Grabouski tops first Spring Nationals IMCA Modified feature

by: Bill Martin

BEATRICE, Neb. (Mar 15) – Jordan Grabouski led the last five times around the track in winning the rain delayed Spring Nationals opening feature for IMCA Modifieds at Beatrice Speedway.

Grabouski, from Beatrice, caught Ben Seidler for the front spot on lap 21 and held off the Underwood, N.D., challenger the rest of the way to collect $1,000. The victory also put Grabouski on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Defending national champion Jared Siefert of Green Bay, Wis., started outside row one and looked to have the opener postponed from Friday night well in hand, building a lead of as much as six car lengths before his transmission broke on the 16th circuit.

Seidler had run second from the onset, trying unsuccessfully to find a way past Siefert following re-starts on laps five, 10 and 13.

Johnny Saathoff of Beatrice and Ricky Alvarado of Delta, Colo., both advanced from “B” features to finish third and fourth, respectively.
Ronnie Wallace of North Platte was fifth.

More than 80 Modifieds vied in 10 heat races and five “B’ races, with the winner of each heat and the top three in each “B” making the feature, which doubled as the first event in the Larry Shaw Racing Blood, Sweat and Tears Series.

Another hometown driver, Benji Legg, topped the qualifying feature for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, taking the checkers in front of Les Lundquist of Sioux City, Iowa, and Dusty Leonard of Marysville, Kan.

The $500 to win main event for that division is on tap for Saturday’s second show. Modifieds race for a top prize of $1,500, with seven new entries in town, while IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks begin qualifying.

On deck for Sunday at Beatrice is the $2,000 to win Modified feature.
Hobbies race for $500 to win and IMCA Sport Compacts chase a $200 top check.
