Iowa headlined a stellar group of inductees.

Others honored on the special night are former Hawkeye Downs Late Model champion Larry Kelley of Cedar Rapids, legendary NASCAR star and IMCA champion Johnny Beauchamp, former track promoter Dale Gegner, fair board member Leo Pfeiffer, Sprint/Midget drivers Lou Holland and Cliff Blundy. Gary "Grumpy"
Gramblin, who worked at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in many capacities fills out the list of "Wall of Famers".

On the racetrack, Dave McCalla picked up his 6th feature win of the season in the 30-lap Budweiser Sportsmen feature. McCalla took the point at the halfway mark and crossed the stripe .839 seconds ahead of second-place Mel Schappert. Andy Duggan, who’s only been able to race pert-time this season, finished third followed by Bob Ahrendsen, and Michael Weber.

Mike Schulte celebrated induction into the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame , claiming the win in the Coors Might Modified feature. Schulte, who’d raced a handful of times this season, held off Larry Clausen after the race leader Tim Plummer and Arlo Becker tangled. Tony Olson finished a strong third while Tim Plummer rallied from the back to finish fourth. Cory Houdek was fifth.

In Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, point leader Kurt Bohnsack raced to his seventh win of the season after making an outside pass of Chad Siems with four laps to go. Siems finished second followed by Brian Franks, Scooter Dulin, and Bob Ahrendsen..Bohnsack, who started in the fourth row, has all but clinched the division title.

Gary Pfantz, “the flying farmer, ” racked up his tenth win of the season in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks. Pfantz, took command after an early battle with Roland Bohnsack and motored to the win. Bohnsack maintained second while another strong competitor this season, Dennis Klinsky, crossed the stripe in third. Scott Siems, who has struggled at times this season finished fourth with Deb Mefford, posting another good run with a fifth place run.

The Sunline Hornets feature went to Derek Parrott which gives him a one point edge over Jim Hanson heading into next Friday night’s season championships. The win was Parrott’s third of the season. Brad Chandler finished second on the track with Jasen freeman posting an impressive run winding up in third. Jeff Selfridge finished fourth while Hanson was fifth.

Finally, Aric Becker scored his second win of the season in IMCA Sportmods finishing ahead of Jamie Huff. Brian Gibson finished third in his third outing of the season. That win coupled with disqualifications for both point leader Ryan Luedtke, and second place in points Arnie Reif has totally scrambled the point chart in that division.

The regular racing season concludes next Friday night August 29 as Barron Motor Supply presents the Season Championships.
