HINRICHS TOPS LATE MODELS, DUGGAN  “DOUBLES-UP” ON SPORTSMEN FEATURES

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 14, 2010) - Better weather greeted racers and fans at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night as the American Legion Hanford Post #5 presented racing in eight divisions.

In honor of Armed Forces Day the American Legion presented a special pre-race ceremony including a color guard, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of “Taps.” Retired and current military members also received free admission.

In Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series action, Kyle Hinrichs of Swisher collected his first Performance Concepts Late Models win of the season. Hinrichs took the lead from Curt Tillman on lap three and was never challenged the rest of the way. A couple cautions did bunch the field but Hinrichs was able to pull away each time. Thor Anderson, Griffin McGrath, Brad Dvorak, and Justin Jennings were next in line across the stripe.

Andy Duggan of Marion won a pair of Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen features. The first was a make-up race from May 7 and saw Duggan finish ahead of Dave McCalla, Travis Thompson, Doug Simon and Ben Glascock.

The second Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen feature saw Dave McCalla knocked out of the race on the first lap after he crashed into the backstretch wall and his familiar #3 suffered significant damage to the right front. Andy Duggan took the lead on lap three after the restart and cruised to his second win of the evening finishing ahead of Doug Simon, Travis Thompson, and Ben Glascock.

Defending Budweiser Modified champion Tim Plummer brought the “mothballed” #66 to the track Friday night and after a brief battle with Ryan Luedtke took the lead for good just past the halfway mark of the feature. Luedtke finished second followed by fellow Norway driver Arlo Becker for a 1-2-3 sweep by the trio of Drivers from Norway. Rodney Rocarek finished fourth and Brian Allen was fifth.

Brian Franks wasted little time in getting to Coca-Cola Victory Lane after temporarily taking over Dave Ballstaedt’s #9 Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car. Franks finished over two seconds ahead of Bob Ahrendsen. Brian Beaty, Greg Hentrich, and Kurt Bohnsack filled out the top of the order.

Duayne Herb took top honors in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Herb led much of the race before briefly surrendering the lead to Jeremy Robbins. Herb regained the lead as the two ran side-by-side for several laps before the checkers waved. Kandi Floyd ran a strong third and was chased to the stripe by last week’s winner Nathan Ballard in fourth. Matt Petrzelka finished fifth.

Aric Becker picked up his second straight win in Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods after taking the lead from Scott Kositzky on lap eight. Kositzky held on to second with Blake Carson and Tim Dains finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Derek Parrott scored his first Sunline Hornets win of 2010, finishing just ahead of last week’s winner Brad Chandler. Parrott powered around Bryce Bailey with six laps remaining and then held off Chandler for the winners’ hardware. Bailey finished third followed by Dallas Chandler and Dan Burhite.

Finally, the McGrath Powersports INEX Legends made their first Friday night appearance in a few years with 15 cars on hand. Nineteen year-old Rachael Pinkerman of Barrington Hills, IL made her first visit to Hawkeye Downs a successful one and she collected the feature win. PInkerman took the lead from  Jeremy Meyer of Cedar Rapids with less than ten laps to go and wasn’t challenged the rest of the way. Meyer maintained second while Rod McGlothen finished third. B.J. Bates was fourth and Al Diercks was fifth.  The Legends are slated for several appearances at Hawkeye Downs this season.
