INNOVATIVE SIGNS OPENING NIGHT CUT SHORT BY WEATHER AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 7) After a one week delay, the 85th season of racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway got underway Friday night-Sort of.

A rain shower halted the program just as the first half-mile feature was set to roll forcing the Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen, Budweiser Modifieds, and Performance Concepts to run their features at a later date.

However, the quarter-mile divisions were able to complete their features in a program that also saw a quick rain shower roll through just as pre-race ceremonies were wrapping up.

The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks ran the first feature of the evening and Nathan Ballard became the first feature winner of the 2010 season after taking the lead from Roland Bohnsack with just three laps remaining. Bohnsack led from the drop of the green flag but the handling appeared to go away as the laps ticked off allowing Ballard to take the point and the win.  Matt Petrzelka, Jacob Floyd, and Scott Siems filled out the top of the running order.

Jim Hanson notched his first Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car win holding off Bob Ahrendsen for the top slot. A trio of cautions kept the action tight throughout the race with Cory Houdek finishing third, Kurt Bohnsack fourth, and Brian Beaty, fifth.

A full field of 24 Sunline Hornet took the green flag for their 25-lap feature and as usual the action didn’t disappoint. For the first half of the race it looked as though Jim Hanson might score his second feature win of the evening but Brad Chandler had other ideas, taking command just past the halfway mark. While Chandler was able to pull away Hanson maintained second and was chased to the stripe by the evening’s sponsor- Innovative Signs owner Derek Parrott. Dan Burhite finished fourth and Bryce Bailey was fifth.

Aric Becker bested a short field of Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods taking the lead on the fourth circuit. He wasn’t challenged the rest of the way with Scott Kositzky, Blake Carson, and Tim Dains filling out the order.

Earlier in the evening, Andy Duggan won a heat race in the Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen while Arlo Becker took the win in the Budweiser Modifieds heat.  The Performance Concepts Late Models ran a pair of heats with Tim Plummer and Griffin McGrath each taking wins.

Details on running the rained out features will be announced later.
