CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (August 29) - Hawkeye Downs Speedway concluded a successful 2008 season Friday night, August 29 with the running of the Barron Motor Supply Season Championships. Despite missing a couple race dates while Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa were suffering from record flooding, 141 different drivers participated in racing in the seven regular divisions running in 2008.

In addition, Hawkeye Downs welcomed Go-Karts as part of the racing program several times during the season.

In racing action Friday night, Steve Carlson added another win to his tally in the forty-lap Miller Lite Late Model feature. Carlson visited victory lane seven times this season and was the Papa Johns Cup Championship winner in that division by virtue of the impressive run this season.

Dave McCalla had all but locked up the Budweiser Sportsmen point title heading into Friday night but mechanical problems surfaced prior to the start of Friday night’s program forcing him to borrow the #22 machine normally driven by Brad Daugherty.

Michael Weber won Friday’ssportsmen feature which was his third of the season while McCalla racked up six wins during the season.

Mike Schulte scored his third win of the season Friday night while his nephew Tim Plummer took the Coors Light Modified point championship by starting the feature as he had a comfortable margin heading into Friday night. Plummer was credited with five wins for the 2008 campaign.

Rodney Grother picked up his second victory of the season in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car division. Grother edged Brian Franks by just .085 seconds in taking the checkered flag.

Kurt Bohnsack had the stock car title in his sights coming into Friday night and finished fourth in the feature which was more than enough to guarantee the points title.

Gary Pfantz has thoroughly dominated the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock division this season with 10 wins but he couldn’t quite catch feature winner Scott Siems during that divisions feature Friday night. The win was the first of the season for Siems who struggled a bit at the mid-point of the season but finished strong, Gary Pfantz either won or came in second in every race this season.

Derek Parrot laid claim to the Sunline Hornets point title by winning the feature Friday night. The win was the third of the season for Parrott, who had a one point edge on Jim Hanson heading into the last race. A post-race DQ for unsportsmanlike conduct shuffled Hanson down in the standings.

Ryan Luedtke claimed the IMCA SportMod title Friday night while Arnie Reif won the final feature event. The win was Reif’s third of the season while Luedtke had five wins in pursuit of the title.
