PLUMMER SCORES TWO WINS ON VAN METER INDUSTRIAL “AIMING FOR A CURE” NIGHT DUGGAN, BALLARD, FRANKS AMONG OTHER WINNERS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 21) - Van Meter industrial presented round three of racing for the 2010 Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series Friday night while raising money for the Aiming for a Cure Foundation. The usual admission prices were waived as fans were admitted for whatever amount they chose to donate to the cause. Hawkeye Downs racers also pitched in and donated to this year’s designated charity which helps provide research and treatment for Pediatric Oncology patients.

In addition to racing for Performance Concepts Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Sunline Hornets, and Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods a special “celebrity” race was on the card. Van Meter Vice President Barry Boyer, Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett, and WMT Air Personality Bob Bruce climbed into Legends cars and battled for 15 laps.

Boyer took the early lead and never looked back as Corbett gave chase and Bruce brought up the rear. The trio finished the race in that order with a special “haircut” awaiting the third-place finisher Bruce. By prior agreement between the racers, the person finishing third (Bob Bruce) had to get his head shaved in Victory Lane.

As for the more serious racing, Tim Plummer of Norway scored victories in two divisions Friday night earning winners hardware for both Performance Concepts Late Models and Budweiser Modifieds.

In the 30-lap Late Model Feature, Plummer, who started in the second row, took the lead from Brad Osborn on lap five and was never challenged the rest of the way despite a caution with five laps to go for Johnny Spaw, who suffered mechanical problems. Plummer pulled away again on the restart leaving Osborn to settle for second. Brad Dvorak finished third, Justin Jennings fourth, and Ken Reiser was fifth.

The Budweiser Modifieds ran two features Friday night with the first being a make-up race from May 7. Larry Clausen posted a green-to-checkers run in that race after starting on the pole of the 10-lap feature. Tim Plummer crossed the stripe in second with Arlo Becker running third.

In the regular Budweiser Modifieds feature, Brian Allen of Hiawatha led just about every lap except the most important one-The Checkered Flag Lap.  Allen started on the point and took early command with Ryan Luedtke giving chase but the field was scrambled a bit after Craig Bender and Rodney Rocarek tangled on lap four. Plummer passed Luedke a lap after the restart, put himself in position to challenge for the lead with two laps to go and made the winning pass with one lap remaining to claim the win. This was his second feature win of the season in this division.

Andy Duggan prevailed in thrilling fashion in the Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen feature as he squeezed out a pass of Doug Simon exiting turn four on the final lap and posted a winning margin of a scant .001 seconds, a near photo finish. Simon led the first half of the race comfortably after starting outside row one but on lap eight Duggan started to put on the pressure. The duo battled side-by-side in the waning laps with Duggan taking a brief lead with two to go. Simon fought back and regained the lead which he held until the finish line.  Travis Thompson crossed the line in third and polesitter Ben Glascock was fourth.

Moving to quarter-mile action, Brian Franks racked up his second Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars win in as many weeks besting Bob Ahrendsen, Jim Hanson, Cory Houdek, and Greg Hentrich. Houdek and Hanson also led laps in the 15-lap feature but Franks took control just past the halfway mark and then scored a 1.592 second win over Ahrendsen as the checkers waved.

The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock final results differ from what happened on the track as two cars from the top five were disqualified for technical infractions. The official finish shows Nathan Ballard earning his second trip to Victory Lane in 2010. Kandi Floyd continued a strong start of the 2010 season finishing second while Scott Siems, Gary Pfantz, and Malena Betzer rounded out the top five.

Scott Kositzky topped the Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods feature, edging out Aric Becker who won the first two features of the season in this  division. Blake Carson and Becker tangled on lap four giving Kositzky the upper hand which he never relinquished as the laps ticked off. Tim Dains finished behind Becker in third with Carson finishing fourth.

The Sunline Hornets feature was another wild affair with four and five wide racing at time  and despite that the 22 car field ran a nearly caution free race. Bryce Bailey and Nathan Chandler battled for the point for much of the race before Derek Parrott moved into the picture and took the lead with three laps remaining. The win was the second of the season for Parrott. Bailey maintained second while Dallas Chandler wound of third. His brother Nathan finished fourth and Jim Hanson crossed the line in fifth.

Racing continues Friday night May 28 with AvoidtheStork.com night. All regular divisions will be action with the Performance Concepts Late Models also running their May 7 make-up feature.
