DEB MEFFORD HOLDS OFF POINT LEADER NATHAN BALLARD FOR IMCA HOBBY STOCK WIN AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
NEAR CAPACITY CROWD JAMS “THE DOWNS” ON 100.7 THE FOX NIGHT

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (July 16) - A near capacity crowd jammed Hawkeye Downs Speedways’ Grandstands Friday night as 100.7 “The Fox” Radio presented their annual free race.

Along with an excellent night of racing there were plenty of other activities including the Lil’ Racer Car Club ‘Great American Ice Cream Giveaway “, The Cedar Rapids Roller Girls, women boxers’ Emily and Katie Klinefelter, beer samples, a frozen T-shirt contest, a vacation giveaway, a “burn-out” contest during intermission, a race car simulator, giveaways and demonstrations by Speed-e-Pan, and more!

On the track, Deb Mefford led all fifteen laps of the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock feature, holding off point leader Nathan Ballard in the process. Ballard was glued to the rear bumper of Mefford’s car for most of the last half of the race but couldn’t find a way around and settled for second.  Another of Hawkeye Downs female drivers in this division, Kandi Floyd, finished third while Shane Koopman and Jeremy Robbins also finished in the top five.

While the win was not the first career win for Mefford it is her first at Hawkeye Downs since the 2007 season and proved to be a popular win with the crowd.

Tim Plummer was back in winning form in Budweiser Modifieds on Friday night earning his third Papa Johns Cup/ I-Wireless Championship Series feature of the 2010 campaign. Ryan Luedtke and last weeks’ winner Larry Clausen paced the field early before Plummer took command on lap five. Plummer added to his lead as the laps ticked off posting a 1.136 second margin of victory over Luedtke. Clausen finished third while Craig Bender and Arlo Becker crossed the line in fourth and fifth.

In Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen, Dave McCalla snagged the lead on the second trip around the Hawkeye Downs half-mile and held the top spot until a spin brought out the caution flag on lap six.

On the restart, Andy Duggan used a great start to bolt into the lead but once McCalla got back up to full speed he was able to take back the top slot  on the next lap. Duggan stayed in second while Ben Glascock and Travis Thompson were third and fourth.

Kurt Bohnsack recorded his second straight Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car win of the season,  holding off point leader Bob Ahrendsen over the last five laps. Ahrendsen made a bold move to take the second spot on lap nine and then went to work on Bohnsack but he came up .190 seconds shorts in his bid to win his first race of the season.

The win was the third of the season for Bohnsack.

The rest of the running order saw Cory Houdek finishing third ahead of Brian Franks and Greg Hentrich.

Tim Dains picked up his win third feature win Friday night, taking the top spot in the IMCA Coca-Cola SportMods. Dains has also won three of the last five features in that division, with Aric Becker and Scott Kositzky also claiming hardware for feature wins this season.

Last weeks’ winner Aric Becker led the first lap but Dain motored by on lap two and held the top spot the rest of the race. Tony Olson finished second in a car normally driven by Blake Carson and Becker finished third.

In Sunline Hornets, Nathan Chandler found victory lane for the first time in 2010 leading a 1-2-3 Chandler sweep as brothers Brad and Dallas finished second and third behind Nathan. After a couple early cautions kept the field tightly bunched  (Nathan) Chandler took the lead on lap five and then survived a couple more restarts including one with five laps remaining before laying claim to the win.

As mentioned, Brad Chandler finished second, and Dallas Chandler was third. Another  familiar family name held down the other two slots in the top five as Brad Burhite finished fourth and Zach Burhite was fifth. 24 cars made up the starting order.

Another “Promoter’s Choice Trophy Dash”  was run in the Sunline Hornets as well on Friday night with  Casey Bilden taking the six-lap dash to the checkers.

The Performance Concepts Late Model feature saw some hard racing interrupted by an uncharacteristic number of cautions with a familiar face holding the winners’ trophy at the end of thirty laps.

Justin Jennings led the first half-dozen laps before Joey Gase took the point and he looked to be  well on the way to his second win of the season but a caution with nine laps remaining bunched the field back up. Point leader Tim Plummer took the lead when racing resumed and he held the point until Gase took back the lead with four laps to go.

The caution flag waved again one lap later and this time Kyle Hinrichs appeared to have the best restart as he shot into second ahead of Plummer with just 3 laps remaining. Gase pulled away from those two with Plummer retaking second place with two to go.

The top five in order were Gase, Plummer, Hinrichs, Lane Brendan and Chad Siems.
